Endothelin-induced activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases in glomerular mesangial cells from normotensive and stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats

1. Kinase assay in myelin basic protein (MBP) containing polyacrylamide gels revealed that endothelin-1 (ET-1) and ET-3 increased MBP kinase activities in glomerular mesangial cells (MC) from Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats and spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHRSP). ET-1 stimulated MBP kinase activities more potently than ET-3. 2. Immunoprecipitation with anti-41-kDa MAPK antiserum showed that the MBP kinases activated by ET-1 correspond to 43- and 41-kDa MAPK. 3. Since Phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate, a direct activator of protein kinase C, also activated MAPK, protein kinase C was suggested to mediate ET-induced activation of MAPK. 4. These results suggest that MAPK may mediate the ET actions in glomerular mesangial cells from normotensive rats as well as spontaneously hypertensive rats. Since ET is produced by vascular endothelial cells of the kidney and glomerular mesangial cells, the ET signalling pathway may have some physiological and pathophysiological significance in vivo glomerulus.     

Pipelined delay-sum architecture based on bucket-brigade devices for on-chip ultrasound beamforming

A pipelined delay-sum architecture based on bucket-brigade devices is proposed as an analog beamformer for integrated far-field steering scanning of a micromachined piezoelectric ultrasonic sensor phased array. The prototype beamformer, fabricated with an 8-/spl mu/m standard CMOS process, exhibits a total harmonic distortion of -45 dB, dynamic range of more than 65 dB, and beamforming imperfection of less than -50 dB using a 100-kHz input signal with peak voltage of 400 mV.     

Increased plasma levels of substance P and disturbed water excretion in patients with liver cirrhosis

We describe a surgical technique for replacing the hip joint capsule using synthetic mesh after oncological resections of the proximal femur that resulted in gross intraoperative instability of the prosthetic reconstruction. The results of its use in 13 patients, 6 of whom also had pelvic resections, are described. These patients were selected from a total group of 88 patients undergoing proximal femoral replacement, 75 of whom did not require capsular replacement (none of these 75 patients have experienced dislocation). In the group requiring capsular reconstruction, 1 of 4 patients with bipolar hemiarthroplasty and 4 of 9 patients with total hip replacements experienced dislocation after operation. Of the dislocated total hip replacements, 1 remains chronically dislocated, and 3 were successfully stabilized by open reduction with further capsular augmentation. Given that the resections involved removal of most of the soft tissues stabilizing the hip joint, we believe that the technique of capsular reconstruction is useful in this difficult group of patients.     

Establishment of spontaneously immortalized rat type 1 astroglial cell lines: the role of p53 in astroglial carcinogenesis

This paper discusses several data analytic technique, for examining treatment efficacy in pretest-posttest control group designs. The following approaches are described: ANOVA on post scores, ANOVA on difference scores, split-plot repeated measures ANOVA, profile analysis, and ANOCOVA with prescore as the co-variate. Guidelines for choosing between available techniques are provided; the primary focus here is on the nature of the null hypothesis, the assumptions underlying the approach, and the power of the procedure. The importance of examining the characteristics of the data set in selecting an analytic technique is illustrated.     

Primary fibrosarcoma of the skull

The case of a 61-year-old woman with fibrosarcoma of the skull is discussed. Despite surgical treatment and irradiation, she died 23 months after diagnosis. Primary fibrosarcoma of the skull is rare but must be considered in the differentiation of the osteolytic lesions of the skull.     

Identification of factors that accelerate hydrogen production by Clostridium butyricum RAK25832 using casamino acids as a nitrogen source

The ability of Clostridium butyricum RAK25832 to use casamino acids as a nitrogen source was investigated. Strain RAK25832 showed the capacity to utilize different types of carbon sources. With glucose as a carbon source (10 g/L), the preferred final concentration of casamino acids was 26.67 g/L, with a cumulative hydrogen production, production rate, and yield of 2505 mL H₂/L, 160 mL/h, and 1.81 mol H₂/mol glucose, respectively. Eighteen metal elements were screened to identify the most important metals for biohydrogen production, and four elements were optimized. The optimal medium composition was MgCl₂·6H₂O (0.1 g/L), K₂HPO₄·3H₂O (6.67 g/L), NaHCO₃ (2.6 g/L), and FeCl₂·4H₂O (0.002 g/L). Vitamin supplementation of the medium showed no significant effect on hydrogen production. Under the optimized conditions, cumulative hydrogen production reached 3074 mL H₂/L. This is the first study to demonstrate the use of casamino acids as a nitrogen source by C. butyricum.     

Designing and experimentally demonstrating automatic OPS/OCS/OpenFlow network control driven by ChoiceNet provider

Interconnection between our existing optical packet and circuit integrated network (OPCInet) and an ecosystem for network service provisioning named ChoiceNet enables network service providers to provide diverse services and realize control driven by the providers. In this paper, we design and implement control interfaces for the interconnection, which enables each ChoiceNet provider to explicitly control both OPCInet- and OpenFlow-based networks by use of a single common interface with proprietary/easily modifiable message formats for all control functions. We construct an experimental setup between the USA and Japan, and demonstrate that the OPCInet and an OpenFlow-based network placed in Japan are successfully controlled by request from the ChoiceNet provider installed in the USA. We also show that the time required to complete Telnet access to the OPCInet C-plane for each control is no more than 150 ms over the long distance from the USA to Japan.     

Asymmetric Synthesis of 2‐Substituted Dihydrobenzofurans and 3‐Hydroxydihydrobenzopyrans through the Enantioselective Epoxidation of O‐Silyl‐Protected ortho‐Allylphenols

The Shi‐type epoxidation of O‐tert‐butyldiphenylsilyl (TBDPS) protected o‐allylphenols serves as an efficient strategy to construct the dihydrobenzofurans and dihydrobenzopyrans in up to 97% ee. This methodology led to the enantioselective synthesis of (+)‐marmesin, (−)‐(3′R)‐decursinol, and (+)‐lomatin.
