The assessment of leaf strategies has been a common theme in ecology, especially where multiple sources of environmental constraints (fire, seasonal drought, nutrient-poor soils) impose a strong selection pressure towards leaf functional diversity, leading to inevitable tradeoffs among leaf traits, and ultimately to niche segregation among coexisting species. As diversification on leaf functional strategies is dependent on integration at whole plant level, we hypothesized that regardless of phylogenetic relatedness, leaf trait functional syndromes in a multivariate space would be associated with the type of growth form. We measured traits related to leaf gas exchange, structure and nutrient status in 57 coexisting species encompassing all Angiosperms major clades, in a wide array of plant morphologies (trees, shrubs, sub-shrubs, herbs, grasses and palms) in a savanna of Central Brazil. Growth forms differed in mean values for the studied functional leaf traits. We extracted 4 groups of functional typologies: grasses (elevated leaf dark respiration, light-saturated photosynthesis on a leaf mass and area basis, lower values of leaf Ca and Mg), herbs (high values of SLA, leaf N and leaf Fe), palms (high values of stomatal conductance, leaf transpiration and leaf K) and woody eudicots (sub-shrubs, shrubs and trees; low SLA and high leaf Ca and Mg). Despite the large range of variation among species for each individual trait and the independent evolutionary trajectory of individual species, growth forms were strongly associated with particular leaf trait combinations, suggesting clear evolutionary constraints on leaf function for morphologically similar species in savanna ecosystems.  相似文献

A central issue in plant evolutionary ecology is to understand how several coordinated suites of traits (i.e. traits syndrome) may be jointly selected within a single species. This study aims to describe patterns of variation and co‐variation of functional traits in a water‐stressed tree population and test their relationships with performance traits. Within a Mediterranean population of Fagus sylvatica experiencing recurrent summer droughts, we investigated the phenotypic variation of leaf unfolding phenology, leaf area (LA), leaf mass per area (LMA), leaf water content (LWC), water use efficiency (WUE) estimated by carbon isotopic discrimination (d13C), twig Huber‐value (HV: the stem cross‐section divided by the leaf area distal to the stem), wood density (WDens), and leaf nitrogen content (Nmass). First, a principal component analysis revealed that two main axes structured the phenotypic variability: the first axis opposed leaf unfolding earliness and LWC to LMA and WUE; the second axis opposed LA to HV. These two axes can be interpreted as the opposition of two strategies (water economy versus water uptake) at two distinct scales (leaf for the first axis and branches for the second axis). Second, we found that LMA, LA, leaf unfolding and LWC responded differently to competition intensity, while WUE, WDens and HV did not correlate with competition. Third, we found that all studied functional traits were related to growth and/or reproductive performance traits and that these relationships were frequently non‐linear, showing strong interactions between traits. By highlighting phenotypic clustering of functional traits involved in response to water stress and by evidencing antagonistic selection favouring intermediate trait values as well as trait combinations, our study brought new insights on how natural selection operates on plant functional traits in a stressful environment.  相似文献

A high-resolution comparative RH map of porcine Chromosome (SSC) 2   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A high-resolution comparative map was constructed for porcine Chromosome (SSC) 2, where a QTL for back fat thickness (BFT) is located. A radiation hybrid (RH) map containing 33 genes and 25 microsatellite markers was constructed for this chromosome with a 3000-rad porcine RH panel. In total, 16 genes from human Chromosome (HSA) 11p, HSA19p, and HSA5q were newly assigned to SSC2. One linkage group was observed at LOD 3.0, and five linkage groups at LOD 4.0. Comparison of the porcine RH map with homologous human gene orders identified four conserved segments between SSC2 and HSA11, HSA19, and HSA5. Concerning HSA11, a rearrangement of gene order is observed. The segment HSA11p15.4-q13 is inverted on SSC2 when compared with the distal tip of SSC2p, which is homologous to HSA11p15.5. The boundaries of the conserved segments between human and pig were defined more precisely. This high-resolution comparative map will be a valuable tool for further fine mapping of the QTL area. Lethality of rep recB and rep recC double mutants of Escherichia coli   总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3  
A rep mutation in combination with a recB or a recC mutation renders Escherichia coli non-viable. This conclusion is based on the following lines of evidence: (i) double mutants cannot be constructed by P1 transduction; (ii) induction of the λ Gam protein, which inactivates most of the RecBCD activities, is lethal in rep mutants; (iii) rep recBts recCts mutants are not viable at high temperature. The reasons for a requirement for the RecBCD enzyme in rep strains were investigated. Initiation of chromosome replication, elongation and chromosomal segregation do not seem impaired in the rep recBts recCts mutant at the non-permissive temperature. The viability of other rep derivatives was tested. rep recA recD triple mutants are not viable, whereas rep recD and rep recA double mutants are. Inactivation of both exoV activity and recBC -dependent homologous recombination is therefore responsible for the non-viability of rep recBC strains. However, sbcA and sbcB mutations, which render recBC mutants recombination proficient, do not restore viability of rep recBC mutants, indicating that recombination via the RecF or the RecE pathways cannot functionally replace RecBCD-mediated recombination. The specific requirement for RecBCD suggests the occurrence of double-strand DNA breaks in rep strains. Additional arguments in favour of the presence of DNA lesions in rep mutants are as follows: (i) expression of SOS repair functions delays lethality of rep derivatives after inactivation of RecBCD; (ii) sensitivity of rep strains to ultraviolet light is increased by partial inactivation of RecBCD. A model for the recovery of cells from double-strand breaks in rep mutants is discussed.  相似文献

Thromboxane (TX) B2, the chemically stable hydration product of pro-aggregatory TXA2, undergoes two major pathways of metabolism in man, resulting in the formation of 2.3-dinor-TXB2 and 11-dehydro-TXB2, respectively. We have measured the excretion of the latter during the infusion of exogenous TXB2 over a 50-fold dose range in order to examine the fractional conversion of TXB2 to urinary 11-dehydro-TXB2 and to re-assess the rate of entry of endogenous TXB2 into the circulation. Four healthy male volunteers received 6-h intravenous infusions of the vehicle alone and TXB2 at 0.1, 1.0 and 5.0 ng.kg-1.min-1 in random order. They were pretreated with aspirin 325 mg/d in order to suppress endogenous TXB2 production. Urinary 11-dehydro-TXB2 and 2,3-dinor-TXB2 were measured before, during and up to 24 h after the infusions and in aspirin-free periods, by means of NICI-GC/MS-validated radioimmunoassays. Aspirin treatment suppressed urinary 11-dehydro-TXB2 by 91%. The fractional elimination of 11-dehydro-TXB2 was independent of the rate of TXB2 infusion and averaged 6.8 +/- 0.7%, as compared to 6.4 +/- 0.9% for 2,3-dinor-TXB2. Interpolation of 11-dehydro-TXB2 values obtained in aspirin-free periods onto the linear relationship between the quantities of infused TXB2 and the amount of metabolite excreted in excess of control values (y = 0.0058x, r = 0.94, P less than 0.001) permitted calculation of the mean rate of entry of endogenous TXB2 into the circulation as 0.12 ng.kg-1.min-1. We conclude that: (a) urinary 11-dehydro-TXB2 is at least as abundant a conversion product of exogenously infused TXB2 as 2,3-dinor-TXB2; (b) its excretion increases linearly as a function of the rate of entry of TXB2 into the circulation up to approx. 40-fold the calculated rate of secretion of endogenous TXB2; (c) the latter is consistent with previous estimates based on monitoring of the beta-oxidation pathway of TXB2 metabolism.  相似文献

One-electron oxidation of six different c-type lysozymes from hen egg white, turkey egg white, human milk, horse milk, camel stomach and tortoise was studied by gamma- and pulse-radiolysis. In the first step, one tryptophan side chain is oxidized to indolyl free radical, which is produced quantitatively. As shown already, the indolyl radical subsequently oxidizes a tyrosine side chain to the phenoxy radical in an intramolecular reaction. However this reaction is not total and its stoichiometry depends on the protein. Rate constants also vary between proteins, from 120 x s(-1) to 1000 x s(-1) at pH 7.0 and room temperature [extremes are hen and turkey egg white (120 x s(-1)) and human milk (1000 x s(-1))]. In hen and turkey egg white lysozymes we show that another reactive site is the Asn103-Gly104 peptidic bond, which gets broken radiolytically. Tryptic digestion followed by HPLC separation and identification of the peptides was performed for nonirradiated and irradiated hen lysozyme. Fluorescence spectra of the peptides indicate that Trp108 and/or 111 remain oxidized and that Tyr20 and 53 give bityrosine. Tyr23 appears not to be involved in the process. Thus new features of long-range intramolecular electron transfer in proteins appear: it is only partial and other groups are involved which are silent in pulse radiolysis.  相似文献

Species of the genus Brachycephalus, have a snout‐vent length of less than 18 mm and are believed to have evolved through miniaturization. Brachycephalus ephippium, is particularly interesting; because its entire skull is hyperossified, and the presacral vertebrae and transverse processes are covered by a dorsal shield. We demonstrate in this paper that, at the macroscopic level, a completely hyperossified skull and dorsal shield occur only in B. ephippium, but not in B. ferruginus, B. izechsohni, B. pernix, B. pombali, B. brunneus, B. didactylus, and B. hermogenesi. An intermediate condition, in which the skull is hyperossified but a dorsal shield is absent, occurs in B. vertebralis, B. nodoterga, B. pitanga, and B. alipioi. The microscopic structure of hyperossification was examined in skulls of B. ephippium and B. pitanga, revealing a complex organization involving the presence of Sharpey fibers, which in humans are characteristic of periodontal connections. The vitamin B(6) derivatives 4-pyridoxic acid (anionic) and the Schiff base N,N'-ethylenebis(pyridoxylideneiminato) react with UO(2)(NO(3))(2) * 6H(2)O to give [UO(2)(beta-pyracinide)(2)(H(2)O)] (beta-pyracin=4-pyridoxic acid) and [UO(2)(Pyr(2)en)DMSO]Cl(2)(Pyr(2)en=N,N'-ethylenebis(pyridoxylideneiminato); DMSO=dimethyl sulfoxide). In both compounds the two uranyl oxo ligands set the axis of distorted pentagonal bipyramides. The ability of vitamin B(6) derivatives to react with UO(2)(2+) allowing the chelation of one uranium atom represents a very specific model of assimilation of uranium by living beings. It could also explain the serious damages caused by heavy or radioactive metals like uranium since their complexation "in vivo" by enzymatic systems like pyridoxal phosphate-containing enzymes would lead to a modification of the prosthetic groups of the metalloenzymes with loss of their catalytic activities.  相似文献

Heterochrony, a difference in developmental timing, is a central concept in modern evolutionary biology. An example is pedomorphosis, retention of juvenile characteristics in sexually mature adults, a phenomenon largely represented in salamanders. The mudpuppy (Necturus maculosus) is an obligate pedomorphic amphibian, never undergoing metamorphosis. Thyroid hormone induces tissue transformation in metamorphosing species and this action is mediated by nuclear thyroid hormone (TH) receptors (TRs). The absence of metamorphosis in Necturus has been attributed to a resistance to TH action as treatment with exogenous TH fails to induce transformation. The failure to metamorphose could be due to the lack of TR expression in target tissues, or to a loss of TR function. Toward understanding the molecular basis for the failure of Necturus tissues to respond to TH, and the ultimate cause for the expression of the obligate pedomorphic life history, we characterized the structure, function, and expression of TR genes in Necturus. Strikingly, we found that Necturus TRalpha and TRbeta genes encode fully functional TR proteins. These TRs bind both DNA and TH and can transactivate target genes in response to TH. Both TRalpha and TRbeta are expressed in various tissues. TH treatment in vivo induced expression in the gill of some but not all genes known to be activated by TH in anuran larvae, caused whole organism metabolic effects, but induced no external morphological changes in adults or larvae. Thus, Necturus possesses fully functional TRs and its tissues are not generally resistant to the actions of TH. Rather, the absence of metamorphosis may be due to the loss of TH-dependent control of key genes required for tissue transformation.  相似文献

Effect of the physical properties of acrylic resin of overnight immersion in sodium hypochlorite solution Objectives: This study evaluated colour stability, surface roughness and flexural strength of microwave‐polymerised acrylic resin after overnight immersion in sodium hypochlorite, simulating 180 days use. Materials and methods: Forty disc‐shaped (15 mm × 4 mm) and 40 rectangular specimens (65 mm × 10 mm × 3 mm) were prepared from microwave‐polymerised acrylic resin. The specimens were immersed in 0.5, 1% sodium hypochlorite, Clorox/Calgon and distilled water. Colour measurements (ΔE) were determined by a portable colorimeter. A surface analyser was used to measure roughness (μm). The flexural strength (MPa) was measured using a three‐point bending test in a universal testing machine. Data were evaluated by one‐way anova , followed by Student–Newman–Keuls test (α = 0.05). Results: Statistical analysis found significantly higher colour changes (SNK, p < 0.001) for the 1% sodium hypochlorite, but mean ΔE value quantified by National Bureau of Standards was classified as slight. When comparing the surface roughness, no statistical significance was found among the solutions (anova , p = 0.637). The 1% sodium hypochlorite presented significantly lower flexural strength compared with the control group (SNK, p = 0.034). Conclusion: It was concluded that immersion in 1% sodium hypochlorite solutions for 8 h does influence the colour stability and flexural strength of microwave‐polymerised acrylic resin, during the simulated period of 180 days.  相似文献
