Foaming of solutions of the nonionic surfactant, octoxynol 9, was investigated in the concentration range of 0.010 to 5.00%
and in the temperature range of 7–37 C, well below the cloud point of 65 C, by measuring the height and stability of foams
generated by pouring thin streams of surfactant solutions into a glass column. All foams were fast-thinning. Their height
increased monotonically with surfactant concentration. The rate of change of foam height with log surfactant concentration
underwent no change at the CMC of 0.018%, but was four times lower above 0.146% than below 0.146%. Foams at lower temperatures
generally thinned somewhat more slowly and were stronger or more cohesive and more stable than foams generated at higher temperatures
by surfactant solutions of comparable concentrations. Oxidative degradation reduced foam height somewhat. Octoxynol 9 and
sodium lauryl sulfate, rated as a good foamer, produced foams of comparable volume and stability. 相似文献

The effect of electrolytes and other additives on the foaming of solutions of the nonionic surfactant octoxynol 9 (Triton
X-100) was investigated and correlated with their effect on the cloud point. Foams were generated by pouring solutions as
a thin stream into a vertical tube. The height of the generally fast-draining foam columns was measured as a function of time,
and their stability was rated according to the damage sustained within 13 min. The surfactant concentrations used, 0.050,
0.100 and 2.00%, were above the critical micelle concentration. Increasing concentrations increased foam height but not foam
stability.
The electrolytes NaCl and Na2SO4 salted the surfactant out. They reduced its cloud point in proportion to their concentration. They also reduced the foam

Infrastructure federation is becoming an increasingly important issue for modern Distributed Computing Infrastructures (DCIs):
Dynamic elasticity of quasi-static Grid environments, incorporation of special-purpose resources into commoditized Cloud infrastructures,
cross-community collaboration for increasingly diverging areas of modern e-Science, and Cloud Bursting pose major challenges
on the technical level for many resource and middleware providers. Especially with respect to increasing costs of operating
data centers, the intelligent yet automated and secure sharing of resources is a key factor for success. With the D-Grid Scheduler
Interoperability (DGSI) project within the German D-Grid Initiative, we provide a strategic technology for the automatically
negotiated, SLA-secured, dynamically provisioned federation of resources and services for Grid-and Cloud-type infrastructures.
This goal is achieved by complementing current DCI schedulers with the ability to federate infrastructure for the temporary
leasing of resources and rechanneling of workloads. In this work, we describe the overall architecture and SLA-secured negotiation
protocols within DGSI and depict an advanced mechanism for resource delegation through means of dynamically provisioned, virtualized
middleware. Through this methodology, we provide the technological foundation for intelligent capacity planning and workload

Biocompatibility of six different compression stockings and cytotoxic effects were determined using HaCaT keratinocytes, L929 mouse fibroblasts, primary adult and juvenile keratinocytes Cells were quantified using a luminometric ATP assay and the photometric BCA test. Cytotoxic effects were determined by LDH release. An area-based extraction ratio of 1.25 cm2:mL could be shown to be superior to the weight-based extraction of test material. Extraction medium should be an acidic sweat solution as this helps to recreate in vivo conditions. Monolayer cultures of HaCaT keratinocytes or L929 mouse fibroblasts should be used for testing. Primary adult keratinocytes or primary juvenile keratinocytes can also be used. For the latter, testing under DMEM with FCS is recommended to achieve comparable results. It was found that the compression stockings tested exhibited no negative influence on cell viability in vitro and no direct cytotoxic effects measured as release of LDH. In this article, we give a broad overview of the problem of energy inefficiency in data centers (DCs), and we introduced the measures that are being taken and can be taken to improve their energy efficiency. We believe it is very unlikely that we will see an overall decrease in the energy consumed in DCs in the near future, given the strong increase in demand, despite the rigorous energy efficiency measures now being introduced. The actin cytoskeleton in budding yeast consists of cortical patches and cables, both of which polarize toward regions of cell growth. Tropomyosin localizes specifically to actin cables and not cortical patches. Upon shifting cells with conditionally defective tropomyosin to restrictive temperatures, actin cables disappear within 1 min and both the unconventional class V myosin Myo2p and the secretory vesicle-associated Rab GTPase Sec4p depolarize rapidly. Bud growth ceases and the mother cell grows isotropically. When returned to permissive temperatures, tropomyosin-containing cables reform within 1 min in polarized arrays. Cable reassembly permits rapid enrichment of Myo2p at the focus of nascent cables as well as the Myo2p- dependent recruitment of Sec4p and the exocyst protein Sec8p, and the initiation of bud emergence. With the loss of actin cables, cortical patches slowly assume an isotropic distribution within the cell and will repolarize only after restoration of cables. Therefore, actin cables respond to polarity cues independently of the overall distribution of cortical patches and are able to directly target the Myo2p-dependent delivery of secretory vesicles and polarization of growth. 相似文献

Since 1990, the role of satellite observations for climate and land services increased considerably, especially with the introduction in 2011 of the new generation of NOAA operational satellites, called Suomi NPOSS Polar-Orbiting Partnership (S-NPP). S-NPP will continue as the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) for the next two decades. The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the S-NPP spacecraft is accommodating the best technical and scientific features of its predecessors and has several new important features. S-NPP and JPSS, in addition to data collection, will address the impacts of climate and weather on industries, water, energy, population health, and other resources and activities. This article discusses how these operational satellites improve early drought detection, monitoring its features (intensity, duration, area, etc.) and prediction of agricultural losses; how fast the Earth’s natural resources deteriorate; and whether the current warm climate intensifies droughts and increases its area and duration. These climate services have already become available to the global community (http://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/smcd/emb/vci/VH/index.php). The S-NPP/VIIRS data permits its users to enhance long-term environmental data records, thereby improving the ability to estimate global warming, land-cover changes, and better monitoring of environmental resources. 相似文献
