Advancements in the Development of non-BET Bromodomain Chemical Probes

The bromodomain and extra terminal (BET) family of bromodomain-containing proteins (BCPs) have been the subject of extensive research over the past decade, resulting in a plethora of high-quality chemical probes for their tandem bromodomains. In turn, these chemical probes have helped reveal the profound biological role of the BET bromodomains and their role in disease, ultimately leading to a number of molecules in active clinical development. However, the BET subfamily represents just 8/61 of the known human bromodomains, and attention has now expanded to the biological role of the remaining 53 non-BET bromodomains. Rapid growth of this research area has been accompanied by a greater understanding of the requirements for an effective bromodomain chemical probe and has led to a number of new non-BET bromodomain chemical probes being developed. Advances since December 2015 are discussed, highlighting the strengths/caveats of each molecule, and the value they add toward validating the non-BET bromodomains as tractable therapeutic targets.     

Psychotherapy and the twelve step approach for substance abusers: The limits of integration.

Argues that while there is potential for successful blending of 12-step approaches and psychotherapies for chemical dependency at the level of helping strategies/techniques, some basic differences in values and philosophy will make it impossible to ever fully integrate the 2 approaches without compromising one or the other approach. Some of the differences between the 2 approaches involve leadership (indigenous vs professional), individual control (increasing vs decreasing), and spirituality (enhanced vs decreased). Given that psychotherapy and the 12-step approach must remain largely independent, a model for interactions based on mutual respect, independent control, and cooperation is suggested. Color Grouping in Space and Time: Evidence From Negative Color-Based Carryover Effects in Preview Search.

Five experiments addressed the role of color grouping in preview search (D. G. Watson & G. W. Humphreys, 1997). Experiment 1 used opposite color ratios of distractors in preview and second search displays, creating equal numbers of distractors in each color group in the final display. There was selective slowing for new targets carrying the majority color of the old items. This effect held when there was no bias in the preview and only the second search set had an uneven color ratio (Experiment 2). In Experiment 3, participants had foreknowledge of the target color, and effects were shown over and above those due to color biases. Experiment 4 demonstrated negative color carryover even when previews changed color. Experiment 5 showed reduced color carryover effects when previews were presented more briefly. Global shape cannot be attended without object identification.

Tested whether the global shape of objects can be processed without accessing semantic or identity information. Ss judged which of 2 fragmented forms had the same global shape as a reference stimulus. Matching stimuli could be physically identical, semantically related, or unrelated. The reference stimulus and nonmatching (distractor) form could be semantically related or unrelated. Similarity effects in the related condition were unconfounded with matches nameable and nonnameable forms. For nameable forms, related matching forms facilitated performance; a related distractor disrupted performance. Semantic interference was eliminated when nameable distractors were replaced with nonnameable partners; semantic similarity effects on matching were eliminated with a nonnameable reference stimulus and with inverted targets and distractors. Nursing care of children of battered women

Our understanding of children of battered women and their responses to violence is developing. Children's responses vary. Although some children manifest signs of distress, anxiety, and worry, others are able to overcome the deleterious effects of family violence with the help of inner resources and the support of caring people. Knowledge of these factors offer suggestions for nursing practice with battered women and their children. Nurses who care for battered women and their children must seek them out, listen, offer information, encouragement, and understanding.     

Mobile Social Networks and Social Practice: A Case Study of Dodgeball

A mobile social network system (MSNS) allows groups of friends to be accessed and engaged with from one's mobile phone. Dodgeball is a MSNS that seeks to facilitate social connection and coordination among friends in urban public spaces. Based on a year-long qualitative field study, this article reports on the social and behavioral norms of Dodgeball use. A comparison between social network sites and Dodgeball highlights some of the communicative differences of mobile technology and the Internet. The findings of the study suggest that Dodgeball use can influence the way that informants experience public space and social relations therein. At times Dodgeball can facilitate the creation of third spaces, which are dynamic and itinerant forms of "third places." Additionally, exchanging messages through Dodgeball can lead to social molecularization, whereby active Dodgeball members experience and move through the city in a collective manner.     

Vortex imaging in superconducting films by scanning hall probe microscopy

We have used a low noise Scanning Hall Probe Microscope (SHPM) to study vortex structures in superconducting films. The microscope has high magnetic field (2.9×10^–8T/Hz at 77K) and spatial resolution, 0.85m. Magnetic field profiles of single vortices in High T_c YBa₂Cu₃O_7– thin films have been successfully measured and the microscopic penetration depth of the superconductor has been extracted as a function of temperature. Flux penetration into the superconductor has been imaged in real time (8s/frame).     

Information security management system standards

This article presents ISO’s most successful information security standard ISO/IEC 27001 together with the other standards in the family of information security standards — the socalled ISO/IEC 2700x family of information security management system (ISMS) standards and guidelines. We shall take a brief look at the history and progress of these standards, where they originated from and how became the common language of organizations around the world for engaging in business securely. We shall take a tour through the different types of standard at are included in the ISMS family and how the relate and fit together and we will finally conclude with a short presentation of ISMS third party certification. The material used in this article has been derived directly from the many articles and books by Prof. Humphreys on the ISO/IEC 2700x ISMS family and they are implemented and applied in practice in business, commerce and government sectors.     

Inelastic scattering in planetary atmospheres. 2: Polarization of the rotational component

The inelastic part of Rayleigh scattering, which we previously showed can account for the partially filled line profiles of the blue sky observed at high spectral resolution, also explains the variation of polarization across a line profile. At lower spectral resolution, only the rotational part of the molecular scattering is needed to account for the polarization phenomena; translational (Brillouin) shifts can be neglected. Aerosol scattering, like the ground reflection, reduces the polarizations observed in the zenith sky by diluting the molecular (Rayleigh) component. Although the theory agrees well with existing data, more observations of high quality are needed for a thorough test of the Ring effect.     

Using a fuzzy approach to support financial analysis in the corporate acquisition process

In the global market place, many companies have had to adapt their strategies to meet significant challenges. A strategy adopted by some companies has been international expansion via acquisitions. The need for expert knowledge to determine an appropriate company to acquire has been complicated by the sheer size of the global market place. The costs associated with this in relation to time and personnel have created the need for a computerised expert system to be developed. This paper endeavours to show how a proposed fuzzy based system can assist in the identification of a company for acquisition. The authors discuss the manipulation of the magnitude of fuzzy membership functions to communicate priorities within the system. The fuzzy system is designed to assist financial experts in identifying a suitable company for acquisition in the corporate acquisition process. This includes the deliberate weighting of certain inputs and results above others in the decision-making process. The system attempts to learn and simulate the human precedence given to particular financial statistics in company analysis. The system uses the magnitude of the fuzzy membership functions to reflect the human precedence given to each financial ratio. This enables a particular company's strengths and weakness to be considered while concurrently considering their significance and relevance to the acquiring organisation. The system will enable a larger number of companies to be analysed in a more time and cost-effective manner. The development of this system is intended to illustrate that a fuzzy system can aid the financial experts of an acquiring organisation in the global acquisition process.
