We examined annual variation in the timing of conception andparturition in the African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) and thesynchrony of birth timing with resource cues, using 8 yearsof monthly birth, rainfall, and vegetation data, measured asNormalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). Monthly birthshad the strongest significant correlations with NDVI and rainfalllevels 12 and 13 months in the past, respectively. In addition,the synchrony of current year births corresponds most stronglyto the synchrony of the previous year's NDVI distribution. Becausethe gestation period of buffalo has been estimated to be around11 months, these findings suggest that improved protein levels,occurring approximately a month after the first green flushof the wet season, are either a trigger for conception or conceptionhas evolved to be synchronous with correlated environmentalcues that ensure females enter a period of peak body conditionaround the time of conception and/or parturition. With a gestationperiod of approximately 340 days, parturition occurs to takeadvantage of the period when forage has its highest proteincontent. A comparative analysis of gestation periods withinthe subfamily Bovinae indicates that African buffalo have aprotracted gestation for their body size, which we suggest isan adaptation to their seasonal environment. We also found thatinterannual variation in the birth distribution suggests a degreeof plasticity in the date of conception, and variation in thenumber of calves born each year suggest further synchrony ata timescale longer than a single year. 相似文献

The presence of selected dehydrogenases, including alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH-YL) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH-YL), in Yarrowia lipolytica JMY 861, and their potential role in flavor synthesis were investigated. The experimental findings showed that using reduced form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) as cofactor, the ADH-YL activity in vitro was 6-fold higher than that with reduced form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH); however, under the experimental conditions used in this study, an ALDH-YL activity was not detected. The in situ hexanal reduction reaction was found to be instantaneous; however, when the yeast cells suspension was diluted 150 times, the initial relative hexanal concentration was increased by 84.1%. The chromatographic analyses indicated the conversion, in situ, of linoleic acid hydroperoxides (HPODs) into volatile C6-compounds after 60 min of HPODs addition to the yeast cells suspension. 相似文献

Among the several killing mechanisms displayed by human neutrophils, the oxidative system is the most efficient. We have studied the influence of various antibiotics on the generation of superoxide by isolated human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL) stimulated by phorbol-myristate acetate. Among the antibiotics tested, only coumermycin significantly inhibited superoxide generation; this effect was dose-related, it depended on extracellular calcium concentration and was potentiated by sub-inhibitory concentrations of calcium channel-blocking agents. Coumermycin inhibited the influx of calcium produced by the ionophore A23187 as well as directed chemotaxis in agar and the intracellular killing of a highly susceptible strain of S. aureus. These inhibitory effects required at least 15 min of preincubation of the PMNL. Coumermycin, at clinically achievable serum concentrations, significantly impaired several PMNL functions. The mechanism could be a specific or a non-specific interaction with calcium-channels. 相似文献

Surfactants play a key role in the biotechnological degradation of hydrophobic substrates, however this role is often misunderstood. During the biotransformation of methyl ricinoleate into the aroma compound γ-decalactone by the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica, a direct contact occurs between the surface of the cells and the small droplets of substrate. The impact of a series of surfactants on this process was investigated. Both ionic surfactants tested were toxic towards the yeast. This effect may be linked to a decrease in the cell membrane integrity. The interfacial area of the emulsion varied according to the non-ionic surfactant used, and this factor was correlated with the productivity of the biotransformation. By evaluating the effect of surfactants on the capacity of the cells to adhere to decane (MATH test), it was shown that the adhesion of methyl ricinoleate on yeast surface is not a rate-limiting point for the process. 相似文献

Platelets of reserpinized rabbits, incubated in buffer containing tritiated 5-hydroxytryptamine (3H-5HT), have the ability to convert 3H-5HT into labelled compound (s) extractable with alkaline-chloroform. The bulk of the chloroform-extractable radioactivity showed a Rf value similar to authentic melatonin on silicagel thin-layer chromatography.The labelled product eluted with ethanol from the silicagel area where melatonin was suspected to reside was indentified as melatonin by mass spectrometry and radioimmunoassay.Our in vitro experiments demonstrate that rabbit platelets are capable of converting 5-HT into melatonin apparently because they possess the enzymatic equipment necessary for this biosynthesis i.e. serotonin N-acetyltransferase and hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase. 相似文献

Toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems play key roles in bacterial persistence, biofilm formation and stress responses. The MazF toxin from the Escherichia coli
mazEF TA system is a sequence- and single-strand-specific endoribonuclease, and many studies have led to the proposal that MazF family members exclusively target mRNA. However, recent data indicate some MazF toxins can cleave specific sites within rRNA in concert with mRNA. In this report, we identified the repertoire of RNAs cleaved by Mycobacterium tuberculosis toxin MazF-mt9 using an RNA-seq-based approach. This analysis revealed that two tRNAs were the principal targets of MazF-mt9, and each was cleaved at a single site in either the tRNAPro14 D-loop or within the tRNALys43 anticodon. This highly selective target discrimination occurs through recognition of not only sequence but also structural determinants. Thus, MazF-mt9 represents the only MazF family member known to target tRNA and to require RNA structure for recognition and cleavage. Interestingly, the tRNase activity of MazF-mt9 mirrors basic features of eukaryotic tRNases that also generate stable tRNA-derived fragments that can inhibit translation in response to stress. Our data also suggest a role for tRNA distinct from its canonical adapter function in translation, as cleavage of tRNAs by MazF-mt9 downregulates bacterial growth. 相似文献

In vertebrates, only few experiments have been performed in microgravity to study the embryonic development from fertilization. To date, these concern only amphibian and fish. We report here a study on the embryonic development of Pleurodeles waltl (urodele amphibian) eggs oviposited in microgravity. The experiment was performed twice on board the Mir space station and the data obtained included video recording and morphological, histological and immunocytological analyses. The data confirm that the microgravity conditions have effects during the embryonic period, particularly during cleavage and neurulation, inducing irregular segmentation and abnormal closure of the neural tube. Moreover, we observed several abnormalities hither to undescribed corresponding to cortical cytoplasm movements, a decrease of cell adhesion and a loss of cells. These abnormalities were temporary and subsequently reversible. The young larvae that hatched during the flight displayed normal morphology and swimming behavior after landing. The results obtained in the urodele Pleurodeles waltl are in accordance with those observed earlier in the anuran Xenopus laevis and in the fish Oryzias latipes. 相似文献
