Wideband HEMT MMIC low-noise amplifier with temperaturecompensation

A wideband low-noise pseudomorphic HEMT MMIC variable-gain amplifier has been designed and fabricated. The amplifier has a nominal gain of 13 dB across the band 2-20 GHz, with gain flatness better than ±0.4 dB. The noise figure is less than 3 dB across the band 6-16 GHz. An on-chip temperature-sensing diode is used to provide a linear temperature correction which has been used to reduce the gain variation of the amplifier by a factor of 2 across the temperature range -50°C to +95°C     

The particle pressure of arrays in a potential flow

The role of the polarization of objects, for determining the forces acting on them in a surrounding potential flow, is developed. This is used to derive the particle pressure and compressibility for arrays, as well as expressions for the overall average stresses. The structure of the array, and the way in which it responds to a virtual strain, determines these stresses in contrast to earlier structure-independent models of Geurst (Physica 129A (1985) 233–261, Physica, 135A (1986) 455–486) and Wallis (Multiphase Sci. Technol. 5 (1989) 239–361, Int. J. Multiphase Flow 17 (6) (1991) 815–821). Specific results are given for rectangular arrays of spheres.     

Pentoxifylline therapy in human immunodeficiency virus-seropositive persons with tuberculosis: a randomized, controlled trial

Macrophage activation and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) production are critical in tuberculosis immunity but may result in increased human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) expression and accelerated HIV disease progression in HIV-infected persons. Pentoxifylline inhibits expression of TNF-alpha and HIV. A double-blind, placebo-controlled study of adjunctive therapy with pentoxifylline (1800 mg/day) as a timed-release formulation was done in Ugandan HIV-infected patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. Subjects had early HIV disease (mean CD4 cell count, 380/microL) and did not receive other antiretroviral drugs. Pentoxifylline resulted in decreased plasma HIV RNA and serum beta 2-microglobulin and, in a subset of moderately anemic patients, improved blood hemoglobin levels. Trends were noted toward reduced TNF-alpha production in vitro and improved performance scores, but these did not reach statistical significance. No effect was noted on body mass, CD4 cell count, or survival. Additional studies of more potent TNF-alpha inhibitors in HIV-positive subjects with tuberculosis are warranted.     

Three-dimensional display in nuclear medicine

Several surface and volume rendering techniques are compared using nuclear medicine data including several new methods developed by the authors specifically for scintigraphic data. The techniques examined are summed projection, thresholded projection, threshold-based surface illumination, volumetric compositing, maximum-activity projection, sun-weighted maximum-activity projection, and variable attenuation. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed in relation to the goals of three-dimensional display, which are defined herein. Selected images are shown to illustrate the usefulness of the methods.     

Interactive digital filtering of gated cardiac studies during cine display

The use of a novel class of image processing hardware, the image computer, is illustrated by application to gated cardiac studies. Digital filtering of a nine-view study consisting of 144 frames, each 64x64 pixels in size, is performed using the Wiener filter. During image display the operator can change the filter parameters. Refiltering is then performed essentially instantaneously, permitting truly interactive filter selection. Comparable digital filtering using a fast conventional computer and display hardware is shown to be too slow to permit interactive filter modification. Image computers incorporate very large image memories with very tightly coupled, fast arithmetic processors and video display devices and allow very computation-intensive calculations to be performed interactively.     

The removal of dichloromethane from atmospheric pressure air streams using plasma-assisted catalysis

Plasma-assisted catalysis was used for the destruction of 500 ppm of dichloromethane, CH₂Cl₂ (DCM), in gas streams of air using a non-thermal, atmospheric pressure plasma utilising a dielectric packed bed. The combination of plasma and catalyst gave improved destruction of DCM. Eight catalysts which including alumina, TiO₂ and various zeolites were investigated with the finding that alumina in a one-stage reactor configuration and TiO₂ and HZSM-5 in two-stage configurations gave the best DCM destructions. The sodium zeolites are capable of reducing by 50% the unwanted NO_x by-products, formed by plasma processing in air. The nature of the catalyst is important in terms of the destruction efficiency, end-product selectivity and NO_x reduction.     

Reducing control selection errors associated with underground bolting equipment

Selecting the incorrect control during the operation of underground bolting and drilling equipment causes serious injuries. Shape coding and the layout of dual control banks are two aspects of control design which require further examination. The aims of this research were: (i) to determine whether arbitrary shape coding was effective in reducing selection error rates in a virtual analogy of roof-bolting; and (ii) to determine whether any advantages exist for mirror or place layouts for dual control situations in this situation. Two experiments were conducted to address these questions. No benefits of arbitrary shape coding were evident while control location remained constant. When control location was altered, shape coding did provide a significant reduction in selection error rate. No differences between mirror or place arrangements were detected and this question remains open.
