The basic characteristics of the multi-effect boiling (MEB) desalination system are presented. Recent developments are considered, and a thermodynamic analysis and evaluation of the heat transfer areas required for the MEB system are given. In comparing the heat transfer areas, water pretreatment and salt concentration, pumping power requirement and stability of the MEB and multi-stage flash (MSF) systems, MEB seems to have definite advantages over MSF. However, in the absence of well-proven large capacity MEB units, and in view of the good experience with and reliability of MSF systems, large producers of desalted water favor continued installation of MSF systems.  相似文献

The charged mosaic polymer membrane (CMM) without reinforcement and the composite charged mosaic polymer membrane (CCMM) with reinforcement were investigated in terms of salt and water transport (permeability). The composite charged mosaic polymer membrane (CCMM) with reinforcement showed a unique transport behavior such as preferential material transport Lp and ω. Water permeability coefficient, Lp and salt permeability coefficient, ω were estimated by taking account of active layer thickness of composite polymer gel. The Lp and ω values of CCMM with reinforcement were larger than those of CMM without reinforcement. On the other hand, the reflection coefficient of CCMM, σ, showed negative value, which suggested preferential material transport to solvent transport. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The bivariate distributions are useful in simultaneous modeling of two random variables. These distributions provide a way to model models. The bivariate families of distributions are not much widely explored and in this article a new family of bivariate distributions is proposed. The new family will extend the univariate transmuted family of distributions and will be helpful in modeling complex joint phenomenon. Statistical properties of the new family of distributions are explored which include marginal and conditional distributions, conditional moments, product and ratio moments, bivariate reliability and bivariate hazard rate functions. The maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) for parameters of the family is also carried out. The proposed bivariate family of distributions is studied for the Weibull baseline distributions giving rise to bivariate transmuted Weibull (BTW) distribution. The new bivariate transmuted Weibull distribution is explored in detail. Statistical properties of the new BTW distribution are studied which include the marginal and conditional distributions, product, ratio and conditional momenst. The hazard rate function of the BTW distribution is obtained. Parameter estimation of the BTW distribution is also done. Finally, real data application of the BTW distribution is given. It is observed that the proposed BTW distribution is a suitable fit for the data used.  相似文献

A study on the value metal character of Zr in 0.1 M solutions of H2SO4, HNO3, and H3PO4 has been performed using the anode potential as the primary variable in galvanostatic, potentiostatic, and capacity measurements. A method of surface pre-treatment, which suppresses both O2 evolution and metal dissolution, has been described. Kinetic parameters of oxide growth have been calculated. The results indicate that:
  • (i) the high field approximation is applicable following an exponential law, and
  • (ii) the height and activation distance of the energy barrier for ion transport through the oxide phase (Verwey model) are the same three acids.
Measurements have been also made on the dielectric breakdown of oxide, and this occurs at potentials above 200 V. Direct capacity measurements give similar results as those based on reciprocal capacity calculated from galvanostatic experiments. It is concluded that the dominant anodic oxide species is ZrO2 having a dielectric constant of 25. Open circuit potential measurements show that Zr is spontaneously oxidized in the three acids.  相似文献

A very efficient system for subcloning and studying proteinsequences, combining previously established elements for hyperexpression,replication and screening, was used to hyperproduce and characterizeseven different products. It expedited the cloning of genes,in a multipurpose recombinant DNA construct, for all the requirementsto study and engineer proteins with a strain of Escherichiacoli. Genes encoding six heme proteins and a flavoprotein havebeen subcloned and expressed to 13–30% of the total cellprotein, greatly facilitating purification and analyses. Threeof the heme proteins and the flavoprotein incorporated prostheticgroups in E.coli, and exhibited the expected activities. Fourof the enzymes have been purified to homogeneity and two ofthese crystallized for X-ray diffraction analysis. A rapid muta-genesisprotocol, based on polymerase chain reactions, was successfullyapplied to clone derivatives of one of these enzymes, cytochromec peroxidase. Thus, this system fulfills all criteria for engineeringproteins in an efficient and concerted manner.  相似文献

Two related problems are integrated in this paper, the first is the targeting problem and another is production/inventory decisions in a supply chain. The supply chain under consideration consists of a supplier of raw material, a single producer, and multiple newsvendors. The producer can adjust the process mean before starting the production run. Once set to a certain target value, the process mean is not changed until the production lot is completed. At the end of a production run, the producer screens the lot and uses specification limits to evaluate the quality of the item. Nonconforming items are scrapped with no salvage value; however, conforming items are delivered to newsvendors who are subjected to random demand. If demand on a newsvendor in a season is lower than anticipated, surplus items will be returned to the producer at a certain transportation cost. We first develop a mathematical model that maximizes the expected total profit of the supply chain. Then, a table for two special functions is devised to simplify the solution method and is used to find the optimal solution of the proposed model. We also study the significance of this integration by comparing the performance of the proposed model with an independent model where the process mean selection and lot‐sizing decisions are found separately.  相似文献

Island manganese (Mn) films of mass thicknesses 2, 4, 6, 8 nm were deposited on Corning 7059 glass substrates at ambient temperature. The deposition took place in vacuum by the thermal evaporation technique. The dependence of the d.c. resistance of the as-deposited Mn films on time (ageing) was studied in air at a room temperature of 20 C over a period of 110 H. It was found that the increase in resistance lasts for relatively short intervals, in comparison with many other island films, before the resistance attains a stable value. The length of the time intervals decreases with increase of film thickness. The response of the stabilized Mn films to longitudinal and transverse induced strains was investigated and the corresponding gauge factors were deduced. The gauge factor increases with decrease of film thickness. The sensitivities of the present films to the two types of strain are comparable. The data of the research are discussed with the view that the quantum mechanical tunnelling model is the mechanism responsible for the electrical conduction in our films.  相似文献

Rapid developments in information technologies and a large rise in electrical and electronic equipment have generated different forms of electronic environmental contamination. Microwave absorption materials are important to avoid the damage that can be caused by electromagnetic radiation. A necessary condition for the absorption of the most incoming radiation is balanced wave impedance at the air/shield interface, which depends on the studied materials' magnetic and electrical properties. The paper introduces the preparation of BaFe12-xZrxO19 (x = 0.1, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, and 1.2) using a solid-state reaction technique. The studied samples were examined by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometer, and a vector network analyzer. The studied samples showed that controlling the grain size and the prepared samples' magnetic properties play an important role in enhancing the microwave radiation absorption. The examined samples can be a promising absorption material in electromagnetic shielding applications.  相似文献
