Analysis of Fatty Acid and Lignan Composition of Indian Germplasm of Sesame to Evaluate Their Nutritional Merits

An attempt was made to individually analyze a germplasm collection of 54 indigenous Indian sesame cultivars for fatty acid and lignan composition of their seed oil by gas chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography, respectively. The entries varied in their fatty acid and lignan composition. The mean percentage contents of palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic and α‐linolenic acids ranged between 10–22, 5–10, 38–50, 18–43 and less than 1 whereas sesamol, sesamin and sesamolin scored between 3–37, 27–67, 20–59 of the total percentage of lignan, respectively. The highest percentage of α‐linolenic acid (ALA) was obtained in Var‐9 (1.3 % of the total fatty acids). Among the lignans, high sesamin content is considered to be significant, particularly in terms of long shelf life and nutraceutical value of sesame seed oil. The study has broadened our understanding related to differential biochemical composition of the rich sesame germplasms, thereby providing us with a useful groundwork for identifying potential targets and suitable cultivars for genetic engineering approaches to be undertaken in order to improve the nutritional quality of sesame oil, which in turn would be beneficial towards human health.

The complex [Ni(L1)₂(py)₂]. toluene (L1 is N-phthaloylglycinato and py is pyridine) was prepared from solid state reaction whereas co-crystals having composition 2[Ni(L1)₂(py)₃(H₂O)] · [Ni(L1)₂(py)₂(H₂O)₂] · 2py · 2H₂O was obtained from solution state reaction.

Lanthanide Carboxylate Frameworks: Efficient Heterogeneous Catalytic System for Epoxidation of Olefins

Abstract  

Two lanthanide-based three dimensional metal–organic frameworks (MOF) viz. [Nd(HCOO)₃]_n (1) and [Pr(HCOO)₃]_n (2) have been synthesized and characterized. Both the compounds have similar structure. In this study we have demonstrated that the compounds are highly efficient in catalyzing epoxidation of various cyclic and linear olefinic substrates. MOF compounds are stable and recyclable under the reaction conditions. Notably, MOF systems are remarkably more active and selective than the corresponding lanthanide oxide in epoxidation reaction of olefins.

Self-assembly of neutral dinuclear and trinuclear zinc-benzoate complexes

A structurally important self-assembly of dinuclear and trinuclear zinc-benzoate complexes having formula [Zn₃(μ-OBz)₆(py)₂] · [Zn₂(OBz)₄(py)₂] (A) (where OBz is benzoate and py is pyridine ligand) is reported. The dinuclear and trinuclear complexes present in the crystal lattice of the self-assembly are held together by weak C–Hπ and C–HO interactions.     

Seven Coordinated Metal Complexes derived from (3-Carboxymethoxy-Naphthalen-2-yloxy)-Acetic Acid and Coordination Polymers

A design principle for seven coordinated metal carboxylate complexes and coordination polymers of Mn(II), Cd(II) and Na(I) derived from (3-carboxymethoxy-naphthalen-2-yloxy)-acetic acid (LH2) is presented. The complexes/coordination polymer [Mn(L)(H₂O)₃]·3H₂O (1), [{Cd(L)(H₂O)₂}·H₂O]_n (2); [Cd(L)(py)₃]·3H₂O (3) have metal ions in pentagonal bipyramid environments (py = pyridine). The coordination polymer [{Cd(L)(H₂O)₂}·H₂O]_n (2) may be considered to be the self-assembly of hexacoordinated [Cd(L)(H₂O)₂] units; it reacts with pyridine to form mono-nuclear complex 3. Depending on the reaction conditions, Ni-coordination polymers of L adopt different compositions. From the reaction carried out with NiCl₂ and NaOH in quinoline and water, a hetero bimetallic coordination polymer; namely, [[NaL(H₂O)]₂Ni(H₂O)₄]_n (4) is obtained. A similar reaction in pyridine-water solvent led to [{Ni(L)(py)₃}.py]_n (5). The coordination polymer 5 has pyridine in its interstices held by C–H···π interactions.
