Ongoing changes along the northeastern Atlantic coastline provide an opportunity to explore the influence of climate change and multitrophic interactions on the recovery of kelp. Here, vast areas of sea urchin‐dominated barren grounds have shifted back to kelp forests, in parallel with changes in sea temperature and predator abundances. We have compiled data from studies covering more than 1,500‐km coastline in northern Norway. The dataset has been used to identify regional patterns in kelp recovery and sea urchin recruitment, and to relate these to abiotic and biotic factors, including structurally complex substrates functioning as refuge for sea urchins. The study area covers a latitudinal gradient of temperature and different levels of predator pressure from the edible crab (Cancer pagurus) and the red king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus). The population development of these two sea urchin predators and a possible predator on crabs, the coastal cod (Gadus morhua), were analyzed. In the southernmost and warmest region, kelp forests recovery and sea urchin recruitment are mainly low, although sea urchins might also be locally abundant. Further north, sea urchin barrens still dominate, and juvenile sea urchin densities are high. In the northernmost and cold region, kelp forests are recovering, despite high recruitment and densities of sea urchins. Here, sea urchins were found only in refuge habitats, whereas kelp recovery occurred mainly on open bedrock. The ocean warming, the increase in the abundance of edible crab in the south, and the increase in invasive red king crab in the north may explain the observed changes in kelp recovery and sea urchin distribution. The expansion of both crab species coincided with a population decline in the top‐predator coastal cod. The role of key species (sea urchins, kelp, cod, and crabs) and processes involved in structuring the community are hypothesized in a conceptual model, and the knowledge behind the suggested links and interactions is explored.  相似文献

One of the major challenges for understanding the ecological impact of escaped farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) is predicting their dispersal patterns after an escape event. Here, we quantify the behaviour of escaped farmed salmon using a simulated-escape experiment within a Norwegian fjord system. Thirty-seven individuals were tagged with acoustic transmitters and their spatial distribution, horizontal movements and diving behaviour was monitored throughout the fjord and accompanying rivers using 29 acoustic receivers. A rapid movement away from the release site occurred. There was no movement into the rivers feeding the fjord and there was no preference for residence at the fish farms: nearly a third of the individuals had a final detection in the outer part of the fjord and no detections occurred from approximately 2 months after release. As it is unlikely that all fish died or remained undetected within the study area it is reasonable to assume that a substantial proportion of the fish moved out of the fjord system. If a recapture program is not implemented immediately after an escape event, we recommend spreading potential recapture efforts over a relatively large area.  相似文献

1 Host tree terpenes can influence attraction of conifer‐infesting bark beetles to their aggregation pheromones, and both synergistic and inhibitory effects have been reported. 2 We tested a gradient of ratios of (–)‐α‐pinene, the predominant monoterpene in Norway spruce, to the pheromone of Ips typographus, a major pest of Norway spruce. 3 Attraction of I. typographus increased as the release rate of (–)‐α‐pinene increased. The two highest (–)‐α‐pinene : pheromone ratios (526 : 1 and 2595 : 1) attracted twice as many I. typographus as pheromone alone, whereas low to intermediate ratios (56 : 1, 274 : 1) did not differ from pheromone alone. 4 Our results are in agreement with a proposed model, which suggests that bark beetles display unique response profiles to host terpenes depending on the physiological condition of the host trees that they typically colonize. Ips typographus, which is an aggressive species capable of colonizing and killing healthy trees, showed an increased attraction to monoterpene : pheromone ratios, and this may be high enough to inhibit attraction of less aggressive beetle species typically colonizing dead, dying or stressed trees. 5 Attraction of associates of I. typographus was also modified by (–)‐α‐pinene. Ips duplicatus, a competitor of I. typographus, showed increased attraction to the pheromone of I. typographus across all concentrations of (–)‐α‐pinene.  相似文献

Heat aggregation of human IgG has been studied by photon correlation spectroscopy, ultracentrifugation, circular dichroism, and differential scanning calorimetry. It is found that pooled human IgG can be separated into two fractions of molecules, one that easily aggregates and one that is stable upon heating. In a buffer atpH=7.6 and 0.2 M NaCl it is found that about half of the original monomeric molecules do not aggregate even after heating at 62°C for 24 h. No differences in the antigen binding capacity of the heat-stable fraction and normal IgG are observed. Heat-stable molecules can partially be transformed to heat-aggregating molecules by a rapid acid denaturation followed by neutralization. Differential scanning calorimetry shows that the major heat denaturation, which is a two-phase process atpH=7.6, starts at about 63°C. Only minor differences between the heat-stable and the heat-labile fractions are observed in the thermograms. No differences are observed in the far-UV region of the CD spectra, indicating that the secondary structure of the heat-stable IgG does not differ from the native IgG molecule. While the aggregation of normal human IgG can be described by Smoluchowski kinetics, the heat-stable fraction follows another kinetics, which includes an activation step.  相似文献

Summary The depolarization of the sensory terminals of muscle spindle primary endings is studied in terms of a simplified core conductor model of the system. The terminals branching from a group Ia afferent fibre have different geometrical structures, depending on whether they innervate the nuclear bag or the nuclear chain intrafusal fibres of a muscle spindle.The depolarization of the two different structures as a function of space and time is analysed by digital simulation technique. The studies indicate that the tapered core conductor model of the bag-fibre terminals responds faster than a uniform system similar to the terminals innervating the nuclear chain fibres. The steady state response, on the other hand, appears to supply a more effective depolarization in the case of a uniform system with otherwise equivalent parameters.The results suggest that the bag fibre terminals are best suited for converting dynamical stimuli into an electrical signal, whilst the chain fibre terminals seem to yield a more effective steady state response. The results are discussed in relation to the functional properties of the mammalian muscle spindles and in relation to the earlier proposed models of the mechanical system represented by the two types of intrafusal muscle fibres.  相似文献

Different modifications of Mahalanobis' generalized distance (D2) utilized in anthropological research are given, and it is shown that they all derive from the distribution of D2 when the distances between the populations investigated are real. To investigate whether observed distances are real, testing of D2 for significance is stressed. It is demonstrated that D2 ought to be tested for significance according to its relation to the F-distribution, but that it may be related to the chi-squared distribution as an approximation when the numbers of individuals in the samples are very large. The great disadvantages of utilizing this approximation for smaller numbers of individuals in the samples are demonstrated, as well as the dependence of D2 on sample size and the number of measurements used when testing for significance.  相似文献
