Background

Herbal medicine has been widely utilized by pregnant women despite the limited available evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of that practice. The current available studies, from different countries, estimated that the use of herbal medicine during pregnancy range from 7% up to 96%. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence, attitude, source of information, and reasoning behind the use of herbal medicine among pregnant women in Saudia Arabia.

Methods

A cross-sectional study conducted using a convenience sample including pregnant women who visited the obstetric clinics at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A survey was administered in order to evaluate the prevalence and perception toward herbal medicine use among pregnant women in Saudi Arabia.

Results

A total of 297 pregnant women completed the survey. The results showed that 56% of the respondents have used some type of herbal medicine during their pregnancy. Olive oil was utilized in 26% of the respondents followed by cumin 20% and garlic 15%. In addition, 37% of the respondents used herbal medicine by their own initiative, while 33% and 12% used herbal medicine based on recommendations from their families and friends, respectively. Furthermore, 19% of the respondents reported a positive attitude toward herbal medicine use during pregnancy. In addition, the percentage of women with positive attitude was marginally higher among respondents with lower educational level.

Conclusion

The prevalence of using herbal medicine is considerably high among pregnant women in Saudi Arabia. Unfortunately, the majority of the users relied on informal sources to use herbal medicine during pregnancy.  相似文献

PURPOSE: The study's purpose was to understand the molecular basis for different clinical phenotypes of the 5T variant, a tract of 5 thymidines in intron 8 of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene, which disrupts processing of CFTR mRNA and reduces synthesis from the corresponding CFTR alleles. METHOD: We analyzed the polymorphic TG dinucleotide repeat adjacent to the 5T variant in intron 8 and the codon 470 in exon 10. Patients selected for this study were positive for both the 5T variant and the major cystic fibrosis mutation, Delta F508. Almost all Delta F508 mutation alleles occur in a 10TG-9T-470M haplotype. Therefore, it is possible to determine the haplotype of the 5T variant in trans. RESULTS: Of the 74 samples analyzed, 41 (55%) were 11TG-5T-470M, 31 (42%) were 12TG-5T-470V, and 2 (3%) were 13TG-5T-470M. Of the 49 cases for which we had clinical information, 17.6% of females (6/34) and 66.7% of males (10/15) showed symptoms resembling atypical cystic fibrosis. The haplotype with the highest penetrance in females (42% or 5/12) and more than 80% (5/6) in males is 12TG-5T-470V. We also evaluated 12 males affected with congenital bilateral absence of vas deferens and positive for the 5T variant; 10 of 12 had the 12TG-5T-470V haplotype. CONCLUSION: Overall, the 5T variant has a milder clinical consequence than previously estimated in females. The clinical presentations of the 5T variant are associated with the 5T-12TG-470M haplotype.  相似文献

While chromosome 1p36 deletion syndrome is one of the most common terminal subtelomeric microdeletion syndrome, 1p36 microduplications are rare events. Polymicrogyria (PMG) is a brain malformation phenotype frequently present in patients with 1p36 monosomy. The gene whose haploinsufficiency could cause this phenotype remains to be identified. We used high-resolution arrayCGH in patients with various forms of PMG in order to identify chromosomal variants associated to the malformation and characterized the genes included in these regions in vitro and in vivo. We identified the smallest case of 1p36 duplication reported to date in a patient presenting intellectual disability, microcephaly, epilepsy, and perisylvian polymicrogyria. The duplicated segment is intrachromosomal, duplicated in mirror and contains two genes: enolase 1 (ENO1) and RERE, both disrupted by the rearrangement. Gene expression analysis performed using the patient cells revealed a reduced expression, mimicking haploinsufficiency. We performed in situ hybridization to describe the developmental expression profile of the two genes in mouse development. In addition, we used in utero electroporation of shRNAs to show that Eno1 inactivation in the rat causes a brain development defect. These experiments allowed us to define the ENO1 gene as the most likely candidate to contribute to the brain malformation phenotype of the studied patient and consequently a candidate to contribute to the malformations of the cerebral cortex observed in patients with 1p36 monosomy.Subject terms: Gene regulation, Genetics research  相似文献

BACKGROUND: In the general population, obesity is associated with increased risk of adverse outcomes. However, studies of patients with chronic disease suggest that overweight and obese patients may paradoxically have better outcomes than lean patients. We sought to examine the association of body mass index (BMI) and outcomes in stable outpatients with heart failure (HF). METHODS: We analyzed data from 7767 patients with stable HF enrolled in the Digitalis Investigation Group trial. Patients were categorized using baseline BMI (calculated as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters) as underweight (BMI <18.5), healthy weight (BMI, 18.5-24.9, overweight (BMI, 25.0-29.9), and obese (BMI > or =30.0). Risks associated with BMI groups were evaluated using multivariable Cox proportional hazards models over a mean follow-up of 37 months. RESULTS: Crude all-cause mortality rates decreased in a near linear fashion across successively higher BMI groups, from 45.0% in the underweight group to 28.4% in the obese group (P for trend <.001). After multivariable adjustment, overweight and obese patients were at lower risk for death (hazard ratio [HR], 0.88; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.80-0.96, and HR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.72-0.92, respectively), compared with patients at a healthy weight (referent). In contrast, underweight patients with stable HF were at increased risk for death (HR 1.21; 95% CI, 0.95-1.53). CONCLUSIONS: In a cohort of outpatients with established HF, higher BMIs were associated with lower mortality risks; overweight and obese patients had lower risk of death compared with those at a healthy weight. Understanding the mechanisms and impact of the "obesity paradox" in patients with HF is necessary before recommendations are made concerning weight and weight control in this population.  相似文献

We report two cases of delayed migration of the Sapien XT device after a successful mitral valve‐in‐valve (VIV) implantation. The procedure was performed through a transapical approach. Echocardiography was used to choose the size of the Sapien XT device. Although the immediate results were satisfactory both the cases presented with severe regurgitation (1 week and 3 months). Investigations revealed atrial migration of the Sapien device in both the cases, which was confirmed at the time of reoperation. We discuss possible mechanisms, which could have resulted in the delayed migration and highlight the difference between VIV procedures in mitral position versus other positions. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献
