Intentionality in human gait control: Modifying the frequency-to-amplitude relationship.

Tight frequency-to-amplitude relationships are observed in spontaneous human steady gait. If required, however, they can be modified. The following experiments were aimed at the processes underlying this flexibility, which forms the fundamental basis of the intentional adaptive capabilities of locomotion. In Exp 1, Ss had to intentionally modify the frequency-to-amplitude relationship (leading to preferred or nonpreferred steady states). In Exp 2, they had to temporarily perturbate the stride-frequency-to-amplitude relationship to intentionally shorten or lengthen 1 stride. Within the important constraints exerted by the head–arm–trunk system on leg movement, the results pointed out 2 main strategies that allow the S to intentionally adapt stride organization on-line: adjustment of the tonic properties of the oscillating leg to achieve nonpreferred steady states and phasic action to ensure temporary movement away from a steady state. An efficient 3-dim FFT for plane wave electronic structure calculations on massively parallel machines composed of multiprocessor nodes

Three-dimensional Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs) are the main computational task in plane wave electronic structure calculations. Obtaining a high performance on a large numbers of processors is non-trivial on the latest generation of parallel computers that consist of nodes made up of a shared memory multiprocessors. A non-dogmatic method for obtaining high performance for such 3-dim FFTs in a combined MPI/OpenMP programming paradigm will be presented. Exploiting the peculiarities of plane wave electronic structure calculations, speedups of up to 160 and speeds of up to 130 Gflops were obtained on 256 processors.     

Numerically Invariant Signature Curves

Corrected versions of the numerically invariant expressions for the affine and Euclidean signature of a planar curve introduced by Calabi et al. in (Int. J. Comput. Vision, 26: 107–135, 1998) are presented. The new formulas are valid for fine but otherwise arbitrary partitions of the curve. We also give numerically invariant expressions for the four differential invariants parameterizing the three dimensional version of the Euclidean signature curve, namely the curvature, the torsion and their derivatives with respect to arc length.     

Stability and controllability of planar, conewise linear systems

This paper presents a fairly complete treatment of stability and controllability of piecewise-linear systems defined on a conic partition of . This includes necessary and sufficient conditions for stability and controllability, as well as establishing that controllability implies stabilizability by piecewise-linear state feedback. A key tool in the approach is the study of the Poincaré map.

Highly Sensitive Sensors for the Detection of Nitro Compounds Based on Pyrene Labeled Dendrons

In this paper, we describe the synthesis and characterization of four novel pyrene labeled compounds, some of them dendritic, which can act as potential sensors for the detection of nitro compounds in methanol solution. Methanol was selected as solvent due to its polar properties, which provide similar characteristics to water. The obtained pyrene labeled molecules (PyOH, Pytb, PyNK1OH and PyNK1tb) were studied by UV–Vis and steady state fluorescence spectroscopy. Their application as sensors has been tested with three different nitro compounds: nitrobenzene, 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene and nitromethane. PyOH and Pytb showed a detection concentration limit for the analyzed quenchers in the order of nM, making these compounds suitable for high-sensitive sensoring. PyNK1OH and PyNK1tb displayed high sensibility at µM concentration. All the sensors showed an accurate response towards quencher analytes.     

Detection of pathogenic Escherichia coli strains in groundwater in the Yaoundé region (Cameroon,Central Africa)

This study was aimed at assessing the prevalence of pathogenic Escherichia coli strains, relative to the total count of E. coli, faecal coliforms and other heterotrophic mesophilic aerobic bacteria (HMAB) isolated in groundwater in the equatorial region of Cameroon (Central Africa). Bacteria were isolated using standard methods. Pathogenic E. coli strains were then identified using haemagglutination and antisera tests. The maximum abundance of HMAB, faecal coliforms and E. coli strains were 4.9 × 10⁶, 5.6 × 10³ and 1 × 10³ colony‐forming units (CFU)/100 mL, respectively. The count of pathogenic E. coli strains reached 3 CFU/100 mL. The counts of commensal and pathogenic E. coli strains underwent temporal and spatial fluctuations. In 21% of sampling sites, the abundance of faecal coliforms was significantly correlated to that of E. coli (P < 0.05). However, the isolated bacterial count was not significantly correlated to that of the pathogenic E. coli strains (P > 0.05). The bacteria abundance dynamics may be impacted by many interacting factors.     

The ambiguous status of meat in ancient Rome

Scholars have found that assumed connections between meat eating and performances of masculinity are perpetuated across the American public sphere. However, food expectations and choices are constantly shifting and evolving over time. Recent cultural shifts in the middle and upper-middle class American foodscape that moralize “good” eating as choosing local, organic, and eco-conscious foods, prompts the questioning of their social effects for vegetarian and vegan men, who hold a previously-stigmatized consumption identity. This article analyzes qualitative interviews conducted with twenty vegan and vegetarian men in a semi-urban area of the southeastern United States to better understand how they conceptualize and explain their food consumption identities in relation to their broader identity practices. I find their performances of masculinity often defy the conventional feminization of meatless diets, while also upholding gendered binaries of emotion/rationality and current tropes of white, middle-class masculinity.     

Full quantum treatment of surface roughness effects in Silicon nanowire and double gate FETs

We review recent results on the effect of surface roughness on the transport properties of ultra-short devices like Silicon nanowire and double-gate FETs. We use a full quantum treatment within the non equilibrium Green’s function (NEGF) formalism which allows us to take into account quantum confinement, quantum phase interference, out-of-equilibrium, and quasi-ballistic transport and focus on transfer characteristics and low-field mobility.
