BACKGROUND & AIMS: Hepatobiliary complications occur in inflammatory bowel disease and may be caused by the translocation of intestinal toxins from portal blood into bile through leaky hepatocyte tight junctions. The role of tight junctions in the pathogenesis of hepatobiliary complications in experimental inflammatory bowel disease was investigated. METHODS: Colitis was induced in rats by intracolonic instillation of trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid. The function of hepatocellular tight junctions was evaluated in perfused livers by measuring early (paracellular) horseradish peroxidase excretion into the bile and by electron microscopy and semiquantitative analysis of lanthanum penetration through the tight junction and into bile canaliculi. Immunofluorescent localization of cingulin and ZO-1 was used to study the structure of hepatocyte junctions. RESULTS: Colitis was associated with increased serum bilirubin and bile acid concentrations, a 2.5-fold increase in paracellular biliary excretion of horseradish peroxidase, and a ninefold increase in lanthanum permeability. Liver histology and cingulin and ZO-1 localizations were similar to normal liver. CONCLUSIONS: Experimental colitis is associated with hepatobiliary complications and an increased hepatocyte tight junctional permeability to horseradish peroxidase and lanthanum. Subtle alterations in tight junction function may be involved in the pathogenesis of hepatobiliary injuries in inflammatory bowel disease.  相似文献

College students read chapters from a novel written by Alan Lightman (Einstein's Dreams) and later provided verification judgments on the truth/falsity of test statements. Each chapter described a different fictional village that incorporated assumptions about time that deviate from our normal TIME schema, e.g., citizens knowing exactly when the world will end, time flowing backward instead of forward. These novel assumptions about time provided interesting insights about life and reality. In two experiments, we examined whether readers could accurately incorporate these novel assumptions about time in the fictional story worlds, as manifested in the verification judgments for statements after story comprehension. The test statements included verbatim typical, verbatim atypical, inference typical, and inference atypical information from the perspective of mundane reality that meshes with a normal TIME schema. Verification ratings were collected on a 6-point scale in Experiment 1, whereas Experiment 2 used a signal-response technique in which binary true/false decisions were extracted at-.5, 1.5, 3.5, 5.5, and 10.0 s. The college students were measured on literary expertise, reading skill, working memory span, and reading time. Readers with comparatively high literary expertise showed truth discrimination scores that were compatible with a schema copy plus tag model, which assumes that readers are good at detecting and remembering atypical verbatim information; this model predicts better (and faster) truth discrimination for verbatim atypical statements than for verbatim typical statements. In contrast, fast readers with comparatively low literary expertise were compatible with a filtering model; this model predicts that readers gloss over (or suppress) atypical verbatim information and show advantages for verbatim typical information. All groups of readers had trouble inferentially propagating the novel assumptions about time in a fictional story world, but the slower readers were more accurate in their verification of the atypical inferences. A construction-integration model could explain the interactions among literary expertise, reading time, and the typicality of test statements.  相似文献

This work assessed the risk of protozoa in 10 school restaurants in Armenia (Quindío, Colombia) by analyzing the presence of Cryptosporidium spp, Giardia duodenalis, Blastocystis, and Cyclospora cayetanensis DNA in the food, water, and living and inert surfaces of school restaurants and in stools of children who ate at these restaurants. Of the 213 food, water, and surface samples, 6.6% were positive using PCR to test DNA for Blastocystis; 3.8% for Cryptosporidium spp; 0.9% for G. duodenalis; and 0% for C. cayetanensis. In 187 stool samples analyzed via microscopy from children who attended the restaurants, 40 (21.4%) were positive for Blastocystis and 21 (11.2%) were positive for Giardia spp. Via PCR, 20 (10.7%) were positive for Cryptosporidium and 0 (0%) for C. cayetanensis. A higher positivity in children's stools for Blastocystis spp was correlated with lower compliance in property conditions and for higher positivity of Giardia spp in children's stool was related to lower knowledge by food manipulators. Inspection scores can identify restaurants with higher risk for protozoa infection.  相似文献

Thermochemical conversion by gasification process is one of the most relevant technologies for energy recovery from solid fuel, with an energy conversion efficiency better than other alternatives like combustion and pyrolysis. Nevertheless, the most common technology used in the last decades for thermochemical conversion of solid fuel through gasification process, such as coal, agriculture residues or biomass residues are the fluidized bed or bubbling fluidized bed system. For these gasification technologies, an inert bed material is fed into reactor to improve the homogenization of the particles mixture and increase the heat transfer between solid fuel particles and the bed material. The fluidized bed reactors usually operate at isothermal bed temperatures in the range of 700–1000 °C, providing a suitable contact between solid and gas phases. In this way, chemical reactions with high conversion yield, as well as an intense circulation and mixing of the solid particles are encouraged. Moreover, a high gasification temperature favours carbon conversion efficiency, increasing the syngas production and energy performance of the gasifier. However, the risk of eutectic mixtures formation and its subsequent melting process are increased, and hence the probability of bed agglomeration and the system collapse could be increased, mainly when alkali and alkaline earth metals-rich biomasses are considered. Generally, bed agglomeration occurs when biomass-derived ash reacts with bed material, and the lower melting temperature of ash components promotes the formation of highly viscous layers, which encourages the progressive agglomerates creation, and consequently, the bed collapse and system de-fluidization. Taking into account the relevance of this topic to ensure the normal gasification process operating, this paper provides several aspects about bed agglomeration, mostly for biomass gasification systems. In this way, chemistry and mechanism of bed agglomeration, as well as, some methods for in-situ detection and prediction of the bed agglomeration phenomenon are reviewed and discussed.  相似文献

Gasification of oil sludge (OS) from crude oil refinery and biomass was investigated to evaluate hydrogen production and its potential use in diesel oil hydrodesulphurization process. Gasification process was studied by Aspen Hysys® tools, considering different kinetic model for main OS compounds. Air and superheated steam mixtures as gasifying agents were simulated. Gasification parameters like: temperature, syngas chemical composition and gas yield were evaluated. Results showed OS thermal conversion needs a working temperature above 1300 °C to ensure a high conversion (>90%) of OS compounds. Thermal energy requirement for gasification was estimated between 0.80 and 1.25 kWh/kg OS, considering equivalence air (ER) and steam/oil sludge (SOS) ratio between 0.25-0.37 and 0.2–1.5 kg steam/kg OS, respectively. The gas yield was 2.28 Nm3/kg OS, with a H2 content close to 25 mol%, for a H2 potential production about 1.84 Nm3 H2/kg OS; nevertheless, when OS and biomass mixtures are used, hydrogen production increases to 3.51 Nm3 H2/kg OS, meaning 37% of H2 (from natural gas) required for diesel oil hydrodesulphurization could be replaced, becoming an added value technological alternative for OS waste conversion as a source of H2, inducing a considerable reduction of greenhouse gases and non-renewables resources.  相似文献

A comprehensive performance study and comparison of several adaptive statistical process control procedures is presented. These adaptive control chart procedures are modifications to standard Shewhart control charts that include changing the sampling interval, the sample size or both according to rules based on the value of the sample statistic. Adaptive control techniques are known to improve the performance of the standard Shewhart control charts. In this paper we develop a four-state adaptive sample size control chart and several variations of a three-state combined adaptive sample size and sampling interval control chart. We then compare these new schemes with the previously developed schemes, the two-state adaptive sampling interval, the two-state adaptive sample size and two-state combined adaptive sample size and sampling interval control chart, three-state adaptive sample size control chart and non-adaptive Shewhart control charts. These results show that the addition of the third and fourth states on the adaptive control chart schemes improve the control chart performance; however, the improvement is relatively modest.  相似文献

Fecal indicator microbes, such as enterococci, are often used to assess potential health risks caused by pathogens at recreational beaches. Microbe levels often vary based on collection time and sampling location. The primary goal of this study was to assess how spatial and temporal variations in sample collection, which are driven by environmental parameters, impact enterococci measurements and beach management decisions. A secondary goal was to assess whether enterococci levels can be predictive of the presence of Staphylococcus aureus, a skin pathogen. Over a ten-day period, hydrometeorologic data, hydrodynamic data, bather densities, enterococci levels, and S. aureus levels including methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) were measured in both water and sand. Samples were collected hourly for both water and sediment at knee-depth, and every 6 h for water at waist-depth, supratidal sand, intertidal sand, and waterline sand. Results showed that solar radiation, tides, and rainfall events were major environmental factors that impacted enterococci levels. S. aureus levels were associated with bathing load, but did not correlate with enterococci levels or any other measured parameters. The results imply that frequencies of advisories depend heavily upon sample collection policies due to spatial and temporal variation of enterococci levels in response to environmental parameters. Thus, sampling at different times of the day and at different depths can significantly impact beach management decisions. Additionally, the lack of correlation between S. aureus and enterococci suggests that use of fecal indicators may not accurately assess risk for some pathogens.  相似文献

The article presents preliminary work carried out to prepare and evaluate the blends obtained from an unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) compound, formulated with several amounts of TiO2 and an organosolv lignin. A series of blends in which lignin replaced partially or totally the TiO2 were made on a laboratory scale. The influence of lignin on the melt processing of the blends and on their stress-strain properties was studied. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed to examine the contribution of lignin to the properties of these blends. The possibility of a proton donor/proton acceptor interaction between lignin and PVC chains is discussed. This can arise due to the interaction between the carbonyl group of lignin and α hydrogen of PVC or between hydroxyl groups of lignin and chlorine of PVC. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

This study aimed at understanding users’ demand for raw and boiled plantains in rural and urban areas in West and Littoral regions of Cameroon. Surveys conducted in eight rural localities consisted of key informant interviews, gender-disaggregated focus group discussions, market and individual interviews. Processing and cooking diagnoses were done with restaurant cooks in urban areas, to know the details of plantain processing and boiling and to understand the quality characteristics of raw plantain that give a most-liked boiled plantain. Local favourite landraces, most cultivated landraces in Cameroon (Batard and Big ebanga) and a new CARBAP/CIRAD hybrid (CARBAP K74) were used. The preference for plantain cultivars was both gender and region-dependent. High-quality plantain should be mature, with big fingers and having a dark green peel colour. The fruit length and girth, pulp pH, dry matter content and firmness were found to be relevant postharvest quality characteristics for plantain breeding improvement.  相似文献
