IMC-PID-fractional-order-filter controllers design for integer order systems

One of the reasons of the great success of standard PID controllers is the presence of simple tuning rules, of the automatic tuning feature and of tables that simplify significantly their design. For the fractional order case, some tuning rules have been proposed in the literature. However, they are not general because they are valid only for some model cases. In this paper, a new approach is investigated. The fractional property is not especially imposed by the controller structure but by the closed loop reference model. The resulting controller is fractional but it has a very interesting structure for its implementation. Indeed, the controller can be decomposed into two transfer functions: an integer transfer function which is generally an integer PID controller and a simple fractional filter.

Vertically integrated amorphous silicon color sensor arrays

Large-area color sensor arrays based on vertically integrated thin-film sensors were realized. The complete color information of each color pixel is detected at the same position of the sensor array without using optical filters. Sensor arrays consist of amorphous silicon thin-film color sensors integrated on top of amorphous silicon readout transistors. The spectral sensitivity of the sensors is controlled by the applied bias voltage. The operating principle of the color sensor arrays and the influence of device design on spectral sensitivity are described. Furthermore, the image quality of the sensor arrays is analyzed by measurements of the line spread function and the modulation transfer function.     

5-Fluorouracil, folinic acid, etoposide and cisplatin chemotherapy for locally advanced or metastatic carcinoma of the oesophagus

38 patients with advanced oesophageal carcinoma were treated with intravenous (i.v.) folinic acid (300 mg/m2), 5-fluorouracil (500 mg/m2), etoposide (100 mg/m2), and cisplatin (30 mg/m2) (FLEP), on days 1, 2 and 3, every 22-28 days. 26 patients had locally advanced disease (LAD) and 12 had metastatic disease (M1). Oesophagectomy was planned for patients with LAD in case of tumour regression after chemotherapy, while patients with M1 disease received chemotherapy only. The overall remission rate was 45% (17/38) including four clinical and two pathologically confirmed complete remissions. 16 patients underwent oesophagectomy, 12 after response to FLEP, and 4 after FLEP and subsequent irradiation +/- 5-fluorouracil/mitomycin. Toxicity was mainly haematological, with WHO grade 3 and 4 leukocytopenia in 50% and thrombocytopenia in 31% of the patients. Two treatment-related deaths were observed; one due to chemotherapy and one postoperatively. Median survival time of LAD patients was 13 months, and actuarial 2-year survival was 31%. Patients with complete tumour resection after FLEP had a median survival time of 18 months and a 2-year survival rate of 42%. Median survival of M1 patients was 6 months. FLEP is an active combination for oesophageal cancer, especially when used preoperatively in LAD.     

The effect of ripening and storage conditions on the distribution of tyramine,putrescine and cadaverine in Edam-cheese

The aim of the work was to describe the development of selected biogenic amines (histamine, tyramine, putrescine and cadaverine) in 4 layers of Dutch-type cheese (Edam-cheese) depending on 3 ripening/storage regimes during a 98-day period. Biogenic amines were analysed by means of ion-exchange chromatography. A further goal was to identify microbial sources of biogenic amines in the material analysed. Phenotype characterization and repetitive sequence-based PCR fingerprinting were used to identify the isolated bacteria. The highest content of tyramine, putrescine and cadaverine was determined in cheeses stored in a ripening cellar at a temperature of 10 °C during the whole observation period. Lower biogenic amines content was determined in samples which were moved into a cold storage device (5 °C) after 38 days of storage in a ripening cellar (10 °C). The lowest concentrations of biogenic amines were detected in cheeses which were moved into a cold storage device (5 °C) after 23 days of storage in a ripening cellar (10 °C). During the 98-day period, histamine was not detected in any of the regimes. Within the cheeses analysed, non-starter lactic acid bacteria Lactobacillus curvatus, Lactobacillus casei/paracasei and Lactobacillus plantarum were detected as the main producers of the biogenic amines tested. In starter bacteria Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis and Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris the decarboxylase activity tested was not detected.     

Influence of electron irradiation on the crystallisation,molecular weight and mechanical properties of poly-(<Emphasis Type="Italic">R</Emphasis>)-3-hydroxybutyrate

Biosynthetic poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate] (PHB) undergoes a deleterious ageing process which has been attributed to progressive crystallisation. In this work an attempt has been made to arrest this crystallisation behaviour by an irradiation treatment which is known to induce cross-linking in many polymers. PHB films were irradiated with different doses of electrons and at different times after the initiation of crystallisation. The degree of crystallinity was subsequently determined as a function of time after irradiation using wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements. In addition, melting endotherms were obtained by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and molecular weights by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Corresponding tensile stress–strain experiments were performed in order to obtain information on the mechanical properties of the sample films. The melting point and molecular weights were found to decrease linearly with radiation dose indicating that higher radiation doses cause degradation due to chain scission. However, lower doses applied to samples still in their amorphous state indicate a high degree of cross-linking, in which a network is formed and the ageing process can be prevented to some extent. The tensile modulus and breaking strain were influenced strongly by the point in time at which the material was irradiated during crystallisation.
