The aphid genus Crypromyzus was studied using starch. el electrophoresis in order to establish differences between the various taxa and to estimate their paylogenetic relationships. A low degree of polymorphism and heterozyosity was observed. Taxa previously assumed to be homogeneous appeared to consist of different tost-secific forms. Polymorphism at the PGI locus was used to assess the degree of isolation. It was founf to range from complete separation to a reduction in gene flow. Three methods of estimating hylogenetic relationships were employed: the UPGMA clustering method using Nei's genetic distance; the Rogers distance together with the distance Wagner method and the independent allele model of Mickevich and Mitter (1981) combined with the Wagner parsimony method. The results of all three methods agree that several of the taxa are closely related but assign different lower branching points to the phylogenetic tree.   1. To improve biological control and habitat management, how pest predators spread from natural habitats to crops must be understood. We studied whether intrinsic differences in stable-isotopic ratios of C and N from an artificial C4 (sugar-cane) or C3 (muti-flower honey) diet could help mark and track predators that feed on them.
  2. Two aphid predators solely feeding on sugar resources as adults were used: the green lacewing Chrysoperla carnea s.l., and the parasitic wasp Aphidius colemani. δ13C and δ15N values from wild individuals helped distinguish them from marked ones and determine the habitat resources they used.
  3. Green lacewings fed on C4 showed significantly higher δ13C values than those on C3 and wild individuals. However, parasitoid values were unaffected, with no mark acquired. Logistic regression was fitted to assess the probability of green lacewings having either diet with a probability of 0.93. Marks were acquired after 5 days and were detectable 20 days after switching diets with a probability of 0.67. Similar δ15N values for both wild populations indicated both predators had similar prey, but different vegetal resources (different δ13C values).
  4. Sugar-cane honey is a natural and reliable marker for tracking lacewing populations in the field, but not for parasitoids.

Insects harbor a wide range of microbial symbionts, but their influence on host phenotypes is described in a limited number of biological models. One experimental approach to gain knowledge on the effects of symbionts to their hosts is to create insect lines with and without symbionts and examine their phenotypes. However, the success rate of symbiont elimination and introduction methods is dependent on several parameters that are scarcely tested or described. The pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is a model insect of symbiosis studies. It harbors a primary symbiont that supplies the host with essential amino acids, and an array of secondary symbionts whose effects have been assessed by manipulating their presence/absence in the insect. Here, we describe the influence of key parameters on the success rate of symbiont manipulation using the pea aphid–secondary symbiont system. We compared two elimination methods differing in antibiotic treatment using several aphid–symbiont combinations. We also created new aphid host–symbiont combinations by secondary symbiont introduction and examined the effects of larval stage of recipient aphids on introduction success. Our study revealed that the aphid–symbiont combination has strong influence on both symbiont introduction and elimination success rates, and that the type of antibiotics and the larval stage of recipient aphids influence the elimination and introduction success rate, respectively.  相似文献

The rose aphid showed a significant level of nonpreference for concentrations of 0.3 mg/ml catechin and above, whether in a simple base diet of sucrose or a complex artificial diet containing in addition to other components a total amino acid content equivalent to that found in the sap pressed from the pedicels of rose-buds. Similar concentrations of catechin were found in the pressed sap from pedicels of nonpreferred buds in the field. A number of factors influenced absolute values for deterrence: increased concentrations of sucrose and especially amino acids lowered the deterrence of catechin; early instars showed nonpreference for low concentrations of catechin that were nondeterrent to the later instars. A possible explanation for such variation was provided by discovery that the aphids were able to alter the phenolic composition of diets during feeding, converting catechin into condensation products that were either phagostimulant or nondeterrent.
Résumé M. rosae n'a pas présenté de dissuation significative en présence de catéchine à des concentrations voisines de 0,3 mg/ml, soit dans un aliment simple à base de sucrose, soit dans un aliment complexe contenant, entre autres, des acides aminés avec une concentration totale correspondant à celle obtenue à partir du jus de tisses de rosier écrasés. Des concentrations voisines de catéchine ont été obtenues à partir du jus provenant de tisus écrasés pour lequel ce puceron ne montrait aucune préférence dans la nature. Un certain nombre de facteurs influent sur la valeur absolue du pouvoir dissuasif: l'augmentation de la concentration en sucrose et surtout en acides aminés réduit cet effet dissuasif; les stades jeunes n'ont pas présenté de préférence pour les concentrations faibles en catéchine que avaient semblé attractive pour les stades âgés.Une hypothèse plausible pour expliquer de telles variations a été élaborée à partir de l'observation de la modification, par le puceron, au cours de sa succion, de la composition phénolique de l'aliment, avec transformation de la catéchine en polymères oxydés attractifs. Il est possible que tout ce qui augmente l'activité oxydase polyphénolique de la salive des insectes, réduise ou inverse l'effet de la tenuer originelle de la catéchine.

Abstract

Sampling of bluegreen lucerne aphid showed that the most efficient method differs according to the time of year and the height of the lucerne. In late June 1976, when the lucerne was short (mean height 3.6 cm), an area removal sample of 700 cm2 was more efficient to achieve a 10% degree of precision (half-width of a confidence limit) than area samples of 80 and 300 cm2, suction sampling of the same areas, and stem sampling. In early spring (lucerne height 11.7 cm) the 80 cm2 area removal sample was the most efficient. Just before the second hay cut (late January), the length of lucerne stems (62.5 cm) precluded use of any area removal technique; stem samples were most efficient. The cost in time was fuliy considered in sampling method comparisons. Possible differences with population density were not considered.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine if coccinellids adjusted their distribution within spring wheat fields in response to spatial variation cereal aphid density in the fields and to describe the patterns of cereal aphid population growth that resulted. Field experiments were completed in which the physical dimensions of patches infested with cereal aphids, cereal aphid density, and access to patches by coccinellids were varied. Aphid infestations consisted of naturally occurring densities (natural patches) and much greater densities created by supplementing patches with aphids (supplemented patches). Coccinellids were denied access to some supplemented patches (exclusion patches) but allowed unlimited access to others. Densities of adult Hippodamia convergens and Coccinella septempunctata were correlated with aphid density in patches whereas density of Coleomegilla maculata was not. Aggregation by coccinellids was independent of patch area. The realized aphid population growth rate (r) was lower in supplemented than natural patches in all four trials but was significantly lower in only one trial. The lower r in supplemented patches was not exclusively caused by coccinellid predation, and emigration of aphids from patches probably also contributed. r was significantly greater in exclusion patches than supplemented and natural patches, indicating that coccinellids markedly reduced aphid numbers in patches even when aphid density was extremely high.
