We studied the trigeminal and facial motor nuclei of the hagfish by the retrograde HRP method. We distinguished 4 components in a single column of the motor nuclei of the trigeminal nerve and the facial nerve, viz., the pars magnocellularis of the trigeminal motor nucleus (mVm), the anterior part of the pars parvocellularis of the trigeminal motor nucleus (mVp1), the posterior part of the pars parvocellularis of the trigeminal motor nucleus (mVp2) and the facial motor nucleus (mVII). Although in Nissl preparations only the mVm could be distinguished from the rest of the nucleus, the boundaries of the other 3 components were clearly demarcated in HRP preparations. Intramuscular injections into two representative antagonistic jaw muscles revealed that there was no apparent topological organization of the neurons pertaining to the opening and closing muscles in the mVm and mVp1, but both antagonistic muscles were innervated bilaterally. Although the hagfish does possess a cartilaginous jaw, the organization pattern of the motor nuclei of the jaw muscles seems to be the most primitive of all living vertebrates. 相似文献

A benign esophageal leiomyoma with abnormally increased fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose uptake on positron emission tomography
(PET) was resected thoracoscopically. The tumor, of which the maximum standardized uptake value of the lesion was 4.7, was
well defined and 38 mm in diameter. Neither mitotic activity nor degeneration was found histologically; and immunoreactivity
for CD34, CD117, MIB-1, and glucose transporter-1 was negative immunohistochemically. A diagnosis of gastrointestinal stromal
tumor was ruled out by an oncogenic kinase gene mutation study. This case cautions against PET-dependent evaluation for malignant

The phalloidin sensitivity of hepatocytes resulting in the formation of cytoplasmic blebs was examined with cells isolated from 73- to 74-week-old and 99- to 100-week-old F344/DuCrj rats of both sexes by a collagenase perfusion method. The cells isolated from aged rats were less sensitive to the toxin than those obtained from 10- to 14-week-old rats. The decrease in the sensitivity was more marked in males than in females, and it appeared at an earlier age in the former than in the latter. Phalloidin consumption experiments showed decreases in the cellular uptake of the toxin in aged rats, and these were more marked in males than in females. The low cellular uptake of the toxin seemed to play an important role in the low sensitivity of the cells in aged rats. Although histological and histochemical examinations showed the development of foci of altered hepatocytes in the aged rat liver, the foci were estimated to account for less than 1.5% of liver tissues. Thus, the decrease in the sensitivity of the cells isolated from whole liver tissues might mainly be attributed to the decrease in the sensitivity of otherwise normal-looking hepatocytes. 相似文献

Changes in the distribution of hyaluronic acid in the developing human retina were investigated histochemically with alcian
blue staining and theStreptomyces hyaluronidase digestion method using 56 human embryos and fetuses ranging from 5 to 41 weeks of gestational age. Hyaluronic
acid was first detected in the inner layer of the retina at 12 weeks. The site of accumulation extended towards the outer
layer by 20 weeks. At the neonatal stage, longitudinal fibers, possibly the processes of Müller cells, were proved to contain
hyaluronic acid. These findings suggest that Müller cells produce hyaluronic acid transiently from 12 weeks’ gestation to
