This study examined whether widowhood was associated with physical and mental health, health behaviors, and health outcomes using a cross-sectional (N=72,247) and prospective (N=55,724) design in women aged 50-79 years participating in the Women's Health Initiative observational study (85.4% White). At baseline, married women reported better physical and mental health and generally better health behaviors than widowed women. Whereas women who remained married over the 3-year period showed stability in mental health, recent widows experienced marked impairments and longer term widows showed stability or slight improvements. Both groups of widows reported more unintentional weight loss over the 3-year period. Changes in physical health and health behaviors were inconsistent, with generally small effect sizes. Findings underscore the resilience of older women and their capacity to reestablish connections, but point to the need for services that strengthen social support among women who have difficulty during this transition. Edge matching puzzles have been amongst us for a long time now and traditionally they have been considered, both, a children’s game and an interesting mathematical divertimento. Their main characteristics have already been studied, and their worst-case complexity has been properly classified as a NP-complete problem. It is in recent times, specially after being used as the problem behind a money-prized contest, with a prize of 2US$ million for the first solver, that edge matching puzzles have attracted mainstream attention from wider audiences, including, of course, computer science people working on solving hard problems. We consider these competitions as an interesting opportunity to showcase SAT/CSP solving techniques when confronted to a real world problem to a broad audience, a part of the intrinsic, i.e. monetary, interest of such a contest. This article studies the NP-complete problem known as edge matching puzzle using SAT and CSP approaches for solving it. We will focus on providing, first and foremost, a theoretical framework, including a generalized definition of the problem. We will design and show algorithms for easy and fast problem instances generation, generators with easily tunable hardness. Afterwards we will provide with SAT and CSP models for the problems and we will study problem complexity, both typical case and worst-case complexity. We will also provide some specially crafted heuristics that result in a boost in solving time and study which is the effect of such heuristics.  相似文献

We introduce WSimply, a new framework for modelling and solving Weighted Constraint Satisfaction Problems (WCSP) using Satisfiability Modulo Theories (SMT) technology. In contrast to other well-known approaches designed for extensional representation of goods or no-goods, and with few declarative facilities, our approach aims to follow an intensional and declarative syntax style. In addition, our language has built-in support for some meta-constraints, such as priority and homogeneity, which allows the user to easily specify rich requirements on the desired solutions, such as preferences and fairness. We propose two alternative strategies for solving these WCSP instances using SMT. The first is the reformulation into Weighted SMT (WSMT) and the application of satisfiability test based algorithms from recent contributions in the Weighted Maximum Satisfiability field. The second one is the reformulation into an operation research-like style which involves an optimisation variable or objective function and the application of optimisation SMT solvers. We present experimental results of two well-known problems: the Nurse Rostering Problem (NRP) and a variant of the Balanced Academic Curriculum Problem (BACP), and provide some insights into the impact of the addition of meta-constraints on the quality of the solutions and the solving time.  相似文献

Heat sterilization of plant derived food products entails considerable organoleptic and nutritional quality losses. For instance, texture loss of fruits and vegetables occurs, next to turgor pressure losses, mainly due to chemical changes in the cell-wall pectic polysaccharides. High-pressure sterilization, i.e. the combination of high temperature (?90 °C) with high pressure (?500 MPa), could present a positive alternative assuring safety while minimizing quality losses. In this study, the potential of high-pressure sterilization in preserving fruit and vegetable texture was evaluated by investigating the effect of combined high-pressure/high-temperature (HP/HT) treatments on two texture related chemical pectin conversions in model sytems. First, a protocol was developed to perform reproducible kinetic studies at HP/HT under constant processing conditions. Subsequently, apple pectin solutions at pH 6.5 were subjected to different HP/HT combinations (500, 600 and 700 MPa/90, 110 and 115 °C) and the extent of chemical demethoxylation and β-eliminative depolymerization was determined. At atmospheric pressure, both zero-order reaction rate constants increased with increasing temperature. At all temperatures, demethoxylation showed a higher rate constant than β-elimination. However, a temperature rise resulted in a stronger acceleration of β-elimination than of demethoxylation. When combining high temperature with high pressure, β-elimination was retarded or even stopped, whereas demethoxylation was stimulated. These results are very promising in the context of the texture preservation of high-pressure sterilized fruits and vegetables, as β-elimination is accepted to be one of the main causes of thermal softening and low methoxylated pectin can enhance tissue strength by forming cross-links with calcium ions present.  相似文献

Texture degradation of fruits and vegetables during thermal processing is partly due to pectin depolymerization. In this contribution we investigate the influence of pectin properties (degree and pattern of methoxylation) and processing conditions (pH 2.0, 3.0, 5.0 and 7.0; temperatures of 80 up to 110 °C) on pectin degradation rate constants. Pectins with different degrees and patterns of methoxylation were prepared and heated, the extent of acid hydrolysis, β-elimination and demethoxylation was assayed as a function of treatment time. As the degree of methoxylation and pH decreased, β-elimination rate constants decreased while acid hydrolysis rate constants increased. Demethoxylation rate constants were minimal at pH 3.0 and increased both at lower and higher pH. Reaction rate constants were not considerably influenced by the pattern of methoxylation. All reaction rate constants increased with increasing temperature. As β-elimination rates are reduced by competing demethoxylation, both rate constants were compared. The ratio of these reaction rate constants showed no trend with pH. However, an increase in degree of methoxylation or temperature resulted in a more pronounced increase in β-elimination rate constants than in demethoxylation rate constants.  相似文献

Recent reports indicate that a large proportion of community-acquired Clostridium difficile infections (CA-CDI) are not linked to recent antibiotic therapy, older age, significant comorbidity or previous hospitalization. Possible community sources for CA-CDI include animals and food, and therefore a surveillance study on the prevalence of C. difficile in meat was performed. Samples of different meat species were collected from the retail trade and analyzed for the presence of C. difficile using a method that included selective enrichment in C. difficile broth, subsequent alcohol shock-treatment and plating onto C. difficile selective medium. C. difficile isolates were tested for the presence of toxin genes and were typed using PCR ribotyping. Of 500 samples tested, 8 (1.6%) were positive for the presence of C. difficile: 1 from lamb (6.3%) and 7 from chicken meat (2.7%). The isolated strains belonged to PCR ribotypes different from those that are currently most frequently found in patients with CDI in the Netherlands, except for C. difficile PCR ribotype 001 which was found in one chicken meat sample. This observation suggests that other matrices than meat may serve as a source for CA-CDI.  相似文献

We have cloned, from an oribatid mite, a gene homologous to the zerknült (zen) genes of insects and the Hox 3 genes of vertebrates. Hox genes specify cell fates in specific regions of the body in all metazoans studied and are expressed in antero-posteriorly restricted regions of the embryo. This is true of the vertebrate Hox 3 but not of the zen genes, the insect homologs, and it has been proposed that the zen genes have lost their Hox-like function in the ancestor of the insects. We studied expression of a mite Hox 3/zen homolog and found that it is expressed in a discrete antero-posterior region of the body with an anterior boundary coinciding with that of the chelicerate homolog of the Drosophila Hox gene, proboscipedia, and propose that its loss of Hox function in insects is due to functional redundancy due to this overlap with another Hox gene.  相似文献

Large numbers of Porphyromonas, Prevotella, and Bacteroides strains were screened by 3 monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) and 8 rabbit antisera raised against Porphyromonas gingivalis, in order to detect any possible recognition of non-P. gingivalis surface antigens by these immunoreagents. All three MAbs, which were LPS-specific, extensively recognized LPS from 10 P. gingivalis strains in immunoblotting, whereas they recognized none of the 34 non-P. gingivalis strains. Rabbit antisera were similarly specific for P. gingivalis cells in immunofluorescence and with LPS in grid-blotting, but several of them recognized LPS from one Prevotella melaninogenica and 5 Prevotella intermedia strains in Western blotting. Since several pre-immune sera and an irrelevant serum raised to a Streptococcus species recognized up to 5 of these preparations, we exclude that the reactions were due to antigens shared by P. gingivalis and Prevotella. Rather, we consider that they were false-positive reactions due to natural antibodies, stimulated in a non-specific manner upon immunization with P. gingivalis, in animals whose immune systems were sensitized to Prevotella species before immunization.  相似文献

The design optimization procedure for a new active resonant snubber topology, specifically suited for high power insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) converters, is introduced. After the basic operation principles and certain implementation consideration are discussed, the optimization strategy, based on an analytical loss evaluation, is described. Experimental results obtained on an IGBT phase-arm fitted with an optimally designed snubber are presented.  相似文献
