A ureterocutaneous fistula forty years after nephrectomy

The case of a woman presenting with a ureterocutaneous fistula 40 years after nephrectomy is described. Because of advanced respiratory disease and absence of infective activity, a conservative line of treatment with saline rinse was given. At 3 months follow-up the fistula had become chronic, with a small opening without signs of infection and ultrasound revealed no abscess.

Ultrasonographic findings of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the mandible: report of a case

Today, ultrasound imaging is being widely used to assess soft tissue lesions in the maxillofacial region. However, ultrasound investigations of intra-osseous lesions are rare, especially for tumors of the jaws. This report emphasized the capability of this useful imaging modality in identification of the characteristics of malignant conditions involving the bone. Mesenchymal chondrosarcoama, one of the unusual malignant conditions of the jaw, was presented in a young male with significant facial swelling. Different imaging modalities parallel with the histopathologic investigation confirmed the diagnosis. Interestingly, destruction of the bony cortex and new bone formation with a characteristic "sun ray appearance", highly suggestive of sarcomas, was manifested on the ultrasonograph. Thus, this report presented the ultrasonographic features of chondrosarcoma of mandible and considered the ultrasonography to be a useful imaging modality to evaluate intra-osseous jaw lesions.     

Biased Homozygous Haplotypes Across the Human Caveolin 1 Upstream Purine Complex in Parkinson’s Disease

The alpha-synuclein–caveolin 1 axis is suggested to be of role in the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease in cell line models. The objective of this study was to analyze the homozygous haplotype compartment of the human caveolin 1 gene upstream purine complex in patients afflicted with Parkinson’s disease. This complex was screened in patients with Parkinson’s disease (n?=?141) and compared with a group of controls (n?=?760) using polymerase chain reaction and sequencing. The expression activity of the homozygous haplotypes was then examined using luciferase Dual-Glo system in human neuronal cell line, LAN-5. Six haplotypes were found to be homozygous in the patients, and not in the control pool (Fisher exact p?<?1?×?10^?6). Three of those haplotypes were specific to Parkinson’s disease (Fisher exact p?<?0.002), and the remaining three overlapped with homozygous haplotypes in Alzheimer’s disease and multiple sclerosis (Fisher exact p?<?0.002). The disease haplotypes contained motif lengths that were nonexistent in the control homozygous haplotype pool and significantly increased gene expression (p?<?9?×?10^—6). We conclude that skew in the caveolin 1 purine complex homozygous haplotype compartment and an additive effect of those haplotypes may be linked with Parkinson’s disease.     

Effects of GABAergic inhibition on neocortical long-term potentiation in the chronically prepared rat

In this study we investigated the hypothesis whether P2-related differences tested in a visual priming paradigm are associated with theta phase-locking. We recorded the EEG from 31 electrodes and calculated phase-locking index and total power differences for frequencies between 2 and 20 Hz. ERPs (event-related potentials) were analyzed for P1, N1 and P2 components. P2 showed strongest task-related amplitude differences between congruent and incongruent targets. A source analyses was performed for the P2 component using sLoreta that revealed local generators of the P2 in parieto-occipital regions. Phase-locking analyses showed specific effects in the theta range (4-6 Hz) appearing in time windows at around the P2 component. We draw the conclusion that phase-locked theta reflect top-down regulation processes mediating information between memory systems and is in part involved in the modulation of the P2 component.
