The Spitzbergen reindeer-a winter-dormant ungulate?

Seasonal changes in serum levels of growth hormone, Cortisol and thyroxine in calves and adult Spitzbergen reindeer (Rangifer taranilus platyrynehus) were measured and compared to those previously found in Norwegian reindeer (R.t. tarandus). Cortisol did not differ significantly between summer and winter, or between the subspecies. Growth hormone and thyroxine exhibited highly significant seasonal changes and subspecific differences: winter levels of growth hormone were much higher than summer levels in the Spitzbergen reindeer, while Norwegian reindeer differed very little from season to season. Both Spitzbergen and Norwegian reindeer had markedly reduced thyroxine levels during winter, but the values from the former were much lower than those from the latter. In summer, however, the levels were equal. The high levels of growth hormone and low levels of thyroxine in the Spitzbergen reindeer during winter are indicative of high lipolytic activity and a reduced metabolic rate, respectively.     

Glycated plasma proteins in experimentally induced acute toxic renal failure by dichromate injection: evidence for loss with urine and decreased plasma levels.

In the rat, a single subcutaneous injection of sodium dichromate (20 mg/kg) causes acute renal injury and significant polyuria, proteinuria, and glycosuria (peaking 2–3 days after treatment, and returning to normal by day 5) without any changes in the plasma levels of protein, glucose, and glycated haemoglobin. Surprisingly, the percentage levels of glycated plasma total proteins and albumin (assayed by boronate affinity chromatography) transiently and significantly decrease during recovery from proteinuria (days 4 and 10 after treatment) and were found in the normal range of values by day 18. These changes are concomitant with a significant increase in the percentage level of glycated albumin in urine. Constancy of total plasma protein and the temporal pattern of levels of glycation suggest that changes in the percentage values of glycated proteins are secondary to a transient selective loss of glycated plasma proteins in urine.

A nineteen-year cohort study on the relationship of electrocardiographic findings to all cause mortality among subjects in the national survey on circulatory disorders, NIPPON DATA80

BACKGROUND: Electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of the most popular tools for daily clinics and health checkup, and has been used for the National Survey on Circulatory Disorders to assess the health status in Japanese people. The meaningfulness to predict mortality from all causes among people with ECG abnormality is to be clarified using national samples. METHODS: ECG findings recorded among 9,638 subjects for National Survey on Circulatory Disorders 1980 in Japan, were classified using the Minnesota Codes (mc). Their relationships to all cause mortality over 19 years were examined using Cox proportional hazard models adjusting for sex, age, systolic blood pressure, blood glucose, and smoking habits. RESULTS: Subjects with abnormal Q-QS findings showed significantly high hazard ratios ( 3.71(mc1-1) and 1.57 (mc1-3)) for mortality to the subjects who were free from any major ECG findings. Hazard ratios were 1.37 (mc2-1) to 4.16 (mc2-5) for axis deviation, and 1.34 (mc3-1) to 1.35 (mc3-3) for left high R waves. Those were 1.63 (mc4-3) to 2.59 (mc4-1) for ST depression, and 1.54 (mc5-3) to 2.33 (mc5-1) for T abnormality. The lower the second number of the Minnesota Codes was, the higher hazard ratio was observed in the Q-QS, ST, T codes. The hazard ratios of junction-type ST depression (mc4-4), and low T waves (mc5-4, 5-5) were not significant. CONCLUSIONS: ECG findings defined by the Minnesota Codes were useful to predict the risk for mortality from all causes even after adjusting for the other major risk factors, and the results supported a usefulness of the ECG for health check-ups.     

Species differences in the hepatic and intestinal metabolism of cyclosporine

1. Cyclosporin A (cyclosporine, CSA) is an immunosuppressive drug with a narrow therapeutic index. In the present study the metabolism of CSA was investigated in the liver and small intestinal microsomes obtained from rat, hamster, rabbit, dog, baboon and man by measuring the disappearance of CSA and the formation of the principal metabolites of CSA, namely hydroxylated and N-demethylated CSA. 2. CSA was metabolized at a very slow rate (2-8% metabolism in 30 min) in rat liver microsomes whereas microsomes from dog livers were very efficient (70-100% metabolism in 30 min) in metabolizing CSA. Hydroxylation and N-demethylation accounted for most of the CSA metabolized in all the species tested. 3. Microsomes from the small intestine produced qualitatively a similar metabolic profile as compared with the microsomes from the liver, but at a slower rate in allthe species tested. The relative importance of the different metabolic pathways, however, differed between species. 4. This study pointsto the importance of recognizing the similarities andthe differences in the metabolism of CSA in different species when data from animal studies are extrapolated to man.
