A two‐step synthesis of structurally diverse pyrrole‐containing bicyclic systems is reported. ortho‐Nitro‐haloarenes coupled with vinylic N‐methyliminodiacetic acid (MIDA) boronates generate ortho‐vinyl‐nitroarenes, which undergo a “metal‐free” nitrene insertion, resulting in a new pyrrole ring. This novel synthetic approach has a wide substrate tolerance and it is applicable in the preparation of more complex “drug‐like” molecules. The structure of neutron-rich beryllium isotopes has been investigated using different heavy-ion-induced transfer reactions. In neutron transfer reactions, the population of final states shows a strong sensitivity to the chosen core nucleus, i.e., the target nuclei 9Be or 10Be, respectively. Molecular rotational bands up to high excitation energies are observed with 9Be as the core due to its pronounced 2α-cluster structure, whereas only a few states at low excitation energies are populated with 10Be as the core. For 11Be, a detailed investigation has been performed for the three states at 3.41, 3.89, and 3.96 MeV, which resulted in the most probable spin-parity assignments 3/2+, 5/2?, and 3/2?, respectively. Furthermore, we have studied particle-hole states of 16C using the 13C(12C, 9C)16C reaction and found 14 previously unknown states. We introduce a new technique for imaging oxygen concentrations in fuel/air mixtures that takes advantage of the different
responses of toluene and 3-pentanone to collisional quenching by molecular oxygen. Since laser-induced fluorescence signals
from both tracers upon excitation at 248 nm are spectrally well separated, simultaneous detection is possible. The technique
is first applied to instantaneous imaging in turbulent mixing processes of interacting seeded air and nitrogen flows.

Gradient surfaces allow rapid, high-throughput investigations and systematic studies in many disparate fields, including biology, tribology and adhesion. We describe a novel method for the fabrication of material-independent morphology gradients, involving a two-step process of particle erosion followed by a chemical polishing procedure that preferentially removes features with a small radius of curvature as a function of time. Gradients are fabricated on aluminium surfaces, but they may be readily transferred to other materials via a replication technique, which allows for the production of identical roughness gradient samples with any chosen surface chemistry. The gradients have been characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy and optical profilometry. Standard roughness parameters (Ra, Rq, Rz, Sm and Sk) were calculated from optical profilometry data. α,β-Unsaturated nitriles can be hydrogenated with enantioselectivities up to 88% ee using chiral ruthenium-diphenylphosphino bisaryl and bisheteroaryl complexes such as ruthenium(II)-BINAP and ruthenium(II)-BINP. Mechanistic investigations indicate that conversion is accelerated by electron-rich ligands and that an additional coordinative group needs be present in order to promote conversion.
