In mouse models, apolipoprotein A-V (apoA-V) exhibits triglyceride (TG)-lowering effects. We investigated the apoA-V/TG relationship and the association of apoA-V with coronary artery disease (CAD) risk by determining serum apoA-V levels and genotypes in a nested case-control (n = 1,034/2,031) study. Both univariate and multivariate apoA-V levels showed no association with future CAD (P = 0.4 and 0.5, respectively). Unexpectedly, there was a significant positive correlation between serum apoA-V and TG in men and women (r = 0.36 and 0.28, respectively, P < 0.001 each) but a negative correlation between apoA-V and LPL mass (r = -0.14 and -0.12 for men and women respectively, P < 0.001 each). The frequency of the c.56C>G polymorphism did not differ between cases and controls despite significant positive association of c.56G with both apoA-V and TG levels. For -1131T>C, the minor allele was significantly associated with lower apoA-V yet higher TG levels and was overrepresented in cases (P = 0.047). The association of -1131T>C with CAD risk, however, was independent of apoA-V levels and likely acts through linkage disequilibrium with APOC3 variants. The positive correlation of apoA-V levels with TG levels, negative correlation with LPL levels, and lack of association with CAD risk highlight the need for further human studies to clarify the role of apoA-V.  相似文献

The embryo of Toxoneuron nigriceps (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) is surrounded by an extraembryonic membrane, which, at hatching, releases teratocytes and gives rise to a cell layer embedding the body of the 1st instar larva. This cell layer was studied at different developmental times, from soon after hatching up to the first larval moult, in order to elucidate its ultrastructural, immunocytochemical and physiological function. The persisting "larval serosa" shows a striking structural and functional complexity: it is a multifunctional barrier with protective properties, limits the passage of macromolecules and it is actively involved in the enzymatic processing and uptake of nutrients. The reported results emphasizes the important role that the embryo-derived host regulation factors may have in parasitism success in Hymenoptera koinobionts.  相似文献

The stage-dependent effects of starvation on the growth, metamorphosis, and ecdysteroidogenesis of the prothoracic glands during the last larval instar of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, were studied in the present study. When last instar larvae were starved beginning on day 1 of that instar, all larvae died between days 5 and 7 of the instar. Although the prothoracicotropic hormone (PTTH) release from the brain-corpus cardiacum-corpus allatum (BR-CC-CA) did not significantly change during starvation, a deficiency in PTTH signal transduction was maintained, which led to very low levels of hemolymph ecdysteroids after the beginning of starvation. However, when starvation began on day 3 of the last larval instar, the major hemolymph ecdysteroid peak, preceding larval-pupal transformation, occurred 1 day earlier than that in control larvae. Protein content of the prothoracic glands in day 3-starved larvae was maintained at a low level as compared to that of control larvae. The secretory activity of the prothoracic glands in day 3-starved larvae was maintained at a level similar to that of control larvae. However, the rate of ecdysteroidogenesis, expressed per microgram of glandular protein, was greatly enhanced in these starved larvae, indicating that upon starvation, larvae increased the ecdysteroid production rate to enhance the rate of survival.  相似文献

We examined the effect of larval and adult nutrition on worker honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) ovary development. Workers were fed high or low-pollen diets as larvae, and high or low-protein diets as adults. Workers fed low-protein diets at both life stages had the lowest levels of ovary development, followed by those fed high-protein diets as larvae and low- quality diets as adults, and then those fed diets poor in protein as larvae but high as adults. Workers fed high-protein diets at both life stages had the highest levels of ovary development. The increases in ovary development due to improved dietary protein in the larval and adult life stages were additive. Adult diet also had an effect on body mass. The results demonstrate that both carry-over of larval reserves and nutrients acquired in the adult life stage are important to ovary development in worker honey bees. Carry-over from larval development, however, appears to be less important to adult fecundity than is adult nutrition. Seasonal trends in worker ovary development and mass were examined throughout the brood rearing season. Worker ovary development was lowest in spring, highest in mid-summer, and intermediate in fall.  相似文献

In this study, I explored the interactions among host diet, nutritional status and gastrointestinal parasitism in wild bovids by examining temporal patterns of nematode faecal egg shedding in species with different diet types during a drought and non-drought year. Study species included three grass and roughage feeders (buffalo, hartebeest, waterbuck), four mixed or intermediate feeders (eland, Grant's gazelle, impala, Thomson's gazelle) and two concentrate selectors (dik-dik, klipspringer). Six out of the nine focal species had higher mean faecal egg counts in the drought year compared to the normal year, and over the course of the dry year, monthly faecal egg counts were correlated with drought intensity in four species with low-quality diets, but no such relationship was found for species with high-quality diets. Comparisons of dietary crude protein and faecal egg count in impala showed that during the dry season, individuals with high faecal egg counts (> or =1550 eggs/g of faeces) had significantly lower crude protein levels than individuals with low (0-500 eggs/g) or moderate (550-1500 eggs/g) egg counts. These results suggest that under drought conditions, species unable to maintain adequate nutrition, mainly low-quality feeders, are less able to cope with gastrointestinal parasite infections. In particular, during dry periods, reduced protein intake seems to be associated with declining resilience and resistance to infection.  相似文献

Summary. The mechanism by which glutamine produces a favorable effect in the treatment of sepsis, injury, burns and abdominal irradiation is not completely understood. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of alanyl-glutamine (AlaGln) administration on the metabolism of proteins in irradiated rats. The rats were exposed to whole-body irradiation (8 Gy) and then fed intragastrically with a mixture of glucose and amino acids either with AlaGln or without AlaGln. At 48 hours after irradiation, parameters of whole-body protein metabolism and DNA synthesis in intestinal mucosa were investigated using a primed, continuous infusion of [1-14C]leucine and [3H]thymidine. In addition, we evaluated the effect of irradiation and AlaGln on gut morphology, blood count and amino acid concentrations in blood plasma and skeletal muscle. Control rats were not irradiated but were given identical treatment. An increase in whole-body leucine oxidation, and insignificant changes in whole-body proteolysis and in protein synthesis were observed after irradiation. In irradiated rats we observed a decrease in muscle glutamine concentration, a decrease in protein synthesis in jejunum, colon and heart, and an increase in synthesis of proteins of blood plasma and spleen. Morphological examination and measurement of DNA synthesis failed to demonstrate any favorable effect of AlaGln supplementation on irradiated gut. However, administration of AlaGln resulted in a decrease in whole-body proteolysis and leucine oxidation which caused an increase in the fraction of leucine incorporated into the pool of body proteins. We conclude that the data obtained demonstrate that irradiation induces metabolic derangement associated with increased oxidation of essential branched-chain amino acids (valine, leucine and isoleucine) and that these disturbances can be ameliorated by administration of AlaGln. Growth responses of some soil fungi to spatially heterogeneous nutrients   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Abstract The natural nutritional environments of most fungi are spatially non-uniform, yet the majority of studies of fungal growth take no account of this fact. An experimental system is described which permits the growth responses of eucarpic fungi to heterogeneously distributed nutrient resources to be studied. The system comprises tesselations of agar tiles of contrasting nutrient status separated by air gaps. Growth responses in such systems of Alternaria alternata, Mucor sp., Phoma foveata , Rhizoctonia solani and Trichoderma viride are described. Generally, the growth of the fungi reflected the nutrient status of the underlying substrate. There was evidence for growth in low-nutrient tiles being greater when high-nutrient tiles were included in the tessellation. Reproductive structures tended to be formed only in low nutrient tiles with Trichoderma and Rhizoctonia and only high nutrient tiles with Alternaria . Growth responses of Rhizoctonia were strongly asymmetric in nutritionally symmetric, but heterogeneous, tesselations. The consequences of the observations for fungal growth in heterogeneous environments such as soil is discussed.  相似文献

Tree decline and deaths have been observed among 15 to 20-year-old Scots pines (Pinus sylvestris L.) in a dry heath forest in southwestern Finland. The sudden decline in height growth, the dieback of leading shoots and the yellowing of needles in young shoots in the upper part of the tree are typical symptoms of the decline of these young pines. Needle ultrastructure and chemical composition of Scots pines with or without decline and fluctuations of them in different seasons were studied. Afflicted trees were found to suffer from a deficiency in calcium and magnesium with low concentration of foliar nitrogen and phosphorus observed in all the trees studied. Ultrastructural study revealed changes characteristic of different seasons and measured nutrient status of needles. A clear reduction of membrane system in chloroplasts, especially related to Mg deficiency, was observed in most samples. The symptoms related to N deficiency, the translucent appearance of the cytoplasm and chloroplast stroma, and the elongated chloroplasts, as well as swelling of mitochondria, indicating P deficiency, were also found in the needles sampled from this forest decline area. The present study showed that it is possible to detect specific nutrient deficiency symptoms in needle ultrastructure in field samples and for use as sensitive indicators of unbalanced nutrient status.  相似文献

 根据在鼎湖山季风常绿阔叶林集水区3年的观测结果,对这一南亚热带地带性植被的水文功能进行了较深入的探讨。由于林分结构复杂,季风常绿阔叶林对大气降水具有较高的林冠截留率,截留率的季节变化动态与降水量的季节分配有关。该森林土壤结构良好,其渗水速度快,加上有较厚的枯落物层,对于减缓地面径流,减少水土流失,功效甚大。但由于土层较薄,其蓄水功能有限。该森林的径流量占总降水量的比例特别是地表径流所占比例较小,分别为50.22%和14.19%。其季节分配有利于保持水土和植物生长。由于土壤蓄水量变化出现负值,用水量平衡法计算得出鼎湖山季风常绿阔叶林年蒸发散量为1323.98mm,占大气降水量的51.81%。该森林的降水中主要营养元素浓度较高,降水带来大量的养分,特别是氮素的年输入量高达35.29kg·hm-2。淋溶也给该森林带来较高的养分归还量,其中钾的淋溶量高达35.65kg·hm-2;镁的淋溶量高达8.9kg·hm-2,为林外雨输入的2.37倍。径流中的氮输出为28.35kg·hm-2,降水中的氮素净输入量为6.94kg·hm-2;但镁的净输入呈负值。  相似文献
