With the advent of Smartphone technology, access to the internet and its associated knowledge base is at one’s fingertips. What consequences does this have for human cognition? We frame Smartphone use as an instantiation of the extended mind—the notion that our cognition goes beyond our brains—and in so doing, characterize a modern form of cognitive miserliness. Specifically, that people typically forego effortful analytic thinking in lieu of fast and easy intuition suggests that individuals may allow their Smartphones to do their thinking for them. Our account predicts that individuals who are relatively less willing and/or able to engage effortful reasoning processes may compensate by relying on the internet through their Smartphones. Across three studies, we find that those who think more intuitively and less analytically when given reasoning problems were more likely to rely on their Smartphones (i.e., extended mind) for information in their everyday lives. There was no such association with the amount of time using the Smartphone for social media and entertainment purposes, nor did boredom proneness qualify any of our results. These findings demonstrate that people may offload thinking to technology, which in turn demands that psychological science understand the meshing of mind and media to adequately characterize human experience and cognition in the modern era.  相似文献

Many smartphone apps routinely gather various private user data and send them to advertisers. Despite recent study on protection mechanisms and analysis on apps’ behavior, the understanding of the consequences of such privacy losses remains limited. In this paper, we investigate how much an advertiser can infer about users’ social and community relationships. After one month’s user study involving about 190 most popular Android apps, we find that an advertiser can infer 90% of the social relationships. We further propose a privacy leakage inference framework and use real mobility traces and Foursquare data to quantify the consequences of privacy leakage. We find that achieving 90% inference accuracy of the social and community relationships requires merely 3 weeks’ user data. Finally, we present a real-time privacy leakage visualization tool that captures and displays the spatial–temporal characteristics of the leakages. The discoveries underscore the importance of early adoption of privacy protection mechanisms.  相似文献

Smartphone addiction and its negative effects on academic performance have received attention from both scholars and practitioners. The gist of this study is to explore the impact of the type of content use on smartphone addiction and academic performance by considering physical activity as a potential moderator. The data were gathered from 250 undergraduate students and statistically analysed using the partial least squares structural equation modelling technique. The results show that entertainment, social networking sites, and game-related use have positive effects on smartphone addiction. Although study-related use has a positive effect on academic performance, game-related use has a negative effect. Furthermore, physical activity moderates negatively the impact of game-related use on academic performance. The results extend the literature on smartphone addiction by introducing physical activity as a preventive factor and will be useful for policymakers and parents to understand the importance of developing and promoting physical activity among young adults.  相似文献

In this advanced age, when smart phones are the norm, people utilize social networking, online shopping, and even private information storage through smart phones. As a result, identity authentication has become the most critical security activity in this period of the intelligent craze. By analyzing the shortcomings of the existing authentication methods, this paper proposes an identity authentication method based on the behavior of smartphone users. Firstly, the sensor data and touch-screen data of the smart phone users are collected through android programming. Secondly, the eigenvalues of this data are extracted and sent to the server. Thirdly, the Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) are introduced to train the collected data on the server end, and the results are finally yielded by the weighted average. The results show that the method this paper proposes has great FRR (False Reject Rate) and FAR (False Accept Rate).  相似文献

Many pervasive computing applications depend upon maps for support of location based services. Individuals can determine their location outdoors on these maps via GPS. Indoor pervasive applications may also need to know the layout of buildings, however indoor maps are less prevalent. This paper presents iFrame, a dynamic approach that leverages existing mobile sensing capabilities for constructing indoor floor plans. We explore how iFrame users may collaborate and contribute to constructing 2-dimensional indoor maps by merely carrying smartphones. A deployment study shows iFrame is an unattended approach that provides a skeleton map of a real building effectively and automatically.  相似文献
