The efficacy of lauric arginate (LAE) on Salmonella survivability in ground chicken containing 9.8% fat was determined under refrigerated storage. The effect of LAE treatments on total aerobes, pH and objective colour were also assessed in ground chicken. LAE was highly effective against Salmonella in 0.1% peptone with no detectable survivors following treatment with 200 ppm and 400 ppm of LAE. No difference existed (P > 0.05) in the growth of Salmonella and total aerobes after treatment with 200 and 400 ppm of LAE in ground chicken inoculated with a four strain mixture of Salmonella. At these concentrations, LAE did not exhibit any treatment effect on the pH and colour of ground chicken (P > 0.05). In conclusion, although LAE possesses strong inhibitory (P < 0.05) effect against Salmonella in suspension in 0.1% peptone water, no inhibitory (P > 0.05) effect on growth of Salmonella was observed in ground chicken at the currently approved levels of 200 ppm of LAE.  相似文献

Pervasive systems are large-scale systems consisting of many sensors capturing numerous types of information. As this data is highly voluminous and dimensional, data analysis tasks can be extremely cumbersome and time-consuming. Enabling computers to recognise real-world situations is an even more difficult problem, involving not only data analysis, but also consistency checking. Here we present Situvis, an interactive visualisation tool for representing sensor data and creating higher-level abstractions from the data. This paper builds on previous work, Clear et al. (2009) [8] through evolved tool functionality and an evaluation of Situvis. A user-trial consisting of 10 participants shows that Situvis can be used to complete the key tasks in the development process of situation specifications in over 50% less time than an improvised alternative toolset.  相似文献

There is much concern regarding the genesis of acidic leachate by mine tailings and its potential impact on local water systems. Genesis of the leachate and its subsequent escape into the surrounding watershed is controlled by the primary distribution of facies within the tailings pond. Leachate generation and percolation is enhanced in high-sulphide coarse-grained sands, while percolation is restricted in fine-grained clays formed from bentonitic slimes. The Kidd Copper deposit, located on the South Range of the Sudbury Basin, was a typical offset dike nickel deposit, where mining took place between 1970 and 1990. Using a sequence of temporally separate aerial photographs dating from 1945 to 2002, it is possible to document the initial development of the mine, its closure and the subsequent degradation of the mine tailings waste that was produced during mining activity. Since the mine's closure, the resulting tailings deposit has progressively oxidized, generating acid-rich leachate. Leachate can escape from the tailings via surface run-off and subsurface flow. The spatial distribution of possible flow pathways was mapped using a combination of sub-centimetre-resolution real-time kinematic (RTK) GPS and individual, high-resolution, oriented photographs of subsurface pits. Lithologic mapping information of the Kidd Copper tailings deposit can provide an insight into the distribution of local aquifers and aquitards. Subsurface lithologic mapping was achieved using a combination of sub-centimetre-resolution RTK GPS and individual, high-resolution, oriented photographs of subsurface pits. The photograph of each pit provides lithologic information of a specific point in the tailings deposit, while the high-resolution GPS locates the individual photographs in three-dimensional (3D) geographic space. Combining these data allows us to identify continuous lithologic surfaces between pits, leading to the construction of a 3D model of the deposition of the tailings pond. Grain size and textural details extracted from the images of each lithology permit discrimination between aquifers and aquitards. The final geometric model could be used as input for estimating the hydrologic and chemical evolution of the tailings.  相似文献

Radon-222 is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is responsible for approximately half of the human annual background radiation exposure globally. Chronic exposure to radon and its decay products is estimated to be the second leading cause of lung cancer behind smoking, and links to other forms of neoplasms have been postulated. Ionizing radiation emitted during the radioactive decay of radon and its progeny can induce a variety of cytogenetic effects that can be biologically damaging and result in an increased risk of carcinogenesis. Suggested effects produced as a result of alpha particle exposure from radon include mutations, chromosome aberrations, generation of reactive oxygen species, modification of the cell cycle, up or down regulation of cytokines and the increased production of proteins associated with cell-cycle regulation and carcinogenesis. A number of potential biomarkers of exposure, including translocations at codon 249 of TP53 in addition to HPRT mutations, have been suggested although, in conclusion, the evidence for such hotspots is insufficient. There is also substantial evidence of bystander effects, which may provide complications when calculating risk estimates as a result of exposure, particularly at low doses where cellular responses often appear to deviate from the linear, no-threshold hypothesis. At low doses, effects may also be dependent on cellular conditions as opposed to dose. The cellular and molecular carcinogenic effects of radon exposure have been observed to be both numerous and complex and the elevated chronic exposure of man may therefore pose a significant public health risk that may extend beyond the association with lung carcinogenesis.  相似文献

This study tested whether coordinated care management (CCM), a continuity of care intervention for substance use disorders (SUD), improved rates of abstinence when compared with usual welfare management for substance-using single adults and adults with dependent children applying for public assistance. The study was designed as a practical clinical trial and was implemented in partnership with a large city welfare agency. Participants were 421 welfare applicants identified via SUD screening and assigned via an unbiased computerized allocation program to a site that provided either CCM (n = 232) or usual care (UC; n = 189). Outcomes were assessed for 1 year postbaseline with self-reports and biological measures of substance use. As hypothesized, for participants not enrolled in methadone maintenance programs (n = 313), CCM clients received significantly more services than did UC clients. Nonmethadone CCM also showed significantly higher abstinence rates (odds ratio = 1.75; 95% confidence interval = 1.12, 2.76; d = 0.31) that emerged early in treatment and were sustained throughout follow-up. In contrast, no treatment services or outcome effects were found for methadone maintenance clients (n = 108). Painting over joints and the narrow gaps around fasteners is extremely common. When the joint or gap is stressed, the gap opens and the coating over it is subject to very large strains that may immediately or eventually cause it to fail and thus permit corrosion, etc. Improving the design or selection of coatings to overcome this problem requires quantification of the imposed elongation of the coating. A simple coated butt joint geometry, in tension and in bending, is modeled by finite-element analysis to examine how coatings of different modulus respond to the opening of a joint, particularly showing regions where strain distributions may provoke failure. More loci of possible initial failure occur when the gap is filled by a material that is different from the coating over the gap because there is an added interface.  相似文献

Arsenic mobility in natural environments is controlled primarily by sorption onto metal oxide surfaces, and the extent of this sorption may be influenced strongly by the presence of other dissolved substances that interact with surfaces or with arsenic itself. Natural organic matter (NOM), a prevalent constituent of natural waters, is highly reactive toward both metals and surfaces and is thus a clear candidate to influence arsenic mobility. The objectives of this study were therefore to reveal the influences of diverse NOM samples on the sorption of arsenic onto hematite, a model metal oxide, as well as to reveal influences of arsenic on the sorption of NOM, using conditions and concentrations relevant to natural freshwater environments. Of the six NOM samples tested, four formed aqueous complexes with arsenate and arsenite. The extent of complexation varied with the NOM origin and, in particular, increased with the cationic metal (primarily Fe) content of the NOM sample. In addition, every NOM sample showed active redox behavior toward arsenic species, indicating that NOM may greatly influence redox as well as complexation speciation of arsenic in freshwater environments. When NOM and As were incubated together with hematite, NOM dramatically delayed the attainment of sorption equilibrium and diminished the extent of sorption of both arsenate and arsenite. Consistent with this result, when NOM and As were introduced sequentially, all NOM samples displaced sorbed arsenate and arsenite from hematite surfaces, and arsenic species similarly displaced sorbed NOM from hematite in significant quantities. Competition between NOM and As for sorption thus appears to be a potentially important process in natural waters, suggesting that NOM may play a greater role in arsenic mobility than previously recognized. In addition, in all sorption experiments, arsenite was consistently desorbed or prevented from sorbing to a greater extent than arsenate, indicating that interactions with NOM may also partially explain the generally greater mobility of arsenite in natural environments.  相似文献
