Background Oxidative stress and increased inflammation have been reported to be increased in subjects with diabetes and to be involved in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular complications after myocardial infarction (MI). It is well recognized that red wine has antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory activities. We examined the effects of moderate red wine intake on echocardiographic parameters of functional cardiac outcome in addition to inflammatory cytokines and nitrotyrosine (oxidative stress marker), in subjects with diabetes after a first uncomplicated MI. Methods One hundred and fifteen subjects with diabetes who had sustained a first non‐fatal MI were randomized to receive a moderate daily amount of red wine (intervention group) or not (control group). Echocardiographic parameters of ventricular dys‐synchrony, circulating levels of nitrotyrosine, tumour necrosis factor‐α (TNF‐α), interleukin‐6 (IL‐6), interleukin‐18 (IL‐18) and C‐reactive protein (CRP) were investigated at baseline and 12 months after randomization. Results After 1 year of diet intervention, concentrations of nitrotyrosine (P < 0.01), CRP (P < 0.01), TNF‐α (P < 0.01), IL‐6 (P < 0.01) and IL‐18 (P < 0.01) were increased in the control group compared with the intervention group. In addition, myocardial performance index (P < 0.02) was higher, and transmitral Doppler flow (P < 0.05), pulmonary venous flow analysis (P < 0.02) and ejection fraction (P < 0.05) were lower in the control group, indicating ventricular dys‐synchrony. The concentrations of nitrotyrosine, CRP, TNF‐α and IL‐6 were related to echocardiographic parameters of ventricular dys‐synchrony. Conclusions In subjects with diabetes, red wine consumption, taken with meals, significantly reduces oxidative stress and pro‐inflammatory cytokines as well as improving cardiac function after MI. Moderate red wine intake with meals may have a beneficial effect in the prevention of cardiovascular complications after MI in subjects with diabetes. 相似文献

The characteristics of trabecular bone in human fetuses at seven to nine months of intra-uterine life were studied in the vestibular surface of the mental and body portions of the mandible. In the mental portion, many circular trabeculae joined by "bridges" were observed in the alveolar region (AR). In the 8-month old fetus are trabeculae with tortuous disposition in the medium region (MR). Oblique trabeculae with superior and inferior dispositions defining a triangular area (future mental fossae) are verified in 9-month old fetuses. Trabeculae circularly disposed and vascular foramina are present close to the apex of this area. In the basilar region (BR) some trabeculae obliquely oriented are observed disposed near to the mandibular symphysis. The longitudinal bundles of collagen fibers assume an antero-posterior direction. At 9-month age the vascular foramina range from 6 to 20 microns and the osteocyte lacunae ranging from 1 to 4 microns diameter, are present in mandibles from all ages examined. In the body portion the presence of circular trabeculae joined by "bridges" is the main characteristic of the AR. In the MR most of the trabeculae are circular and the longitudinal trabeculae of this region assume an antero-posterior direction. The laminar, antero-posterior and juxtaposed trabeculae lying parallel to mandible base are a characteristic of the BR. The bundles of collagen fibers exhibit the same pattern of the trabeculae. The vascular foramina of the BR are smaller than that of the precedent regions. In the body portion of the mandible from all ages examined the osteocyte lacunae range from 1 to 4 microns in diameter. 相似文献

The requirement for histocompatibility in the T lymphocyte killing of virus-infected cells has led us to investigate the effect of influenza virus infection on mouse cell surface histocompatibility (H-2) antigens. Monoclonal anti-H-2 antibody made it possible to develop equilibrium binding conditions for the assay of H-2 antigen-antibody interactions on intact cells. Scatchard analysis of anti-H-2 binding with normal and virus-infected cells yielded linear curves indicating homogeneity of the interaction at varied concentrations of antibody through saturating levels. The estimated number of 2 × 105 - 5 × 105 H-2 antigenic sites per mouse lymphoblast does not appear to change during the course of influenza virus infection. However, the Ka (binding affinity constant) of anti-H-2 binding is rapidly elevated by virus infection (“0” time), continues to increase for 3 h post infection, then decreases. Control cells, treated with normal egg allantoic fluid, show no change in Ka during similar incubation. This change in Ka requires the presence of active viral neuraminidase. Thermal denaturation of the neuraminidase of the virus particles abolishes their ability to induce Ka alteration, even though hemagglutinin activity is retained. Treatment of cells with neuraminidase of bacterial origin led to an elevation of Ka, but did not mimic the viral effect in time dependence and magnitude of peak responses. The time-dependent lowering of Ka from peak values appeared to relate to virus replication, since UV light-inactivated virus-induced Ka elevation, but did not produce the typical Ka decline at 4-5 h post infection. The changes in Ka of anti-H-2 binding during influenza infection reflects a virus- induced alteration of the H-2 molecule or its environment in the host cell membrane. The molecular basis of this change and its relation to H-2-restricted recognition of influenza virus-infected cells by cytotoxic T cells requires further study. 相似文献

International guidelines recommend to reduce blood pressure (BP) levels below 130/80 mmHg in non-dialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. However, this BP target has not been validated by randomized controlled trials and is mainly driven by data obtained in observational and post-hoc analyses suggesting that it improves the renal and, to some extent, cardiovascular prognosis. The inconclusive results on the prognostic role of the BP target in patients with CKD might also relate to the limited ability of office BP readings to adequately stratify the global risk of this population. In fact, alterations of the pressure profile (such as white-coat hypertension) and nighttime hypertension are common in CKD patients. Recent studies have demonstrated that ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) is superior to clinic BP measurements in predicting renal death and cardiovascular events. Therefore, while waiting for the results from the ongoing randomized Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT) comparing the effect on cardiorenal prognosis of two BP target levels, the more widespread use of ABPM is desirable in CKD patients. 相似文献

Misconceptions about HIV transmission and prevention may inhibit individuals’ accurate assessment of their level of risk.
We used venue-based sampling to conduct a cross-sectional study of heterosexually active adults (N = 1,221) within areas exhibiting high poverty and HIV/AIDS rates in Miami-Dade and Broward counties in 2007. Two logistic
regression analyses identified correlates of holding inaccurate beliefs about HIV transmission and prevention. Belief in incorrect
HIV prevention methods (27.2%) and modes of transmission (38.5%) was common. Having at least one incorrect prevention belief
was associated with being Hispanic compared to white (non-Hispanic), being depressed, and not knowing one’s HIV status. Having
at least one incorrect transmission belief was associated with being younger, heavy alcohol use, being depressed, not having
seen a physician in the past 12 months, and not knowing one’s HIV status. Among low-income heterosexuals, HIV prevention and

Summary. Lettuce mottle virus (LeMoV) and dandelion yellow mosaic virus (DaYMV) infect lettuce in South America and Europe, respectively.
LeMoV and DaYMV possess isometric particles, occur at low concentrations in plants and have narrow host ranges. Partial genome
sequences of both viruses were obtained using purified viral preparations and universal primers for members of the family
Sequiviridae. DaYMV and LeMoV sequences were analyzed and showed identity with other members of the family. Universal primers that detect
both viruses and specific primers for LeMoV and DaYMV were designed and used in RT-PCR-based diagnostic assays. These results

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of titanium surface characteristics on bone integration of implants, and to describe the pattern of peri-implant tissue healing after simultaneous implant placement and guided bone regeneration. In four healthy mongrel dogs mandibular premolars were extracted. Two weeks following full mouth prophylaxis and 4 months after extractions, simultaneous membrane and implant surgeries were performed. Efforts were made to produce bony defects with dimensions of 7 x 7 x 7 mm. Into these, 24 standard ITI implants (diameter = 4.1 mm; length = 8 mm) with either a titanium plasma-sprayed (TPS) or a machined surface (MS) were placed. Although implants were inserted 4 mm into cancellous bone, difficulties in achieving optimal primary stability were encountered. All dogs were maintained on a soft diet. Chlorhexidine rinses were performed three times a week. Full mouth prophylaxis was performed every 2 weeks. In the case of membrane exposure, the membranes were removed prematurely (4-6 or 14-15 weeks after surgery). Two dogs were sacrificed at 16 weeks and two at 24 weeks after surgery. Nondecalcified histologic sections were processed and histometric analyses were carried out. When membranes were removed after 4-6 weeks, a vertical bone growth (VB) of 45-61% of the original defect was noted. After membrane removal at 14-15 weeks, similar VB was observed. However, if membranes were left in situ for 24 weeks, VB was between 79% and 96%. In this group of sites, the VB was 66% at 16 weeks and 86% at 24 weeks. Osseointegration in the regenerated bone area ranged from 12% to 32% for the TPS and from 0.0% to 3.6% for the MS implants at 16 and 24 weeks combined. Osseointegration in the pristine host bone area ranged from 16% to 35% for the TPS and from 0.0% to 11% for the MS sites at 16 and 24 weeks. In conclusion, the fraction of implant-bone integration was much higher in the pristine bone compared to that in the regenerated bone. TPS surfaces positively influenced the fraction of osseointegration in comparison to MS surfaces for both regenerated and pristine bone. Youth in urban areas with a history of running away from home often have special needs. Importantly, risk factors for HIV/AIDS
might be associated with such a history. We assessed the association between having a history of running away from home and
the occurrence of HIV infection and risk behavior among young men who have sex with men (YMSM), aged 15–22 years. A cross-sectional
epidemiologic and behavioral survey was conducted between 1995 and 1996 in Miami, Florida, as part of a national Young Men’s
Survey. Of 488 YMSM, the prevalence of HIV infection among those with a history of running away from home was 10.5% (adjusted
odds ratio=3.4; 95% Cl 1.5–7.8). YMSM who had ever run away were more likely to be HIV infected, be out of school, and have
ever had vaginal or anal sex with females, been forced to have sex, injected drugs, and used needles for self-tattooing or
body piercing. The prevalence of HIV infection and associated risk behaviors among runaways was high, highlighting the ongoing
need for prevention and social support services for youth with a history of running away from home. 相似文献

The myenteric plexus undergoes adaptive changes under several conditions. Mucosal and muscular alterations of the colon have been described after fecal stream diversion but studies concerning the myenteric plexus after this procedure are scarce. Therefore, 28 Wistar rats were submitted to fecal diversion and followed for different periods (30, 60, 120 and 180 days), in order to study the myenteric plexus of the excluded segments. Seven non-operated rats were employed as control. The myenteric plexus was subsequently evaluated with the NADH and NADPH histochemical techniques. The colonic area of excluded segments is significantly decreased. The density of NADH-stained neurons continuously increases during the entire postoperative period but does not match the extent of surface reduction. Neuronal area measurements suggest hypertrophy of the remaining neurons in the late postoperative period. Morphological alterations of myenteric ganglia and neurons were also evident. An important surface area reduction combined with slight density increase points toward significant neuronal loss after fecal diversion. While studies correlating neuronal loss and functional changes are still lacking, surgeons should bear in mind the modifications of the myenteric plexus when performing fecal stream diversion surgeries. 相似文献
