Foam drainage regimes are significantly associated with the nature of the hydrodynamic resistance in foam structure. A multi‐point electrical resistance measurement technique has been applied for characterization of the drainage regimes and quantifying stability within standing foams. The capacity of the technique was confirmed by the estimation of macroscopic drainage rates for aqueous foams stabilized with sodium dodecyl sulfate. The drainage of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate, a commercial form of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate that is the most frequently used in household detergents was studied in detail by two complementary methods (forced and free drainage). The experimental data could be fitted using a power‐law with an exponent of 1/3 for forced drainage and of 1.0 for free drainage. These data indicate the following drainage behavior: mobile bubble surfaces, causing plug‐like flow within Plateau borders, thus dissipation mainly occurs inside the nodes. This research introduced an accurate method for quantifying foam stability that can be assessed by variations of real‐time measured foam heights that incorporate the evolution of the liquid content. © 2014 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 60: 3143–3150, 2014  相似文献

Impacts of ozonation followed by biological filtration on the formation of disinfection byproducts and the production of biologically stable water were studied on pilot plant and full-scale at two U.S. locations (Oakland, CA and Tampa, FL). Also evaluated is a method to estimate bacterial regrowth potential by comparing it to assimilable organic carbon (AOC) measurements. At both locations, settled plant water is diverted to the pilot plant where it is split into two parallel trains. One train is ozonated, then Filtered through anthracite/sand dual media followed by GAC or through a GAC/sand dual media filter. The other train (control) is identical except that the water is not ozonated. The full scale plants have sedimentation, ozonation, then GAC/sand filtration.  相似文献

The results of experiments on municipal wastewater primary effluent are presented for a pilot-scale submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR). The SMBR pilot plant employed an ultrafiltration membrane with a nominal pore size of 0.035 microm and was operated at a constant membrane flux of 30 L/m(2)h. The mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentration was maintained at 8+/-2 g/L and steady-state fouling rates were determined for 10, 5, 4, 3, and 2-d MCRTs, corresponding to food-to-microorganism (F/M) ratios of 0.34, 0.55, 0.73, 0.84, and 1.41 gCOD/gVSS d, respectively. Membrane fouling rates increased as the F/M was increased. Steady-state membrane fouling rates were correlated with total soluble microbial products (SMP) concentrations. The membrane fouling rates did not correlate well with soluble COD measured on a 0.45 microm membrane filtrate of mixed liquor or with soluble COD rejection (effluent COD/soluble COD).  相似文献

This paper presents the results of 195 days of pilot-scale submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR) experiments on settled municipal wastewater. Short-term and long-term thickening experiments were performed at a constant membrane flux of 30L/(m(2)h) to determine the impact of the following mixed liquor properties: colloidal material, soluble COD, soluble microbial products, extracellular polymeric substances, and viscosity along with aeration intensity on membrane fouling at high mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentrations. The normalized permeability declined with increasing MLSS concentrations in all experiments and increasing the coarse bubble aeration intensity increased the permeability at a given MLSS concentration. Using a dynamic approach, this work demonstrates the importance of mixed liquor viscosity, which impacts the efficacy of the coarse bubble aeration, in sustaining membrane permeability. Over an extended thickening time period, a small increase in MLSS concentration and mixed liquor viscosity becomes more prevalent and leads to greater permeability decline at a given MLSS concentration.  相似文献

Detailed tracer and ozone profile evaluations in a full-scale turbine ozone contactor were conducted to support the development of a hydrodynamic model. The tracer results combined with ozone concentration profiles suggested that the flow through the contactor is very complex and cannot be described as a single CSTR as stipulated by current regulations. A multistage mathematical flow model was developed and calibrated. Cocurrent flow of water and gas in a central part of the reactor was postulated to explain significant ozone concentration gradients. The developed model was suitable for use as a framework for calculations of ozone mass transfer and residual concentrations.  相似文献

Procedural learning deficits are common in Parkinson's disease (PD), but contradictory results have been reported in rotary pursuit learning. This article compared rotary pursuit learning in 2 nondemented PD groups and 2 normal control (NC) groups, using a between-subjects group design in which 3 rotation speeds were presented either randomly or in blocks. The pattern of learning differed between the randomized and the blocked conditions in the NC, but not in the PD groups. Learning was impaired in the PD group in the random condition only. Memory, visuospatial, or executive skills were not associated with the PD group's poorer learning in the randomized context. Results show that procedural learning deficits are not universal with basal ganglia abnormalities but rather depend on the specific cognitive requirements of the learning context. Senescence is the final stage of plant development, affecting individual organs or the whole organism, and it can be induced by several environmental factors, including shading or darkness. Although inevitable, senescence is a complex and tightly regulated process, ensuring optimal remobilization of nutrients and cellular components from senescing organs. Photoreceptors such as phytochromes and cryptochromes are known to participate in the process of senescence, but the involvement of phototropins has not been studied to date. We investigated the role of these blue light photoreceptors in the senescence of individually darkened Arabidopsis thaliana leaves. We compared several physiological and molecular senescence markers in darkened leaves of wild-type plants and phototropin mutants (phot1, phot2, and phot1phot2). In general, all the symptoms of senescence (lower photochemical activity of photosystem II, photosynthetic pigment degradation, down-regulation of photosynthetic genes, and up-regulation of senescence-associated genes) were less pronounced in phot1phot2, as compared to the wild type, and some also in one of the single mutants, indicating delayed senescence. This points to different mechanisms of phototropin operation in the regulation of senescence-associated processes, either with both photoreceptors acting redundantly, or only one of them, phot1, playing a dominant role.  相似文献
