Recent studies have shown that the hand-pointing movements within arm's reach remain invariant whether the trunk is recruited or not or its motion is unexpectedly prevented. This suggests the presence of compensatory arm-trunk coordination minimizing the deflections of the hand from the intended trajectory. It has been postulated that vestibular signals elicited by the trunk motion and transmitted to the arm motor system play a major role in the compensation. One prediction of this hypothesis is that vestibular stimulation should influence arm posture and movement during reaching. It has been demonstrated that galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) can influence the direction of pointing movements when body motion is restrained. In the present study, we analyzed the effects of GVS on trunk-assisted pointing movements. Subjects either moved the hand to a target or maintained a steady-state posture near the target, while moving the trunk forward with the eyes closed. When GVS was applied, the final position of the hand was deviated in the lateral and sagittal direction in both tasks. This was the result of two independent effects: a deviation of the trunk trajectory and a modification of the arm position relative to the trunk. Thus, the vestibular system might be directly involved not only in the control of trunk motion but also in the arm-trunk coordination during trunk-assisted reaching movements. Equine arteritis virus (EAV) is the etiological agent of equine viral arteritis, a contagious viral disease of equids. EAV is the prototype virus of the arteriviruses, a group of small enveloped viruses with positive single-stranded RNA genomes. Because apoptosis or programmed cell death is believed to play an important role in the biogenesis of several cytopathogenic viruses, we examined whether EAV was able to induce cell apoptosis in vitro. To do this, Vero cells were infected with EAV at a multiplicity of infection of 0.1 tissue culture infectious dose (TCID50) per cell, and analyzed at various time intervals for the appearance of apoptotic signs. Fragmentation of chromosomal DNA into nucleosomal oligomers and caspase activation were observed in the infected cells at the time (e.g. 24 h postinfection) where a noticeable cytopathic effect was observed. The kinetics of the DNA fragmentation correlated with that of the production of progeny virus, so that viral multiplication was not interrupted by the apoptotic cell damage. All these data provide evidence that EAV is able to induce apoptotic cell death in vitro.  相似文献

Necrotic enteritis (NE) is a major problem in antibiotic-free (ABF) chicken flocks and specific strains of Clostridium perfringens are known to induce NE. The objective of this study was to develop a chicken intestinal ligated loop model in order to compare the virulence of various C. perfringens strains recovered from consecutive ABF flocks with and without NE. Intestinal loops were surgically prepared in 10 anaesthetized specific-pathogen-free chickens and alternately inoculated with C. perfringens isolates or brain heart infusion (BHI) media. Histological lesion scoring was performed for each loop. All strains from NE-affected flocks induced histological lesions compatible with NE whereas inoculation of loops with a commensal C. perfringens strain or BHI did not. Among inoculated strains, CP0994 (netB-positive and cpb2-positive) and CP-2003-1256 (netB-positive) demonstrated mean histological lesion scores significantly higher (P?netB-negative and cpb2-positive) induced intestinal lesions without significantly higher scores. In loops where villi were colonized by Gram-positive rods, significantly higher (P?C. perfringens is a critical step in the pathogenesis of NE. Finally, we demonstrated the importance of controlling virulent C. perfringens strains in ABF chicken flocks as a highly virulent strain can be present in consecutive flocks with NE and possibly affect multiple flocks.  相似文献

Our objective was to define optimal management of distal ureteric strictures following renal transplantation. A systematic review on PubMed identified 34 articles (385 patients). Primary endpoints were success rates and complications of specific primary and secondary treatments (following failure of primary treatment). Among primary treatments (n = 303), the open approach had 85.4% success (95% CI 72.5–93.1) and the endourological approach had 64.3% success (95% CI 58.3–69.9). Among secondary treatments (n = 82), the open approach had 93.1% success (95% CI 77.0–99.2) and the endourological approach had 75.5% success (95% CI 62.3–85.2). The most common primary open treatment was ureteric reimplantation (n = 33, 81.8% success, 95% CI 65.2–91.8). The most common primary endourological treatment was dilation (n = 133, 58.6% success, 95% CI 50.1–66.7). Fourteen complications, including death (4 weeks post‐op) and graft loss (12 days post‐op), followed endourological treatment. One complication followed open treatment. This is the first systematic review to examine the success rates and complications of specific treatments for distal ureteric strictures following renal transplantation. Our review indicates that open management has higher success rates and fewer complications than endourological management as a primary and secondary treatment for post‐transplant distal ureteric strictures. We also outline a post‐transplant ureteric stricture evaluation and treatment algorithm.  相似文献

Four-dimensional (4D) computed tomography (CT) imaging has found increasing importance in the localization of tumor and surrounding normal structures throughout the respiratory cycle. Based on such tumor motion information, it is possible to identify the appropriate phase interval for respiratory gated treatment planning and delivery. Such a gating phase interval is determined retrospectively based on tumor motion from internal tumor displacement. However, respiratory-gated treatment is delivered prospectively based on motion determined predominantly from an external monitor. Therefore, the simulation gate threshold determined from the retrospective phase interval selected for gating at 4D CT simulation may not correspond to the delivery gate threshold that is determined from the prospective external monitor displacement at treatment delivery. The purpose of the present work is to establish a relationship between the thresholds for respiratory gating determined at CT simulation and treatment delivery, respectively. One hundred fifty external respiratory motion traces, from 90 patients, with and without audio-visual biofeedback, are analyzed. Two respiratory phase intervals, 40%-60% and 30%-70%, are chosen for respiratory gating from the 4D CT-derived tumor motion trajectory. From residual tumor displacements within each such gating phase interval, a simulation gate threshold is defined based on (a) the average and (b) the maximum respiratory displacement within the phase interval. The duty cycle for prospective gated delivery is estimated from the proportion of external monitor displacement data points within both the selected phase interval and the simulation gate threshold. The delivery gate threshold is then determined iteratively to match the above determined duty cycle. The magnitude of the difference between such gate thresholds determined at simulation and treatment delivery is quantified in each case. Phantom motion tests yielded coincidence of simulation and delivery gate thresholds to within 0.3%. For patient data analysis, differences between simulation and delivery gate thresholds are reported as a fraction of the total respiratory motion range. For the smaller phase interval, the differences between simulation and delivery gate thresholds are 8 +/- 11% and 14 +/- 21% with and without audio-visual biofeedback, respectively, when the simulation gate threshold is determined based on the mean respiratory displacement within the 40%-60% gating phase interval. For the longer phase interval, corresponding differences are 4 +/- 7% and 8 +/- 15% with and without audiovisual biofeedback, respectively. Alternatively, when the simulation gate threshold is determined based on the maximum average respiratory displacement within the gating phase interval, greater differences between simulation and delivery gate thresholds are observed. A relationship between retrospective simulation gate threshold and prospective delivery gate threshold for respiratory gating is established and validated for regular and nonregular respiratory motion. Using this relationship, the delivery gate threshold can be reliably estimated at the time of 4D CT simulation, thereby improving the accuracy and efficiency of respiratory-gated radiation delivery.  相似文献
