The measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) provides an indicator of subsequent risk of hip fracture, but because of the significant overlap of measurements obtained from osteoporotic and control groups its predictive power is limited. The radiographic technique of Singh grading for the assessment of femoral osteoporosis utilizes information about the distribution of trabecular bundles, but the morphological information available in the DXA image has not previously been analysed. In this study of DXA images from 64 individuals (32 controls and 32 classified as osteoporotic) a subjective grading technique analogous to Singh grading is proposed, and quantitative measurements are made of image features corresponding to two of the categories. Discrimination was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves: the best discrimination was by spinal BMD (Az = 0.85 +/- 0.05) a performance equalled by one of the new parameters; the subjective grading method (Az = 0.79 +/- 0.07) performed as well as measurements of BMD in the femur. These results suggest that although the alternative measures do not improve on the discrimination possible using spinal BMD, morphological information from the hip itself may in the future have a place in the assessment of bone quality.  相似文献

Twenty mothers of preterm babies who had survived to 1 year old, were matched for age and parity of the mother and time of birth of the baby, with 20 mothers delivering fullterm. Bone mineral, body composition and anthropometric measurements were obtained for each mother and analysed using paired t-tests. The only significant difference (P < 0.01) between the groups was a lower fat-free mass in the preterm mothers calculated from skinfold thickness measurements.  相似文献

We use a spatially explicit, stochastic model to analyse the effectiveness of different scales of local control strategies in containing the long-term, multi-seasonal spread of a crop disease through a dynamically changing population of susceptible crops in which there is cryptic infection. The model distinguishes between susceptible, infested and symptomatic fields. It is motivated by rhizomania disease on sugar beet in the UK as an exemplar of a spatially structured and partially asymptomatic epidemic. Our results show the importance of matching the scales of local control strategies to prevent intensification and regional spread of disease with the inherent temporal and spatial scales of an epidemic. A simple field-scale containment strategy, whereby the susceptible crop is no longer grown on fields showing symptoms, fails for this system with cryptic infection because the locally applied control lags behind the epidemic. A farm-scale strategy, whereby growers respond to the disease status of neighbouring farms by transferring their quota for sugar beet to farmers in regions of reduced risk, succeeds. We conclude that a soil-borne pathogen such as rhizomania could be managed by movement of susceptible crops in the landscape using a strategy that matches the temporal and spatial scales of the epidemic and which take account of risk aversion among growers. We show some parallels and differences in effectiveness between a 'culling' strategy involving crop removal around emerging foci and the local deployment of partially resistant varieties that reduce amplification and transmission of inoculum. Some relationships between the control of plant and livestock diseases are briefly discussed.  相似文献

1. Cataract is the single major cause of blindness worldwide; however, the reasons for the development of this condition remain unknown. It has been suggested that the essential amino acid tryptophan may be implicated in the aetiology but definitive evidence has been lacking. 2. The serum levels of tryptophan and seven of its metabolites have been measured in both cataract patients and control subjects, after administration of tryptophan, in order to determine the typical response profile and to discover whether differences could be found in tryptophan metabolism in the two groups. 3. Tryptophan, kynurenine, kynurenic acid, xanthurenic acid, 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid, 5-hydroxyanthranilic acid, 5-hydroxytryptophan and anthranilic acid were measured by HPLC with dual electrochemical and programmable wavelength fluorescence detection. Fasting cataract patients (n = 42) and control subjects (n = 37) were given an oral dose of L-tryptophan and sera were sampled at 0, 1, 2, 4 and 6 h. 4. Statistically significant differences in the distribution of data between the two groups were observed. The responses of kynurenine and 5-hydroxyanthranilic acid were higher in cataract patients, but those of kynurenic acid and total tryptophan were lower than in control subjects. No statistically significant differences in free tryptophan, anthranilic acid, 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid, xanthurenic acid or 5-hydroxytryptophan levels were noted. 5. We conclude that there is a major subgroup of age-related cataract patients with a dysfunction in the metabolism of tryptophan. This may be related to the onset of cataract. The mechanism remains to be established but may operate via the action of tryptophan metabolites, such as 5-hydroxyanthranilic acid, which become reactive towards protein upon oxidation.  相似文献

The relative distribution of sensitizer drugs in the prostate and its contiguous organs is of importance in the treatment of localized prostatic cancer with photodynamic therapy. Using the primate model, whose prostate is both morphologically and physiologically homologous with its human counterpart, the distribution of hematoporphyrin derivative (HpD) amongst organs of urological interest was determined. Hematoporphyrin derivative levels were comparatively low in both caudal and cranial prostatic lobes (0.93-1.77 micrograms/g) and were similar to those in rectum, urethra and the skin. The reticuloendothelial organs, liver, spleen and also the kidney accumulated the highest quantities of porphyrin (4.76-9.8 micrograms/g, liver > spleen > kidney). Despite a high avidity of prostatic tissue for zinc, a zinc-metalloporphyrin (Zn-HpD) did not concentrate selectively in the prostate. The results are of clinical value in view of the homology between the primate and the human.  相似文献

Seasonal influenza has considerable impact around the world, both economically and in mortality among risk groups, but there is considerable uncertainty as to the essential mechanisms and their parametrization. In this paper, we identify a number of characteristic features of influenza incidence time series in temperate regions, including ranges of annual attack rates and outbreak durations. By constraining the output of simple models to match these characteristic features, we investigate the role played by population heterogeneity, multiple strains, cross-immunity and the rate of strain evolution in the generation of incidence time series. Results indicate that an age-structured model with non-random mixing and co-circulating strains are both required to match observed time-series data. Our work gives estimates of the seasonal peak basic reproduction number, R0, in the range 1.6–3. Estimates of R0 are strongly correlated with the timescale for waning of immunity to current circulating seasonal influenza strain, which we estimate is between 3 and 8 years. Seasonal variation in transmissibility is largely confined to 15–30% of its mean value. While population heterogeneity and cross-immunity are required mechanisms, the degree of heterogeneity and cross-immunity is not tightly constrained. We discuss our findings in the context of other work fitting to seasonal influenza data.  相似文献

Molecular mechanisms associated with the anti-/pro-oxidative properties of carotenoids (CARs) are described in organic solvents, micro-heterogeneous environments and model lipid membranes and in cellular suspensions. Singlet oxygen is important in the skin and eye and CARs are efficient singlet oxygen (SO) quenchers with corresponding rate constants near diffusion controlled (typically app. 101? M?1 s?1) with lycopene (LYC) exhibiting the most efficient quenching in organic solvents. However, in membrane environments there is little or no difference in the quenching efficiency between the dietary CARs. Furthermore, aggregation of CARs, particularly those in the macula (lutein and zeaxanthin), markedly reduces SO quenching efficiency. Free radical interactions with CARs leads to at least three processes, electron and hydrogen atom transfer and adduct formation. The most studied is electron transfer where the CAR loses an electron to become a radical cation. The reactivity/lifetime of such CAR radicals may lead to a switch from anti- to pro-oxidant behaviour of CARs. These reactions are related to CAR redox potentials with LYC being the lowest (most easily oxidised) allowing LYC to reduce/repair all other CAR radical cations and LYC 'sacrificed' where mixtures of CARs are present in oxidative environments. Such redox-controlled reactions may lead to deleterious as well as beneficial health effects.  相似文献

This paper details experiments aimed at optimising the conditions for the determination of glucosinolates in rapeseed (Brassica napus L) using the colorimetric thymol procedure. Glucose could not be substituted for sinigrin when preparing a standard curve for glucosinolate determination unless a correction factor was employed. The value of this factor was found to depend on the concentration of sulphuric acid. Although the coloured complexes formed between thymol and either glucose or sinigrin were found to be unstable at 100°C, the sinigrin/ glucose colour ratio remained relatively constant for incubation times from 40 to 60 min. It was found necessary to increase the amount of thymol present to a final value of 0.23% to ensure complete reaction of glucosinolates. The revised method can be employed successfully for the analysis of glucosinolates in both seed and meal.  相似文献

In this paper we present reliable measurements of the pressure variation of the spin diffusion coefficient of normal liquid3He in the limiting low-temperature Fermi fluid regime. Deviations from the bulk liquid behavior are observed for a sample confined to a 5-µm glass capillary array in which the mean free path of the3He quasiparticles is of the order of the capillary diameter. These deviations are believed to indicate that the spin momentum specular reflection coefficient is less than unity but greater than zero in this system.  相似文献
