Grouting of large karstic caverns in dobrogea Coalfield,Bulgaria

The paper describes the results of an experimental grouting programme carried out by the Spetstamponazhgeologia association at the Dobrogea coalfield in Bulgaria. The anticipated water inflow into a shaft at this deposit totals 8 m³/s at a pressure of 12 MPa, from a cavity size equal or exceeding 3 metres. Grouting operations made it possible to cut down water inflow by a factor of more than one thousand. The success of this investigation has enabled the author to design an exprrimental shaft sinking project through the valange formation at Dobrogea mine.     

Polyphenolic composition and in vitro antioxidant activities of native‐ and tannase‐treated green tea extracts

The antioxidant activities of native‐ and tannase‐treated green tea extracts along with their major polyphenol components were investigated. The polyphenolic content and composition of the tea before and after tannase treatment were determined by liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC‐MS). Approximately 99% of the (?)‐epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and (?)‐epicatechin gallate (ECG) in green tea extract were converted by tannase to (?)‐epigallocatechin (EGC) and (?)‐epicatechin (EC), respectively, after 30 min. Biotransformed green tea exhibited a significantly higher DPPH˙ radical scavenging activities than native green tea (EC₅₀ value of 0.024 ± 0.001 and 0.044 ± 0.001 mg mL^?1, respectively). Kinetic parameters such as scavenging rate and stoichiometry were calculated. The rate of DPPH˙ radical scavenging activities for tannase‐treated green tea extract was shown to be higher than native green tea extract.     

Color changes,nitrite content,and rehydration capacity of edible bird's nest by advanced drying method

This article presents the authors’ first attempt to improve quality of edible bird’s nest through continuous and intermittent low-temperature drying (25 and 40°C) with infrared and ultraviolet C (UVC) treatments. The attributes of quality were compared in regard to quality of hot-air-dried samples at 70–90°C. Experimental results showed that a significant improvement in the quality of edible bird’s nest in terms of minimizing color changes and rehydration capacity using intermittent low-temperature drying with infrared and UVC drying profile. However, it was also found that any drying method has less significant effect on the nitrite content of edible bird’s nest.     

Key project management practices affecting Singaporean firms’ project performance in China

Foreign (non-mainland Chinese) architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) firms may face difficulties managing construction projects in China because they are unfamiliar with this new operating environment. This study investigates project management (PM) practices adopted by Singaporean AEC firms in China. It determines the performance level of their projects in China; identifies PM practices that led to better performance; and recommends key PM practices that could be adopted by foreign AEC firms in China to achieve project success. A structured questionnaire was designed and data were collected via a self-administered postal and email survey, targeting Singaporean AEC firms that had undertaken and managed projects in China. The study finds that certain PM practices do indeed affect project performance. The most important of these are practices relating to scope management, such as controlling the quality of the contract document, quality of response to perceived variations and extent of changes to the contract. It is recommended that foreign firms adopt some of the PM practices highlighted in this study to help them achieve better project performance in China.     

A Method of Magnesium Treatment for Producing Gravity-diecast Ductile Iron

Equipment for the in-stream treatment of ductile iron has been adapted for gravity-diecasting. The treatment unit consists of a pouring basin, reaction chamber, and a reservoir for holding treated iron. The device is highly mobile in so much that it can be transferred from furnace to successive dies and back again, allowing consecutive pouring. The authors have studied the effect of reaction chamber design and nodularising-alloy type on the microstructure of cast specimens, using three types of chamber design and three types of nodulariser at different temperatures. The results indicate that a carbide-free structure with a high nodule count of up to 1500 n/mm² within the as-cast structure of a diecast rod specimen of 30 mm dia. can be achieved using this treatment equipment, when employing suitable nodularising alloy and process chamber design.     

Changes in racial identity among African American college students following the election of Barack Obama.

The current study considered the influence of the 2008 presidential election on the racial identity of African American college students (Mage = 19.3 years; 26.3% male). The design of the study consisted of 2 components: longitudinal and daily. The longitudinal component assessed 3 dimensions of racial identity (centrality, private regard, and public regard) 2 weeks before and 5 months after the election, and the daily diary component assessed racial identity and identity exploration on the days immediately before and after the election. Daily items measuring identity exploration focused on how much individuals thought about issues relating to their race. Analyses considered the immediate effects of the election on identity exploration and the extent to which changes in exploration were shaped by racial identity measured prior to the election. We also considered immediate and longer term changes in racial identity following the election and the extent to which longer term changes were conditioned by identity exploration. Findings suggest that the election served as an “encounter” experience (Cross, 1991, 1995, pp. 60–61), which led to increases in identity exploration. Moreover, analyses confirmed that changes in identity exploration were most pronounced among those with higher levels of racial centrality. Results also suggest that the election had both an immediate and a longer term influence on racial identity, which in some instances was conditioned by identity exploration. Housing Equity Withdrawal in Australia: Prevalence,Patterns and Motivations in Mid-to-late Life

In an era of population ageing, the primary home is increasingly viewed as a personal resource that can perform a pension role in retirement. This article assesses the extent to which Australians aged 45 years and over withdraw housing equity through in situ mortgage equity withdrawal (MEW), downsizing and selling up. We find that the incidence of housing equity withdrawal has increased over the last decade despite a global financial crisis. MEW is the dominant form of equity release among those under pension age, while downsizing or selling up is more frequent among those above pension age. Downsizing and selling up are more likely to be prompted by adverse life events than MEW. Selling up is typically an option of last resort. Our findings offer insights into important debates around homeownership societies and the welfare role performed by owner-occupied housing in mid-to-late life.     

Synthesis and Characterization of Some Triphenyltin(IV) Complexes from Sterically Crowded [((E)-1-{2-Hydroxy-5-[(E)-2-(aryl)-1-diazenyl]phenyl}methylidene)amino]acetate Ligands and Crystal Structure Analysis of a Tetrameric Triphenyltin(IV) Compound

Four new triphenyltin(IV) complexes containing [((E)-1-{2-hydroxy-5-[(E)-2-(aryl)-1-diazenyl]phenyl}methylidene)amino]acetate ligands (L) have been synthesized with formulations of Ph₃SnLH. They have been studied by multinuclear (¹H, ¹³C, ¹¹⁹Sn) NMR, ¹¹⁹Sn M?ssbauer and IR spectroscopy. A full characterization of one complex, Ph₃SnL¹H (1), was accomplished by single crystal X-ray crystallography, which revealed the compound to be a macrocyclic tetramer. In the tetramer, the five coordinate tin atoms have distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometries with the three phenyl groups occupying equatorial positions, while an oxygen atom of the carboxylate group of one L ligand and the oxide O-atom (formerly the hydroxy group) of a second L ligand in an apical positions. The carboxylate ligands bridge adjacent tin atoms and coordinate in the zwitterionic form with the phenolic proton moved to the nearby nitrogen atom. ¹¹⁹Sn NMR results indicate that the tetrameric structures of the complexes in the solid state, in which the tin atoms are five-coordinated, dissociate in solution to yield four coordinate monomeric species.     

Synthesis and Characterization of Naphthalene End-Capped Divinylbenzene for OTFT

An organic field-effect transistor was fabricated based on a thin film of 1,4-bis-(2-naphthalen-2-ylvinyl)benzene (BNDV). The organic semiconductor was deposited via thermal evaporation on a chemically modified silicon dioxide surface. The thermal, optical, electronic, and surface properties of the BNDV compound were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) absorption, photoluminescence spectroscopies, cyclic voltammetry, x-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy. The BNDV had good oxidation stability and exhibited a field-effect performance with a mobility of 0.062 cm²/V s, a subthreshold slope of 0.4 V, and an on/off ratio of 2.45 × 10⁵.
