This paper compares the impacts of SARS and human deaths arising from Avian Flu on international tourist arrivals to Asia. The effects of SARS and human deaths from Avian Flu are compared directly according to the number of human deaths. The nature of the short run and long run relationship is examined empirically by estimating a static line fixed effect model and a difference transformation dynamic model, respectively. Empirical results from the static fixed effect and difference transformation dynamic models are consistent, and indicate that both the short run and long run SARS effect have a more significant impact on international tourist arrivals than does Avian Flu. In addition, the effects of deaths arising from both SARS and Avian Flu suggest that SARS is more important to international tourist arrivals than is Avian Flu. Thus, while Avian Flu is here to stay, its effect is currently not as significant as that of SARS.  相似文献

The paper analyses the impact of geographic innovation on total factor productivity (TFP) in Taiwan in 2001 using 242 four-digit standard industrial classification (SIC) industries. We compute TFP by estimating Translog production functions with K, L, E and M inputs, and measure the geographic innovative activity using both Krugman's Gini coefficients and the location Herfindahl index. We also consider the geographic innovation variable as an endogenous variable and use two stage least squares (2SLS) to obtain a consistent, albeit inefficient, estimator. The empirical results show a significantly positive effect of geographic innovation, as well as R&D expenditure, on TFP. These results are robust for the Gini coefficients and location Herfindahl index, when industrial characteristics and heteroskedasticity are controlled. Moreover the Hausman test shows that the geographic innovation variable should be treated as endogenous which supports the modern theory of industrial clustering regarding innovation spillovers within clusters.  相似文献

The heat transfer and flow characteristics of a photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen generation reactor are investigated numerically. Four different reactor designs are considered in this study. The solar irradiation is separated into short and long wavelength parts depending on the energy band gap of the photoelectrode used. While short wavelength part is used to generate electron and hole pairs, the long wavelength part is used to heat the system. Because the energy required for splitting water decreases as temperature is increased, heating the reactor by using the long wave energy increases the system efficiency. Thus, how the long wavelength energy is absorbed by the reactor is very important.The results show that more long wavelength energy kept inside the reactor can increase the solar-to-hydrogen efficiency, ηSH. For Fe2O3 photoelectrode, careful reactor design can increase ηSH by 11.0%. For design D under 4000 W/m2 irradiation and a quantum efficiency of 30%, ηSH is found to be 14.1% and the hydrogen volume production rate is 166 L/m2 h for Fe2O3. Effects of several parameters on the PEC hydrogen reactor are also discussed.  相似文献

Synchronized external pulsation is proposed as a method to improve tolerance to acceleration stress. This technique uses a modified anti-G suit which is pressurized and depressurized synchronously with the heart cycle. The feasibility of the procedure has been studied using a computer model of the cardiovascular system which includes the effects of Gz stress, and contains simulations of baroreceptor control of heart rate and venous tone. Model predictions indicate that for unprotected subjects, carotid pressure at eye level (ophthalmic artery pressure) decreases to 20 mmHg (beginning of central light loss) at approximately +3.6 Gz. Applying standard anti-G suit pressure to the model increases this level to 5.3 Gz. When synchronized external pulsation of 2 psi is superimposed on the standard anti-G suit pressure, the tolerance to acceleration stress is further augmented by at least 0.9 G above the protection afforded by the standard anti-G suit alone. A set of preliminary experiments on human subjects to test the feasibility of using the technique in the high-G environment has also been carried out. The results under various protection modes compare favorably to the model predictions. Our results suggest that the computer model presented here is a useful tool for studying cardiovascular responses under +GZ stress. It also indicates that using synchronized external pulsation pressure superimposed on the standard anti-G suit pressure may offer extra protection to acceleration stress.  相似文献

In this study, the effects of filler geometry on the electrical conductivity and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties of poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) composites filled with graphene nanosheets (GNSs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and GNS–CNT hybrid nanofillers have been investigated. The GNSs, CNTs, and hybrid GNS–CNT were well dispersed in the PTT matrix using a simple coagulation process. GNSs were prepared from graphene oxide (GO) through hydrazine reduction, and thermal reduction of GO at two different temperatures of 1050 and 1500 °C. PTT filled with different aspect ratios and oxygen functional groups of GNS were also prepared in order to compare the electrical conductivity and EMI shielding properties. The aspect ratios of GNSs and CNTs were estimated by using an ellipsoid model. Percolation scaling laws were applied to the magnitudes of conductivity to reveal the percolation network and filler dispersion. The percolation exponent of the PTT/GNS composites was larger than that of the PTT/CNT composites. The percolated filler–filler network at which the percolation exponent changed was correlated with the filler geometric structure. GNS–CNT hybrid nanofillers formed a complex double brush structure in the PTT/GNS–CNT composites. The geometric structure, aspect ratio, and intrinsic conductivity of carbon nanofillers affected the electrical percolation threshold and EMI shielding efficiency of the composites.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In recent years, due to increasing awareness of the need for environmental protection, there have been significant efforts to improve consumers’ acceptance of green information technology(IT) products for sustainable development. This study first investigated how knowledge about a green IT product (e-books) influences consumers’ planning processes by using the technology acceptance model and the theory of planned behavior. Data from 320 respondents were analyzed using structural equation modeling to examine the hypothesized relationships in the research model. Results show that perceived usefulness, attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control have a significant and positive impact on the intention to purchase e-books. Results also show the moderating effect of consumers’ knowledge about the environmental friendliness of e-books on their intention to buy e-books. Finally, important implications of the findings are discussed, and directions for future research are also provided in this paper.  相似文献

Vitamin E supplementation could elevate circulating vitamin E metabolites while modulating oxidative and inflammatory status in end-stage renal failure patients undergoing hemodialysis. Plasma concentrations of carboxyethyl-hydroxychromanols (α-and γ-CEHC), ascorbic acid, α-and γ-tocopherols, E2-isoprostanes, and inflammatory biomarkers [tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), ferritin, and C-reactive protein (CRP)] were measured in blood samples obtained from patients (n=11) before and after dialysis on two occasions prior to, and at 1 and 2 mon of daily vitamin E supplementation (400 IU RRR-α-tocopherol). Supplementation nearly doubled plasma α-tocopherol concentrations (from 18±0.5 to 31±1.7 μM, P<0.0001), whereas γ-tocopherol concentrations decreased (from 2.8±0.3 to 1.7±0.2 μM, P=0.001). Serum α-CEHC increased 10-fold from 68±3 to 771±175 nM (P<0.0001), and γ-CEHC increased from 837±164 to 1136±230 nM (P=0.008). Vitamin E supplementation also increased postdialysis hematocrits from 38±1% to 41±1% (P<0.001). Dietary antioxidant intakes (vitamins E and C) were low in most subjects; plasma ascorbic acid levels (88±27 μM) decreased significantly with dialysis (33±11 μM, P=0.01). Plasma Il-6, CRP, TNF-α, and free F2-isoprostane concentrations were elevated throughout the study. There is a complex relationship between chronic inflammation and oxidative stress that is not mitigated by short-term vitamin E supplementation. Importantly, serum vitamin E metabolite concentrations that increased 10-fold within 30 d of supplementation did not increase further, suggesting routes other than urine for removal of metabolites.  相似文献

Control of acid gases using a fluidized bed adsorber   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
During incineration, secondary pollutants such as acid gases, organic compounds, heavy metals and particulates are generated. Among these pollutants, the acid gases, including sulfur oxides (SO(x)) and hydrogen chloride (HCl), can cause corrosion of the incinerator piping and can generate acid rain after being emitted to the atmosphere. To address this problem, the present study used a novel combination of air pollution control devices (APCDs), composed of a fluidized bed adsorber integrated with a fabric filter. The major objective of the work is to demonstrate the performance of a fluidized bed adsorber for removal of acid gases from flue gas of an incinerator. The adsorbents added in the fluidized bed adsorber were mainly granular activated carbon (AC; with or without chemical treatment) and with calcium oxide used as an additive. The advantages of a fluidized bed reactor for high mass transfer and high gas-solid contact can enhance the removal of acid gases when using a dry method.On the other hand, because the fluidized bed can filter particles, fine particles prior to and after passing through the fluidized bed adsorber were investigated. The competing adsorption on activated carbon between different characteristics of pollutants was also given preliminary discussion. The results indicate that the removal efficiencies of the investigated acid gases, SO(2) and HCl, are higher than 94 and 87%, respectively. Thus, a fluidized bed adsorber integrated with a fabric filter has the potential to replace conventional APCDs, even when there are other pollutants at the same time.  相似文献
