Crash prediction models are used for a variety of purposes including forecasting the expected future performance of various transportation system segments with similar traits. The influence of intersection features on safety have been examined extensively because intersections experience a relatively large proportion of motor vehicle conflicts and crashes compared to other segments in the transportation system.

The effects of left-turn lanes at intersections in particular have seen mixed results in the literature. Some researchers have found that left-turn lanes are beneficial to safety while others have reported detrimental effects on safety. This inconsistency is not surprising given that the installation of left-turn lanes is often endogenous, that is, influenced by crash counts and/or traffic volumes. Endogeneity creates problems in econometric and statistical models and is likely to account for the inconsistencies reported in the literature.

This paper reports on a limited-information maximum likelihood (LIML) estimation approach to compensate for endogeneity between left-turn lane presence and angle crashes. The effects of endogeneity are mitigated using the approach, revealing the unbiased effect of left-turn lanes on crash frequency for a dataset of Georgia intersections. The research shows that without accounting for endogeneity, left-turn lanes ‘appear’ to contribute to crashes; however, when endogeneity is accounted for in the model, left-turn lanes reduce angle crash frequencies as expected by engineering judgment. Other endogenous variables may lurk in crash models as well, suggesting that the method may be used to correct simultaneity problems with other variables and in other transportation modeling contexts.  相似文献

Photoacoustic imaging is a noninvasive biomedical imaging modality for visualizing the internal structure and function of soft tissues. Conventionally, an image proportional to the absorbed optical energy is reconstructed from measurements of light-induced acoustic emissions. We describe a simple iterative algorithm to recover the distribution of optical absorption coefficients from the image of the absorbed optical energy. The algorithm, which incorporates a diffusion-based finite-element model of light transport, converges quickly onto an accurate estimate of the distribution of absolute absorption coefficients. Two-dimensional examples with physiologically realistic optical properties are shown. The ability to recover optical properties (which directly reflect tissue physiology) could enhance photoacoustic imaging techniques, particularly methods based on spectroscopic analysis of chromophores.  相似文献

We investigate experimentally the influence of the grating reflectivity, grating resolution, and diode facet antireflection (AR) coating on the intrinsic linewidth of an external-cavity diode laser built with a diffraction grating in a Littrow configuration. Grating lasers at 399, 780, and 852 nm are determined to have typical linewidths between 250 and 600 kHz from measurements of their frequency noise power spectral densities. The linewidths are little affected by the presence of an AR coating on the diode facet but narrow as the grating reflectivity and grating resolution are increased, with the resolution exerting a greater effect. We also use frequency noise measurements to characterize a laser mount with improved mechanical stability.  相似文献

Sensor technology is one of the most important key technologies of the future with a constantly increasing number of applications, both in the industrial and in the private sectors. More and more gas sensors are used for the control of technical processes, in environment monitoring, healthcare, and automobiles. Consequently, the development of fast and sensitive gas sensors with small cross sensitivity is the subject of intense research, propelled by strategies based on nanoscience and -technology. Established systems can be improved and novel sensor concepts based on bottom-up approaches show that the sensor properties can be controlled by molecular design. OBJECTIVE: To identify ladder-related fracture injuries and determine how ladder fall fractures differ from other ladder-related injuries. METHODS: Ladder-related fracture cases were identified using narrative text and coded data from workers' compensation claims. Potential cases were identified by text searches and verified with claim records. Injury characteristics were compared using proportionate injury ratios. RESULTS: Of 9826 ladder-related injuries, 7% resulted in fracture cases. Falls caused 89% of fractures and resulted in more medical costs and disability days than other injuries. Frequent mechanisms were ladder instability (22%) and lost footing (22%). Narrative text searches identified 17% more fractures than injury codes alone. Males were more likely to sustain a fall fracture than other injuries; construction workers were most likely, and retail workers were the least likely to sustain fractures. CONCLUSIONS: Fractures are an important injury from ladder falls, resulting more serious consequences than other ladder-related injuries. Text analysis can improve the quality and utility of workers compensation data by identifying and understanding injury causes. Proportionate injury ratios are also useful for making cross-group comparisons of injury experience when denominator data are not available. Greater attention to risk factors for ladder falls is needed for targeting interventions.  相似文献

The marine environment is distinguished by unique groups of organisms being the source of a wide array of fascinating structures. The enormous biodiversity of marine habitats is mirrored by the molecular diversity of secondary metabolites found in marine animals, plants and microbes. The recognition that many marine invertebrates contain endo- and epibiotic microorganisms and that some invertebrate-derived natural products are structurally related to bacterial metabolites suggests a microbial origin for some of these compounds. Other marine natural products, however, are clearly located in invertebrate tissue and microbial involvement in the biosynthetic process seems unlikely. The complexity of associations in marine organisms, especially in sponges, bryozoans and tunicates, makes it extremely difficult to definitively state the biosynthetic source of many marine natural products or to deduce their ecological significance. Whereas many symbiotic marine microorganisms cannot be isolated and cultured, numerous epi- and endobiotic marine fungi produce novel secondary metabolites in laboratory cultures. The potent biological activity of many marine natural products is of relevance for their ecological function but is also the basis of their biomedical importance.  相似文献

The kinetics of annexin A1 binding to solid-supported lipid bilayers consisting of 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC)/1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoserine (POPS; 4:1) has been investigated as a function of the calcium ion concentration in the bulk phase. Quartz crystal microbalance measurements in conjunction with scanning force microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, and computer simulations indicate that at a given Ca2+ concentration annexin A1 adsorbs irreversibly on membrane domains enriched in POPS. By contrast, annexin A1 adsorbs reversibly on the POPC-enriched phase, which is composed of single POPS molecules embedded within a POPC matrix. The overall area occupied by the POPS-enriched phase is controlled by the CaCl2 concentration. Monte Carlo simulations suggest that the area of the POPS-enriched phase increases by a factor of 7 when the Ca2+ concentration is changed from 0.01 to 1 mM.  相似文献

The DNA-binding preferences of two oligopeptide amides, (His-Pro-Arg-Lys)(3)NH(2) (HR-12) and (Ser-Pro-Arg-Lys)(3)NH(2) (SP-12), have been examined by quantitative DNase I footprinting studies. Two different DNA fragments were investigated: a pair of 5'-(32)P-labeled duplexes from pBR322 with one or other of the complementary strands labeled and a corresponding pair of 5'-(32)P-labeled duplexes representing fragments of the latent membrane protein (LMP-1) gene from a pathogenic Epstein-Barr virus variant derived from nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The major objective was to examine molecular recognition and cooperative features associated with sequence-selective binding of synthetic peptides to the LMP-1 fragments. At various binding sites on the pBR322 fragments, Hill coefficients (n(H)) ranging from 1.9-2.2 were observed; these results indicate modest positive cooperativity between binding sites for both peptides. By contrast, unusually high values of n(H), ranging from 4.0-9.3, were observed at various binding sites on the LMP-1 fragments. Allosteric models can be constructed to interpret the observed cooperative interactions between different DNA recognition sites in the LMP-1 gene upon binding of the peptide ligands. It is noteworthy that these models feature a novel network of cooperativity interconnecting multiple DNA allosteric sites. The evidence of sequence selectivity and strong cooperativity discovered in this work may prove to be a general feature of peptide interactions with some nucleic acids.  相似文献

Epitaxial and (110) oriented paraelectric thin films of Ba0.60Sro.40TiO3 were grown on (100) oriented NdGaO3 orthorhombic substrates, and the nonlinear dielectric properties were studied at 10 GHz along selected in-plane crystallographic directions in the film thickness range of 25-1200 nm. The measured dielectric properties show strong residual strain and in-plane directional dependence. For instance, the in-plane relative permittivity is found to vary from as much as 500 to 150 along [110] and [001], respectively, in the 600 nm film. Tunability was found to vary from as much as 54% to 20% in all films and directions. In a given film, the best tunability is observed along the compressed axis in a mixed strain state, 54% along [110] in the 600 nm film. It is shown that, by nanoscale manipulation of epitaxy and planar anisotropy, the return loss and phase shift in a paraelectric can be tuned over a rather wide range. The approach presented herein opens avenues for obtaining various degrees of phase shift on the same film, enabling one with an additional degree of freedom in device design and fabrication as well as multifunctionality.  相似文献
