The presence of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) from mono to hepta brominated and 11 hydroxylated (OH-) and methoxylated (MeO-) PBDEs was examined in 37 breast milk samples collected from 11 mothers living in Barcelona. An extraction method based on accelerated solvent extraction followed by gas chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry was used to inequivocally identify all target compounds at the low pg g(-1) lw level. Data obtained were examined for absolute and relative concentrations and specific PBDE, OH- and MeO-PBDE congener patterns. Sigma PBDE concentration ranged between 1,161 and 1,372,797 pg g(-1) lw and BDEs 47, 99, 100, 153 and 183 accounted for more than 80% of the total PBDEs. All tri and tetra OH- and MeO-PBDEs compounds were detected at levels between 6 and 14,984 pg g(-1)lw. The median ratio OH/PBDE and MeO-PBDEs/PBDEs was from 2.9% to 1.6%, respectively, suggesting either that PBDE metabolism to OH- and MeO- derivatives is not an important degradation route in humans or either OH- and MeO-PBDEs are rapidly excreted. No significant correlation was observed between PBDEs and OH- and MeO-PBDE, although OH- and OMe-PBDEs co-occurred in mothers' milk (R(2)=0.5349). According to the daily intake of PBDEs and OH- and MeO-PBDEs, which was between 0.47 and 363 ng d(-1) (excluding a smoking donor), potential health risks associated with these compounds are assessed.  相似文献

Passive air samplers consisting of polyurethane foam (PUF) disks housed in chambers were deployed at several sites along a approximately 75 km urban-rural gradient in Toronto and analyzed for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Samplers were allowed to integrate gas-phase PBDEs over three consecutive seasons starting in the summer of 2000. PBDEs were fairly uniform along the transect with air concentrations in Toronto (10-30 pgm(-3)) about a factor of two greater than at rural sites. Lowest concentrations were observed during the winter and probably associated with reduced inputs from indoor sources of PBDEs and to a preference for PBDEs to partition to the particle-phase at colder temperatures. The composition of PBDEs in the air samples did not differ across the transect or for the different seasons.  相似文献

Uptake rates of several PCDDs, PCDFs and PCBs were measured for semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) under controlled conditions in bulk water and sediment. The study was performed at 19 degrees C and 11 degrees C, and water and sediment concentrations were measured during the exposure. Linear uptake rates for specific PCDD/Fs and PCBs in 19 degrees C water varied from 34 to 111 l/m2 day and in 11 degrees C water from 8.8 to 96 l/m2 day for the whole SPMD. Uptake rates at 19 degrees C sediment ranged from 9.0 to 80 mgOC/m2 day and in 11 degrees C sediment, from 3.0 to 31, mgOC/m2 day. Partitioning of the compounds between membrane and lipid was also measured during the linear uptake phase. The membrane-lipid concentration ratios ranged from 0.02 to 1.11 depending on the compound, temperature, and bulk medium.  相似文献

We determined breast milk concentration of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs)/polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in 24 mothers living in Korea, and assessed the maternal body burden based on PCDDs/PCDFs and PCBs concentrations in breast milk and an infant intake rate through breast-feeding based on their concentration in breast milk. PCDDs/PCDFs and PCBs levels in breast milk from primipara mothers were found to be higher than those from multipara mothers. For total PCDDs/PCDFs TEQ level, 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDD was the predominant congener, and the proportion of 2,3,7,8-TCDD was less than 3% of total PCDDs/PCDFs TEQ level. For PCBs TEQ level, PCB-126 was the predominant congener. Maternal body burden levels of PCDDs/PCDFs and PCBs based on their concentrations in breast milk were 268-622 TEQ ng. The daily dioxin intakes of mothers were predicted to be 0.78-2.18 TEQ pg/kg/day for PCDDs/PCDFs and 0.34-0.66 TEQ pg/kg/ day for PCBs. For the first year, the body burden of an infant was predicted to be 212 TEQ ng and the daily intake of an infant was predicted to be 85 TEQ pg/kg/day, assuming the mean dioxin-related compounds concentration (27.54 TEQ pg/g fat).  相似文献

A method for the determination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in biota for routine analysis is described. The mass spectroscopic (MS) evaluation of 23 brominated diphenyl ethers, under electron ionization and electron capture negative ion conditions using magnetic sector and quadrupole mass spectrometers, showed that high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) under electron ionization conditions was the most reliable technique, with high selectivity and adequate sensitivity. The instrument detection limit for this method ranged for individual congeners between 4.8 and 0.1 pg for 3-bromodiphenyl ether (BDE-2) and 2,3',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-66), respectively, and method detection limit for each homologue group ranged between 5 pg/g for salmon certified reference material (CRM) and 93 pg/g for lake trout CRM. The effectiveness of this method was evaluated by analyzing the occurrence of PBDEs in commercially available CRMs comprising Lake Ontario lake trout, Pacific herring, and sockeye salmon. The average coefficients of variation for the replicate analyses of PDBEs in several tissue samples were: 25% for lake trout, 36% for Pacific herring, and 34% for sockeye salmon. The average deviations in the inter-laboratory study were: 14% for lake trout, 15% for Pacific herring, and 37% for sockeye salmon. Results indicated that the described method, based on gas chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry, is reliable for determining PBDE concentrations in biological tissues.  相似文献

Mono-alkyl phthalate esters (MPEs) are primary metabolites of di-alkyl phthalate esters (DPEs), a family of industrial chemicals widely used in the production of soft polyvinyl chloride and a large range of other products. To better understand the long term fate of DPEs in the environment, we measured the biodegradation kinetics of eight MPEs (-ethyl, -n-butyl, -benzyl, -i-hexyl, -2-ethyl-hexyl, -n-octyl, -i-nonyl, and -i-decyl monoesters) in marine and freshwater sediments collected from three locations in the Greater Vancouver area. After a lag period in which no apparent biodegradation occurred, all MPEs tested showed degradation rates in both marine and freshwater sediments at 22 °C with half-lives ranging between 16 and 39 h. Half-lives increased approximately 8-fold in incubations performed at 5 °C. Biodegradation rates did not differ between marine and freshwater sediments. Half-lives did not show a relationship with increasing alkyl chain length. We conclude that MPEs can be quickly degraded in natural sediments and that the similarity in MPE degradation kinetics among sediment types suggests a wide occurrence of nonspecific esterases in microorganisms from various locations, as has been reported previously.  相似文献

A trickling filter/solid contact (TF/SC) biological secondary treatment plant with chlorine disinfection serving a suburban population of 740,000 was assessed for environmental estrogens. Weekly grab samples were taken at established sampling points and analyzed for various pertinent environmental estrogens including industrial chemicals, and natural and synthetic steroidal estrogens. Additionally, human estrogen receptor (hER) activity and capacity to elicit intersex/sex reversal for the wastewater was monitored using a recombinant yeast assay and whole fish exposures, respectively. hER activity levels varied from 76 to 106 ng/L E2 equivalents in the primary effluent, and were reduced by 25% by biological treatment. For the primary and final effluent no evidence of sex reversal or intersex was apparent in any of the treatment groups (1%, 3%, 10%, or 100%) based on genetic sex determinations and histological examination of the gonads in alevin from 28 d exposed chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) eggs.  相似文献

The photochemistry of a major commercial polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardant congener, 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexabromodiphenyl ether (BDE153), was investigated in acetonitrile, distilled water, and seawater. After a short irradiation period in acetonitrile at 302 nm, the major photoproducts of BDE153 included 2,2',4,4',5-(BDE99), 2,2',4,5,5'-(BDE101), and 2,4,4',5,5'-(BDE118) substituted penta-BDEs as primary photohydrodebromination products, 2,2',4,4'-(BDE47), 3,3',4,4'-(BDE77), 2,3',4,4'-(BDE66), and 2,2',4,5'-(BDE49) substituted tetra-BDEs as secondary photohydrodebromination products, a suite of non-2,3,7,8-substituted mono- through penta-brominated dibenzofurans, and three tetrabrominated 2-hydroxybiphenyl congeners. By comparison, irradiation in distilled water and seawater gave increased relative photohydrodebromination contributions and no evidence for the formation of brominated dibenzofurans or 2-hydroxybiphenyls. In all solvent systems, subsequent degradation of primary and secondary photoproducts under continuing irradiation led to a steadily decreasing reaction mass balance. The results suggest a short photochemical half-life for BDE153 in aquatic systems, with rapid photohydrodebromination to some of the most prevalent penta- and tetra-brominated diphenyl ether congeners typically observed in environmental matrices.  相似文献

This study was conducted to examine PBDE exposure in Koreans, with a special focus on incinerator workers due to their potential for occupational exposure to PBDEs. A total of 92 blood samples from 30 incinerator workers, 51 nearby residents and 11 controls were analyzed. The mean total PBDE concentration calculated from the 13 most concentrated congeners for all samples was 16.84+/-7.48 ng/g lipid, which was somewhat higher concentration than in other countries except North America and Canada. The PBDE levels and congener profiles detected in incinerator workers were not distinctly different from those found in the general population. In all groups tested, BDE-47 was dominant (mean contribution=32.5%) followed by BDE-153 (23.6%) and relatively high portions of BDE-183 (16.5%) were found. No strong trend was observed between PBDE levels and a number of key biological factors examined in this study, however, weak correlations were observed in PBDE levels measured against dietary habits, particularly in fish consumption frequency and gender. Overall, our data suggest that the occupational exposure of incinerator workers to PBDEs can be considered minor, while other lifestyle factors can have a greater contribution to PBDE exposure.  相似文献
