Improving the ambulatory surgical services on the basis of the work experience of the Center of Ambulatory Surgery

Centers of ambulatory surgery made on the basis of large city polyclinics and regional medical formations are considered to be a perspective and economically effective form of perestroika of the ambulatory surgical aid to people. Specificity of the operative procedures performed at the Center and specific features of postoperative management of the patients should be taken into consideration, and the staff of such units must consist of highly trained surgeons of wide type. The ambulatory surgery Center must occupy its place in the system of dispensary examinations of the population.     

Hygienic standardization of chemical elements in water with allowance for mineral metabolism]

Analysis of data on chronic toxicity of chemical elements and their metabolism in the human organism show the actual equality of the maximum ineffective dose and the daily dose. Authors considered, that the 2-fold excess of actual dose is not harmful for the human health.     

Changes in regional pulmonary hemodynamics and levels of vasoactive substances in man in a state of antiorthostatic hypokinesia

A comparative evaluation of rheographic changes in regional pulmonary hemodynamics and renin-angiotensin and kinin-kallikrein activities was carried out on 9 volunteers exposed to antiorthostatic hypokinesia (-8 degrees) for 14 days. It was found that pulmonary circulation shifted in the apical direction due to increase in arterial tonicity and phasic variations of venous lumen. During the study blood renin increased significantly (P less than 0.05) whereas prekallikrein and kallikrein inhibitor varied insignificantly. It was concluded that the renin-angiotensin system played and important role in the changes of functional topography of pulmonary circulation in simulated microgravity conditions.     

Effect of Dehydroepiandrosterone on Avoidance Behavior of Adult Male Rats

We studied the effect of repeated intraperitoneal treatment with dehydroepiandrosterone in doses of 0.1 and 0.7 mg/kg on conditioned-response activity and behavior of adult male rats. The effect of dehydroepiandrosterone on learning was estimated in conditioned active and passive avoidance response paradigms. Chronic administration of dehydroepiandrosterone in low and high doses had no effect on retention of conditioned passive avoidance response in adult male rats 24 h after learning. However, chronic administration of dehydroepiandrosterone in low dose impaired acquisition of the conditioned active avoidance response. It should be emphasized that chronic administration of dehydroepiandrosterone in high dose did not modulate acquisition and retention of this reaction.     

Delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol increases C6 glioma cell death produced by oxidative stress

(-)Delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol is a scavenger of free radicals. However, the activation of the CB1 receptor in cultured C6 glioma cells by (-)delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol in the presence of reagents generating reactive oxygen species leads to amplification of the cellular damage from oxidative stress. This was evident by increased loss of cell wall integrity, impaired mitochondrial function and reduction of glucose uptake. In addition, (-)delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol treatment was also found to be deleterious to the cells under conditions of glucose starvation. Free radicals have been implicated in various conditions leading to cell death and, as a routine, the Fenton reaction is utilized for modeling reactive oxygen species production. Our study was performed using a cell permeating Fe(III) chelating quinone that provides more physiological conditions for mimicking the naturally occurring oxidative stress within the cell and thus serves as a better model for natural reactive oxygen species formation.     

Postcoital contraception in primates. II. Examination of STS 153 and STS 287 as interceptives in the baboon (Papio hamadryas)]

The interceptive activity of 2 new synthesized steroid compounds: STS 153 (17 beta-Phenylaminocarbonyloxy-estra-1,3,5(10)-triene-3-methyl ether and STS 287 (16 alpha-Bromo-17 beta-[N',N'-dimethylhydrazino]-carbonyloxy-estra-1,3,5(10)-triene-3-methyl ether) and of 17 alpha-Ethynylestradiol was investigated in baboons.--Postcoital oral administration of 1--3 mg/kg b. w. STS 153 for 5--7 days and of 1 mg/kg b. w. STS 287 for 5 days resulted in a fertility inhibition of about 90% and 95% respectively. A dose of 2 mg/kg b. w. of ethynylestradiol was necessary to attain complete fertility inhibition. Following administration of STS 153 and STS 287, side effects were not observed. Pharmacokinetic aspects are discussed.
