Presents protocols for determining processor membership in asynchronous distributed systems that are subject to processor and communication faults. These protocols depend on the placement of a total order on broadcast messages. The types of systems for which each of these protocols is applicable are characterized by the properties of the communication mechanisms and by the availability of stable storage. In the absence of stable storage or of a mechanism for distinguishing promptly delivered messages, the authors show that no membership protocol can exist. We present an interactive approach for decompositing bitmap drawings and studio photographs into opaque and semi‐transparent vector layers. Semi‐transparent layers are especially challenging to extract, since they require the inversion of the non‐linear compositing equation. We make this problem tractable by exploiting the parametric nature of vector gradients, jointly separating and vectorising semi‐transparent regions. Specifically, we constrain the foreground colours to vary according to linear or radial parametric gradients, restricting the number of unknowns and allowing our system to efficiently solve for an editable semi‐transparent foreground. We propose a progressive workflow, where the user successively selects a semi‐transparent or opaque region in the bitmap, which our algorithm separates as a foreground vector gradient and a background bitmap layer. The user can choose to decompose the background further or vectorise it as an opaque layer. The resulting layered vector representation allows a variety of edits, such as modifying the shape of highlights, adding texture to an object or changing its diffuse colour.  相似文献

Interactive history tools, ranging from basic undo and redo to branching timelines of user actions, facilitate iterative forms of interaction. In this paper, we investigate the design of history mechanisms for information visualization. We present a design space analysis of both architectural and interface issues, identifying design decisions and associated trade-offs. Based on this analysis, we contribute a design study of graphical history tools for Tableau, a database visualization system. These tools record and visualize interaction histories, support data analysis and communication of findings, and contribute novel mechanisms for presenting, managing, and exporting histories. Furthermore, we have analyzed aggregated collections of history sessions to evaluate Tableau usage. We describe additional tools for analyzing users’ history logs and how they have been applied to study usage patterns in Tableau.  相似文献

Consider the problem of scheduling a set ofn tasks on a uniprocessor such that a feasible schedule that satisfies each task's time constraints is generated. Traditionally, researchers have looked at all the tasks as a group and applied heuristic or enumeration search to it. We propose a new approach called thedecomposition scheduling where tasks are decomposed into a sequence of subsets. The subsets are scheduled independently, in the order of the sequence. It is proved that a feasible schedule can be generated as long as one exists for the tasks. In addition, the overall scheduling cost is reduced to the sum of the scheduling costs of the tasks in each subset.Simulation experiments were conducted to analyze the performance of decomposition scheduling approach. The results show that in many cases decomposition scheduling performs better than the traditional branch-and-bound algorithms in terms of scheduling cost, and heuristic algorithms in terms of percentage of finding feasible schedules over randomly-generated task sets.  相似文献

A model for a virtual circuit in the form of a tandem of servers that process incoming packets using a FIFO (first-in, first-out) discipline is proposed. The service times are assumed to be known completely. These may differ from packet to packet and from server to server. The model permits a variety of buffer or transit time constraints to be incorporated into the model. Several results that help one to understand the transient behavior of a virtual circuit are presented. On the basis of these results, a number of schemes that may be used to determine the time when the next packet must be sent over the network are presented. Transit delay and throughput are used to evaluate a given schedule. Solutions are given for maximum throughput, minimum transit delay, and maximum throughput under transit delay constraints. It is expected that these results will have a substantial bearing on the study of congestion control policies in computer networks, particularly those based on predicting network behavior  相似文献

Summary A E n¦ M ¦ 1 queue is defined as a single server queue with exponential service time and general cyclic arrival distributions of cycle length n. The waiting time distribution for such a queue is proved to be a sum of n exponential terms; this is a generalization of G ¦ M ¦ 1 queue results. Based on this a method for obtaining the steady-state waiting time distributions for E n¦ M ¦ 1 queues is introduced. Summary We consider consensus protocols in asynchronous distributed systems that are based on broadcast communication. We show that a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a deterministic consensus protocol is delivery of each broadcast message to at least (n+k+1)/2 processes in ann-process system subject tok crash failures with either eventual fair broadcasting or eventual full broadcasting. The broadcast model captures the idea of a broadcast communication medium, such as the Ethernet, in which messages, if delivered, are delivered immediately and in order but not necessarily to all processes. Louise E. Moser received the Ph.D. degree in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1970. From 1970 to 1987 she was a professor of mathematics and computer science at California State University, Hayward. In 1987 she moved to the University of California, Santa Barbara, where is currently on the faculty of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Her current research interests include parallel and distributed systems, network architectures and communication protocols, and formal methods in software engineering. P.M. Melliar-Smith received the Ph.D. degree in computer science from the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, England, in 1987. He was a senior research scientist and program director at SRI International in Menlo Park (1976–1987), senior research associate at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne (1973–1976), and principal designer for GEC Computers Ltd. in England (1964–1973). He is currently a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research interests include fault-tolerant distributed systems, high-speed communication networks and protocols, and formal specification and verification. Vivek Agrawala received the B.Tech. degree in chemical engineering in 1984 and the M. Tech. degree in computer technology in 1986, both from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, and a Ph.D. in computer science in 1991 from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Since then he has been a Research Scientist at Siemens Corporate Research, Princeton, New Jersey. In his text Visualizing Data, William Cleveland demonstrates how the aspect ratio of a line chart can affect an analyst's perception of trends in the data. Cleveland proposes an optimization technique for computing the aspect ratio such that the average absolute orientation of line segments in the chart is equal to 45 degrees. This technique, called banking to 45deg, is designed to maximize the discriminability of the orientations of the line segments in the chart. In this paper, we revisit this classic result and describe two new extensions. First, we propose alternate optimization criteria designed to further improve the visual perception of line segment orientations. Second, we develop multi-scale banking, a technique that combines spectral analysis with banking to 45deg. Our technique automatically identifies trends at various frequency scales and then generates a banked chart for each of these scales. Treemaps are space-filling visualizations that make efficient use of limited display space to depict large amounts of hierarchical data. Creating perceptually effective treemaps requires carefully managing a number of design parameters including the aspect ratio and luminance of rectangles. Moreover, treemaps encode values using area, which has been found to be less accurate than judgments of other visual encodings, such as length. We conduct a series of controlled experiments aimed at producing a set of design guidelines for creating effective rectangular treemaps. We find no evidence that luminance affects area judgments, but observe that aspect ratio does have an effect. Specifically, we find that the accuracy of area comparisons suffers when the compared rectangles have extreme aspect ratios or when both are squares. Contrary to common assumptions, the optimal distribution of rectangle aspect ratios within a treemap should include non-squares, but should avoid extremes. We then compare treemaps with hierarchical bar chart displays to identify the data densities at which length-encoded bar charts become less effective than area-encoded treemaps. We report the transition points at which treemaps exhibit judgment accuracy on par with bar charts for both leaf and non-leaf tree nodes. We also find that even at relatively low data densities treemaps result in faster comparisons than bar charts. Based on these results, we present a set of guidelines for the effective use of treemaps and suggest alternate approaches for treemap layout.  相似文献
