Although principal component analysis (PCA) is an important tool in standard multivariate data analysis, little interest has been devoted to assessing whether the underlying relationship within a given variable set can be described by a linear PCA model or whether nonlinear PCA must be utilized. This paper addresses this deficiency by introducing a nonlinearity measure for principal component models. The measure is based on the following two principles: (i) the range of recorded process operation is divided into smaller regions; and (ii) accuracy bounds are determined for the sum of the discarded eigenvalues. If this sum is within the accuracy bounds for each region, the process is assumed to be linear and vice versa. This procedure is automated through the use of cross-validation. Finally, the paper shows the utility of the new nonlinearity measure using two simulation studies and with data from an industrial melter process. 相似文献

This paper focuses on the procedure utilized in the construction of tilt-up irregular concrete panels that are constructed on-site using concrete slabs and wooden formwork. The case study required high-quality concrete finishing. The erection and installation procedure called for a maximum panel-to-panel joint tolerance of 1.27?cm (0.5?in.), often 90° joints between panels. To meet precision requirements, the casting slabs were leveled and flattened with laser screed technology and smoothed with chemical solutions. To ensure that the final result met expectations, a mock-up model was built using different types of materials and to simulate site constraints. The architectural design is a composition of precast concrete panels like “Lego” pieces assembled similarly to a jigsaw puzzle. The unique construction process required a state-of-the-art analysis to produce the set quality. Quality conditions as set by the owner included creating a smooth concrete surface on all panels while avoiding damages and reducing equipment and material costs. The proposed methodology is described through its implementation on the case study, which is also described in this paper. 相似文献

Management practices for irrigation schemes can often be improved by modelling the behaviour of a scheme and by evaluating its efficiency statistics. However, looking at an irrigation scheme without regard for other water uses within the river basin may not be effective. Efficiencies computed in this way are local and, since water may be used many times within the same basin, may not be realistic. Changes in water uses (e.g. irrigation, industrial, power production, urban water supply, navigation, environmental, recreational) will often have effects on other uses; and changes in irrigation schemes (management,structural, crop pattern) may affect other users within the basin. In addition, all water users will be affected by external changes such as changes in land cover or in climate. As demand for water increases, these links become more important until, at some stage, there is insufficient water for all users and hard choices must be made. Hydrological modelling is a tool that can be used to relate irrigation schemes to the other water uses within a river basin and can help in assessing real productivities and in evaluating alternative patterns of water usage. For joining and repair of continuous fiber thermoplastic composites, induction heating has been viewed a strong candidate. Induction heating employs an applied alternating magnetic field, which induces a rotational emf in a grid of conductive carbon fibers, which are then used to carry resulting currents. In continuous carbon fiber crossply composites the available paths for “eddy current” loops are along the network of conductive carbon fibers. For this to occur, an electrical transfer must take place between crossing fibers in adjacent plies. Tests involving variable thicknesses of interply neat film layers have been performed to provide insight into the mechanisms taking place. These tests indicate that the primary mechanism for heating in such laminates is dielectric losses in the polymeric region between fibers in adjacent planes that form the conductive loop. Therefore, heating is not uniform in such composites despite a uniform magnetic flux. Heating patterns were viewed using liquid crystal materials and E-type thermocouples. Several factors leading to nonhomogeneous thermal distributions have been considered, including current density effects, internal emf cancellation, and rotational field effects. Global and local considerations are addressed, a localized model is proposed, and the corresponding theory is developed qualifying the early results. Additional testing has supported the theory. 相似文献

Autonomic dysfunction in insulin-dependent diabetic (IDDM) patients has been associated with abnormalities of left ventricular function and an increased risk of sudden death. A group of 30 patients with IDDM and 30 age, sex and blood pressure matched control subjects underwent traditional tests of autonomic function. In addition, baroreceptor-cardiac reflex sensitivity (BRS) was assessed using time domain (sequence) analysis of systolic blood pressure and pulse interval data recorded non-invasively using the Finapres beat-to-beat blood pressure recording system. 'Up BRS' sequences-increases in systolic blood pressure associated with lengthening of R-R interval, and 'down BRS' sequences-decreases in systolic blood pressure associated with shortening of R-R interval were identified and BRS calculated from the regression of systolic blood pressure on R-R interval for all sequences. We also assessed heart rate variability using power spectral analysis and, after expressing components of the spectrum in normalised units, assessed sympathovagal balance from the ratio of low to high frequency powers. IDDM subjects underwent 2-D echocardiography to assess left ventricular mass index. Standard tests of autonomic function revealed no differences between IDDM patients and control subjects, but dramatic reductions in baroreceptor-cardiac reflex sensitivity were detected in IDDM patients. 'Up BRS' when supine was 11.2 +/- 1.5 ms/mmHg (mean +/- SEM) compared with 20.4 +/- 1.95 in control subjects (p < 0.003) and when standing was 4.1 +/- 1.9 vs 7.6 +/- 2.7 ms/mmHg (p < 0.001). Down BRS when supine was 11.5 +/- 1.2 vs 22 +/- 2.6 (p < 0.001) and standing was 4.4 +/- 1.9 vs 7.3 +/- 2.5 ms/mmHg (p < 0.003). There were significant relations between impairment of the baroreflex and duration of diabetes (p < 0.001) and poor glycaemic control (p < 0.001). From a fast Fourier transformation of supine heart rate data and using a band width of 0.05-0.15 Hz as low-frequency and 0.2-0.35 Hz as high frequency total spectral power of R-R interval variability was significantly reduced in the IDDM group for both low-frequency (473 +/- 62.8 vs 746.6 +/- 77.6 ms2 p = 0.002) and high frequency bands 125.2 +/- 12.9 vs 459.3 +/- 89.8 ms2 p < 0.0001. When the absolute powers were expressed in normalised units the ratio of low frequency to high frequency power (a measure of sympathovagal balance) was significantly increased in the IDDM group (2.9 +/- 0.53 vs 4.6 +/- 0.55, p < 0.002 supine: 3.8 +/- 0.49 vs 6.6 +/- 0.55, p < 0.001 standing). Thus, time domain analysis of baroreceptor-cardiac reflex sensitivity detects autonomic dysfunction more frequently in IDDM patients than conventional tests. Impaired BRS is associated with an increased left ventricular mass index and this abnormality may have a role in the increased incidence of sudden death seen in young IDDM patients. 相似文献
