Measuring method of three thermophysical parameters of solids by a thermal probe with instantaneous point contact: Discussion about applicability and measuring conditions

An instrument for the measuring method reported in the previous paper is a handy tester for three thermophysical parameters of solids in situ. Discussions about measurement errors caused by not strictly satisfying the measuring conditions, such as size and shape of the testing body, and about optimum initial temperature difference between thermal probe and testing body have been done. As a result of the experiment varying the shape of a probe end, it is shown that the radius of the contacting surface on a testing body has no influence on measuring thermophysical parameters. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Molecular recognitive photocatalytic decomposition on mesoporous silica coated TiO2 particle

Mesoporous silica coated titania exhibited a substrate selective photocatalytic reaction; 4-nonylphenol and phenol were decomposed while nonane was not decomposed by the UV irradiation to their aqueous mixture.     

Stability of hydrogen incorporated in ZnO nanowires by plasma treatment

The stability of hydrogen in ZnO is studied using hydrogenated nanowires by plasma treatment. Enhanced near band edge UV emission and reduced defect level green emission is observed after hydrogen plasma treatment. Through thermal stability tests, this effect is found to be stable at room temperature and nearly stable up to ~500 K, but begins to deteriorate at higher temperature. The study of the irradiation stability of the hydrogen in ZnO nanowires shows that the hydrogen is stable under an electron beam with an accelerating voltage lower than 5 kV, but is not stable under 10 kV or under an intensive laser beam. The results could benefit the further understanding of the role of hydrogen in ZnO and light-emitting devices based on hydrogenated ZnO.     

Photolithographic patterning of organic photodetectors with a non-fluorinated photoresist system

We report on the fabrication of organic photodetectors (OPD) based on isolated islands of P3HT:PCBM. Pattern transfer to the active material was done with photolithography based on non-fluorinated solvents and the excessive organic semiconductor was removed with oxygen plasma reactive ion etching. The photoresist system used was found to be benign to the P3HT:PCBM layer as confirmed by absorption, thickness and roughness measurements. Current–voltage characteristics and external quantum efficiency (EQE) remained unchanged after the patterning process. It was demonstrated that it is possible to photolithographically pattern isolated islands with 200 μm edge length with the same dark current density (<10⁻⁵ A/cm² at −2 V bias voltage) and photocurrent density (>5 × 10⁻³ A/cm² at −2 V). Furthermore, concerning the solar cell performance, the patterned, small-area devices showed power conversion efficiency of 2.1% and fill-factor of 60%. Dark current was observed to depend on the size of the remaining semiconductor island, which was demonstrated on OPDs with diameter of 50 μm. The presented results show the feasibility of fabrication of isolated devices based on organic semiconductors patterned with non-fluorinated photolithography.     

Survey of pesticide residues in imported frozen vegetables and fruits (1989.4~2008.3)

A survey of pesticide residues in 595 imported frozen products on the Tokyo market from April 1989 to March 2008 was carried out. Forty three kinds of pesticides, including organophosphorus, organochlorine, carbamate, pyrethroid and others, were detected between levels of trace (below 0.01 ppm) and 4.6 ppm from 162 samples. Chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin and omethoate were frequently detected in green vegetables (komatsuna leaf and spinach), cypermethrin and methamidophos were detected in pods and seeds (green soybean and string pea), chlorpropham (CIPC) was detected in potato, and captan and carbaryl were detected in berries (blueberry, raspberry and strawberry). The hydrophilic pesticide methamidophos was detected in flesh of lychee. Residue levels of these pesticides were calculated as between less than 0.5% and 30% of their ADI values according to the daily intake of frozen products. Therefore, these frozen products should be safe when they were eaten in customary amounts.     

In situ mRNA hybridization technique for analysis of human telomerase RNA in gastric precancerous and cancerous lesions

Telomerase, the ribonucleoprotein enzyme that elongates telomerase, is repressed in normal somatic cells but is reactivated during tumor progression. The purpose of this study was to investigate the localization of human telomerase RNA (hTR) expression in human gastric precancerous and cancerous lesions by using in situ mRNA hybridization (ISH) with avidin-biotin staining. We also examined telomerase activity in these lesions by using hybridization protection assay connected with a telomeric repeat amplification protocol (TRAP/HPA). Analyzed tissue samples were as follows; 132 cases of chronic atrophic gastritis without intestinal metaplasia, 115 incomplete-type intestinal metaplasias, 40 complete-type intestinal metaplasias, 23 hyperplastic polyps, 23 tubular adenomas and 26 adenocarcinomas. In ISH analysis, high levels of hTR expression were observed preferentially in the nuclei at the single-cell level. hTR-expressing cells in carcinomas and adenomas were significantly more frequent than those of the other lesions (P < 0.001). The expression pattern of hTR in carcinoma and adenoma tissues was heterogeneous and similar intratumor heterogeneity was detected in Ki-67 immunoreactivity. Infiltrating lymphocytes in tissue also exhibited high levels of hTR expression. In TRAP/HPA analysis, carcinomas had significantly more frequent positivity for telomerase activity and a higher level of telomerase activity than the other lesions (P < 0.05). However, the amount of telomerase activity did not parallel the expression level of hTR. Our data suggest that hTR expression increases in the early stages of stomach carcinogenesis and that sufficient synthesis of hTR is a prerequisite for telomerase reactivation in tumorigenesis.     

Novel rotor position extraction based on carrier frequency component method (CFCM) using two reference frames for IPM drives

In this paper a novel interior permanent-magnet (IPM) motor's rotor position extraction method from the carrier-frequency component signal, derived from pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) inverter switching, using two reference frames is presented. This method has been utilized for IPM motor vector control without a mechanical rotor position detector, extracting rotor position angle from the switching carrier-frequency (10 kHz) component current. It is effective for IPM motors, which have magnetic saliency, sinusoidal distributed stator winding, and are supplied by a PWM voltage-source inverter. The performance of two IPM motors' vector control without mechanical rotor position detector utilizing this method has been investigated. Experimental results demonstrating good dynamic and steady-state performance achieved are presented and discussed.     

Interaction of rat lin-10 with brain-enriched F-actin-binding protein, neurabin-II/spinophilin

We have recently isolated a rat homologue of the Caenorrhabditis elegans lin-10 product. Although rat lin-10 is expressed in the cytosol and membrane fractions of various tissues, it is distributed only in the membrane fraction in brain where it is enriched in the synaptic plasma membrane and postsynaptic density fractions. We have isolated here a rat lin-10-interacting protein from rat brain and identified it to be neurabin-II/spinophilin, which has recently been isolated as a protein interacting with protein phosphatase I and F-actin. Neurabin-II/spinophilin is ubiquitously expressed but enriched in brain, especially in the synaptic plasma membrane and postsynaptic density fractions. We discuss the physiological significance of the interaction of rat lin-10 with neurabin-II/spinophilin.
