Identification of boundary conditions of tapered beam-like structures using static flexibility measurements

The integrity and reliability of the beam-like structures are dependent in part on their boundary conditions, which can vary with time due to damage or aging, thus the identification of boundary conditions might be one of the most significant aspects for damage detection of such structures. This paper investigates a direct method for identifying the boundary conditions of tapered beam-like structures using static flexibility measurements. The beam is modeled by a flexible tapered beam, which is constrained at one end by translational and rotational springs. The translational and rotational springs are utilized to simulate the boundary conditions of the tapered beam, and the purpose of this paper is to identify the stiffnesses of the translational and rotational springs, i.e. translational root stiffness and rotational root stiffness. It is theoretical proved that the static flexibility measured on the beam can be expressed as a function of the flexural rigidity of the beam at its constrained end, translational root stiffness and rotational root stiffness. Then, a set of linear equations for identifying the translational and rotational root stiffnesses are formed by three or more different static flexibility measurements. Finally, the proposed method is validated using both simulative and experimental examples.

Local flexibility of an elliptical cracked shaft under bending and tension

Compared with the widely used straight front crack model, an elliptical front crack has been found to be more accurate and realistic for modeling the transverse surface crack in rotating machinery. Therefore, based on the strain energy release rate (SERR) approach and the closed-form results of SIFs, the local flexibilities of an elliptical cracked shaft submitted to bending, axial tension and combination of both are derived and solved by means of numerical integration technique. Once the elliptical front and shape variation are considered, the obtained flexibility values are reduced obviously in contrast with the current results, especially for the deeper surface cracks.

A preliminary investigation of cognitive flexibility for emotional information in major depressive disorder and non-psychiatric controls.

Clinical research suggests that individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) are cognitively inflexible, exhibiting ruminative, rigid, and automatic thoughts within a negative schema. However, existing neuropsychological research on cognitive flexibility in this population has not employed emotional stimuli. Because research suggests that the performance of individuals with MDD is modulated when emotional stimuli are used, this study investigates the impact of emotional stimuli on cognitive flexibility performance through a novel emotional modification of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. Controls were less flexible when stimuli were positive and individuals with MDD were less flexible when stimuli were negative relative to the controls. A state space analysis of emotion and flexibility in parent-child interactions.

Negative emotion has been shown to reduce flexibility in cognition and behavior. We examined interpersonal flexibility during negative emotional episodes within parent-child interactions. Fifty-five mothers and early-adolescent daughters were observed during a positive discussion, a negative (conflict) discussion, and another positive discussion. Codes of moment-to-moment changes in emotion expression were used to create state space grids from which measures of emotional valence and flexibility were derived. As expected, mean flexibility was lowest during the conflict discussion when negative emotion peaked, suggesting that interpersonal flexibility decreases with increasing negative emotion. Sub-groups identified as low or high in stress were also compared. Dyads with girls reporting more stressful events showed lower flexibility during the first positive discussion. However, dyads expressing more negative emotion during the conflict discussion were also more flexible, suggesting that flexible dyadic styles permit more negative emotion.
