Summary The diversity of two sympatrically distributed barley species (Hordeum vulgare L. and Hordeum spontaneum C. Koch.) has been assessed for 7 morphometric and 13 qualitative traits. Phenotypically, Hordeum vulgare was more stable than Hordeum spontaneum for all morphometric traits; this is a reflection of domestication and selection. The overall diversity indexes were 0.546±0.125 and 0.502±0.113 for Hordeum vulgare and Hordeum spontaneum, respectively (P=0.095). However, Hordeum spontaneum expressed a higher level of diversity for most qualitative traits. The observed similarity for a number of diversity indexes is probably due to gene flow between the two species. 相似文献

Microcomputerized video image analysis was adapted for rapid, objective, and non-intrusive quantification of shoot growth and development for plants growing in vitro. Custom-developed staging arrangements were essential to insure accurate viewing and representation of the plants in each of three standard culture vessels. Shoot length measurements from digitized culture images were strongly correlated with length measured manually ex vitro. Image analysis weighted density measurements of proliferating microcultures (even with irregular growth habits) provided a reliable indicator of shoot culture fresh weight. Summary Pretensile forces were measured in individual threads of intact spider webs. In the orb web of Araneus diadematus forces decrease from mooring threads to frame threads and radii, a typical ratio being 1071. The smaller number of radii in the upper than in the lower half of the orb is paralleled by force ratios of 21 to 31. A similar difference between radii built first during web construction and radii added after completion of the frame underlines the importance of the former as part of the scaffolding. High tensions in the auxiliary spiral stabilize the radii in addition to providing a pathway for the spider when inserting the sticky spiral. Radial pretension (F) changes with spider mass (m). F/m is similar for different animals indicating an adaptation of radial forces to those resulting from spider mass. Several observations suggest tension control by the spider. When forced to anchor its web to thin flexible rods tension in the threads remains in the normal range. Tension values are similar in the webs of A. diadematus, Zygiella x-notata, Nuctenea umbratica, and Nephila clavipes indicating independence from details of web geometry. Only the mooring threads of Nephila show unusually large forces suggesting a narrower working range of tensions for the catching area than for the scaffolding. 相似文献

Summary Individuals of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acarina: Tetranychidae), with and without a capacity for diapause, coexist in central Japan. Diapause appears to be adaptive because females in diapause suffered less mortality than non-diapausing individuals when frozen at –24°C for more than 4 h. However non-diapausing females showed good survival up to 4 h of freezing. Active non-diapausing mites survived on rose leaves in Kyoto (35°N) throughout the winters of 1988–1989 and 1989–1990. Cultures of mites with low (LD) and high (HD) diapause capacities at 18°C and 9L-15D photoperiod were successfully selected from the rose population and from a population on chrysanthemum in Nara (34.4°N). Their life-history traits at 15, 20, 25 and 30°C were characterized. HD and LD mites from both populations were of similar ages at first reproduction at 15–30° C. However, at temperatures 20° C, HD individuals produced more eggs than LD individuals, resulting in higher fecundity and intrinsic rate of natural increase. These traits allow HD individuals, which stop breeding between October and April, to increase faster in summer than LD individuals. This provides a mechanism, together with climatic fluctuations, in maintaining the coexistence of diapausing and non-diapausing T. urticae in Kyoto where winter conditions are rarely lethal to the non-diapausing individuals. 相似文献

Summary A new method of in vivo pH determination in the xylem of broad-leaved trees using ion-sensitive field effect transistors is developed and its suitability for use is studied. In the first few hours after the sensor had been implanted in the xylem signals could be detected which were generated in response to mechanical damage; particularly strong signal changes are detectable in Populus balsamifera L., Tilia cordata Mill, and Aesculus hippocastanum L. The pH values of the xylem sap extracted from branches corresponded to the values measured by the in vivo method only at certain times. Due to sensor drift the measuring accuracy of long-term experiments lasting up to 3 weeks is restricted. in India, and their incidence reported. Using C.A.B. Smith’s angular transformation of frequencies, the multivariate Thetasquare
distances and their respective standard deviations have been presented. On the basis of nonmetrical cranial variation, it
is clear that the samples from Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar are closer to each other but distant from Madhya Pradesh,
Karnataka and Maharashtra. On the other hand, Karnataka and Maharashtra samples are quite close to each other and both, in
turn, are comparatively closer to Madhya Pradesh than to Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar. Madhya Pradesh sample emerges
as the most divergent group among the six population samples studied. This, in general, is in conformity with the picture

A combined method is described for the determination of various metabolites from a single tissue sample of the brain. It comprises a quick inactivation of cerebral enzymes by microwave irradiation, easy separation of the desired brain regions, and perchloric acid extraction of tissue substances, which are assayed either by specific enzymatic techniques or by HPLC with electrochemical detection. The obtained values of most energy and neurotransmitter metabolites in the brain are in agreement with those reported using other methods. However, this technique, in contrast to the brain freezing in vitro or freeze-blowing, provides a more efficient procedure for rapid arrest of cerebral metabolism even in the deep brain structures and is therefore suitable for detection of early changes particularly those occurring in experimental pathological conditions such as ischemia. 相似文献

Summary The nature and origin of the isozymes and the techniques for their detection in forest trees are briefly reviewed. The theories used to interpret the isozyme variation are summarized. Recent isozyme variation studies in provenance research are discussed in relation to known variation pattern detected by classical nursery and field tests. The populations of a tree species can be sometimes, but not always, distinguished by their isozyme patterns. For a number of species, relationships between environment of origin of the provenances and some isozyme frequencies have been statistically established. In one case (Picea sitchensis) where direct comparison between the variation pattern detected by isozymes and the genetic variation of silviculturally important traits was possible, no meaningful relationships between both patterns could be detected. Nei's genetic distances and indices of gene diversity do not appear to be useful in provenance research. The concept of genetic distance based on gene frequencies is probably not very useful in provenance research either. 相似文献

Abstract Plasticity in growth, reproductive energy allocation (RA), and reproductive output were studied in Glycine max Merr. Cv. Enrei (Leguminosae) grown under varying densities and soil nitrogen levels.
Marked plastic responses were detected in individual biomass, the patterns of resource allocation to total reproductive structures (RA) and also to propagules, reproductive outputs, and propagule weight under changing densities and soil nitrogen levels. Plants cultivated at higher densities exhibited proportionately lower individual biomass, lower RA, lower seed output, and smaller seed size in response to increasing density and decreasing soil nitrogen levels, although some deviations were observed, especially in the highest density plot with no fertilization. Differences due to different N-levels were not as great as those to changing density, which may in part be due to the fact that soybean has nitrogen-fixing bacteria in root tubercles, just as in any other Leguminosae. Fecundity was also maintained at the similar high rates of 80–97% in all plots examined, although slight but steady decreases were noted with increasing density. This resemblance in fecundity may be due to its strong inbreeding system.
Another important finding was that seed production under limited resource availability, notably lack of ample solar radiation due to strong interference at higher density plots, is exceedingly costly. This was most clearly exhibited by a sharp increase in relative energy partitioning to a single propagule in response to the increased density, the relative energy cost to a single propagule (RA) increasing from one to seven-fold. The results obtained in this study coincide well with the findings made in other plants, e.g., Helianthus annuus, Oryza sativa , and Coix ma-yuen , with the same experimental designs. 相似文献
