The loss performance of tagged and normal ATM cells at a first-in-first-out (FIFO) buffer is studied. The authors show that if a partial buffer sharing mechanism is adopted the loss probability of normal cells can be firmly guaranteed, regardless of the traffic intensity of tagged cells     

Evaluation of the efficacy of sequential intravenous-oral administration of pefloxacin in community-acquired lower respiratory tract infections in patients with underlying conditions

We studied the efficacy of sequential intravenous-oral pefloxacin therapy in community-acquired lower respiratory tract infection in 24 patients with one or more underlying conditions. Twenty-eight patients were enrolled into the study but only 24 patients were evaluated. There were 16 males and 8 females with a mean age of 66.9 +/- 11.2 years (mean +/- SD, range 46 to 87 years). The underlying conditions present were bronchiectasis, chronic obstructive lung disease and diabetes mellitus. Patients who were older than 70 years but without any underlying condition were also enrolled. All received 4 days of intravenous pefloxacin 400 mg twice a day followed by oral pefloxacin 400 mg twice a day for another 10 days. Assessment of success was based on clinical, microbiological and radiological improvement. Pefloxacin produced 79.2% clinical cure rate. Another 8.3% showed improvement. Pefloxacin was well tolerated. There were few adverse effects and none of the patients required a change of antibiotic. Pefloxacin was an effective and well tolerated treatment for respiratory tract infection and had the advantage of broad in-vitro antibacterial activity, twice daily dosing and sequential availability in an intravenous and oral formulation.     

Pseudorandomness of Basic Structures in the Block Cipher KASUMI

The notion of pseudorandomness is the theoretical foundation on which to consider the soundness of a basic structure used in some block ciphers. We examine the pseudorandomness of the block cipher KASUMI, which will be used in the next‐generation cellular phones. First, we prove that the four‐round unbalanced MISTY‐type transformation is pseudorandom in order to illustrate the pseudorandomness of the inside round function FI of KASUMI under an adaptive distinguisher model. Second, we show that the three‐round KASUMI‐like structure is not pseudorandom but the four‐round KASUMI‐like structure is pseudorandom under a non‐adaptive distinguisher model.     

The PBD-Closure of Constant-Composition Codes

We show an interesting pairwise balanced design (PBD)-closure result for the set of lengths of constant-composition codes whose distance and size meet certain conditions. A consequence of this PBD-closure result is that the size of optimal constant-composition codes can be determined for infinite families of parameter sets from just a single example of an optimal code. As an application, the sizes of several infinite families of optimal constant-composition codes are derived. In particular, the problem of determining the size of optimal constant-composition codes having distance four and weight three is solved for all lengths sufficiently large. This problem was previously unresolved for odd lengths, except for lengths seven and eleven.     

Parallel triangulation of a polygon in two calls to the trapezoidal map

We give a parallel method for triangulating a simple polygon by two (parallel) calls to the trapezoidal map computation. The method is simpler and more elegant than previous methods. Along the way we obtain an interesting partition of one-sided monotone polygons. Using the best-known trapezoidal map algorithm, ours run in timeO(logn) usingO(n) CREW PRAM processors.     

Optimization and evaluation of reduced graphene oxide hydrogel composite as a demulsifier for heavy crude oil-in-water emulsion

The rising production of produced water from oilfields had been proven to bring detrimental environmental effects. In this study, an efficient, recyclable, and environmental-friendly reduced graphene oxide immobilized κ-Carrageenan hydrogel composite(κCa GO) was fabricated as an alternative sorbent for crude oil-in-water demulsification. Polyethyleneimine(PEI) was employed to form a stable hydrogel composite. The conditions for the immobilization of graphene oxide(GO) on PEI-modified κ-Carrageenan(κC) beads were optimized appropriately. An immobilization yield of 77% was attained at 2% PEI, 2 h immobilization activation time, and p H6.5. Moreover, the synthesized κCa GO is capable of demulsification with an average demulsification efficiency of 70%. It was found that the demulsification efficiency increases with salinity and κCa GO dosage, and it deteriorates under alkaline condition. These phenomena can be attributed to the interfacial interactions between κCa GO and the emulsion. Furthermore, the κCa GO can be recycled to use for up to six cycles without significant leaching and degradation. As such, the synthesized κCa GO could be further developed as a potential sorbent substitute for the separation of crude oil from produced water.     

FTIR characterization of tropical wood–polymer composites

Wood–polymer composites (WPC) of Geronggang (Cratoxylon arborescens), a light tropical hardwood, impregnated with methyl methacrylate (MMA), methyl methacrylate-co-acrylonitrile (1 : 1; MAN), and styrene-co-acrylonitrile (3 : 2; STAN), were prepared by in situ polymerization using gamma radiation or the catalyst–heat treatment. The FTIR spectra of the three types of WPC, with polymer loadings ranging from 10 to 70%, were compared with that of the wood itself and the respective polymers. Characteristic peaks due to C?O vibration of MMA, C?N stretching of acrylonitrile, and ring stretching and bending of styrene monomers, were prominent in the samples that had higher polymer loadings. For the copolymeric systems, quantitation of the FTIR spectra of these characteristic peaks enabled calculations of incorporated acrylonitrile and styrene monomers in the composites to be made. The FTIR spectra of the residues remaining, after exhaustive extraction to remove homopolymer, showed that graft copolymerization of wood components with acrylonitrile and styrene monomers was possible, but not with MMA. Composites prepared by the two methods, gamma radiation and the catalyst–heat treatment, were shown to be chemically very similar.     

The lesbian,gay, bisexual and transgender community online: discussions of bullying and self-disclosure in YouTube videos

Computer-mediated communication has become a popular platform for identity construction and experimentation as well as social interaction for those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT). The creation of user-generated videos has allowed content creators to share experiences on LGBT topics. With bullying becoming more common amongst LGBT youth, it is important to obtain a greater understanding of this phenomenon. In our study, we report on the analysis of 151 YouTube videos which were identified as having LGBT- and bullying-related content. The analysis reveals how content creators openly disclose personal information about themselves and their experiences in a non-anonymous rhetoric with an unknown public. These disclosures could indicate a desire to seek friendship, support and provide empathy.     

Experimental dynamic characterizations and modelling of disk vibrations for HDDs

Currently, the rotational speed of spindle motors in HDDs (Hard-Disk Drives) are increasing to improve high data throughput and decrease rotational latency for ultra-high data transfer rates. However, the disk platters are excited to vibrate at their natural frequencies due to higher air-flow excitation as well as eccentricities and imbalances in the disk-spindle assembly. These factors contribute directly to TMR (Track Mis-Registration) which limits achievable high recording density essential for future mobile HDDs. In this paper, the natural mode shapes of an annular disk mounted on a spindle motor used in current HDDs are characterized using FEM (Finite Element Methods) analysis and verified with SLDV (Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer) measurements. The identified vibration frequencies and amplitudes of the disk ODS (Operating Deflection Shapes) at corresponding disk mode shapes are modelled as repeatable disturbance components for servo compensation in HDDs. Our experimental results show that the SLDV measurements are accurate in capturing static disk mode shapes without the need for intricate air-flow aero-elastic models, and the proposed disk ODS vibration model correlates well with experimental measurements from a LDV.
