Ultrashort echo time (UTE) imaging is a technique that can visualize tissues with sub-millisecond T(2) values that have little or no signal in conventional MRI techniques. The short-T(2) tissues, which include tendons, menisci, calcifications, and cortical bone, are often obscured by long-T(2) tissues. This paper introduces a new method of long-T(2) component suppression based on adiabatic inversion pulses that significantly improves the contrast of short-T(2) tissues. Narrow bandwidth inversion pulses are used to selectively invert only long-T(2) components. These components are then suppressed by combining images prepared with and without inversion pulses. Fat suppression can be incorporated by combining images with the pulses applied on the fat and water resonances. Scaling factors must be used in the combination to compensate for relaxation during the preparation pulses. The suppression is insensitive to RF inhomogeneities because it uses adiabatic inversion pulses. Simulations and phantom experiments demonstrate the adiabatic pulse contrast and how the scaling factors are chosen. In vivo 2D UTE images in the ankle and lower leg show excellent, robust long-T(2) suppression for visualization of cortical bone and tendons. 相似文献

We observed that pretreatment of male F344 rats with benzyl selenocyanate,
a versatile organoselenium chemopreventive agent in several animal model
systems, decreases the levels of DNA and RNA modifications produced in the
liver by the hepatocarcinogen 2- nitropropane. To clarify the mechanisms
involved, we pretreated male F344 rats with either benzyl selenocyanate,
its sulfur analog benzyl thiocyanate, phenobarbital or cobalt
protoporphyrin IX; the latter is a depletor of P450. We then determined (1)
the ability of liver microsomes to denitrify 2-nitropropane, (2) effects on
2-nitropropane- induced liver DNA and RNA modifications and (3) amount of
nitrate excreted in rat urine following administration of the carcinogen.
Pretreatment with benzyl selenocyanate or phenobarbital increased the
denitrification activity of liver microsomes by 217 and 765%, respectively,
increased liver P4502B1 by 31- and 435-fold, respectively, decreased the
levels of 2-nitropropane-induced modifications in liver DNA (29-70% and
17-30%, respectively) and RNA (67-85% and 30-50%, respectively), and
increased the 24-h urinary excretion of nitrate by 157 and 209%,
respectively. Pretreatment with benzyl thiocyanate had no significant
effect on any of these parameters. Pretreatment with cobalt protoporphyrin
IX decreased liver P4502B 1 by 87%, decreased the denitrification activity
of liver microsomes by 76%, decreased the 24 h urinary excretion of nitrate
by 88.5%, but increased the extent of 2-nitropropane-induced liver nucleic
acid modifications by 17-67%. These results indicate that the metabolic
sequence from 2-nitropropane to the reactive species causing DNA and RNA
modifications does not involve the removal of the nitro group. Moreover,
they suggest that benzyl selenocyanate inhibits 2-NP-induced liver nucleic
acid modifications in part by increasing its detoxication through induction
of denitrification, although it is evident that other mechanisms must also
be involved.

Although survival of older burn victims has improved significantly in recent years, controversy remains over the care that should be given to this group and the functional recovery of survivors. To assess the impact of burn injury on lifestyle in the elderly, we conducted a mail-in survey among surviving patients ages 45 years or older who were treated in our burn center from 1978 to the middle of 1987. The survey asked questions about living arrangements, personal care, family relations, social life, work status, and outlook on the future. Of 168 surveys mailed, 109 were completed and returned (64.9%). Responders consisted of 82 men and 27 women with a mean age of 57.8 years (range, 45 to 92 years). Ninety-seven percent of patients were able to return home after discharge, but 27% of the oldest patients (ages greater than 75 years) required permanent placement in extended care facilities. With increased age there was an increased tendency toward dependence and the need for assistance in daily living; half of the oldest patients required assistance in daily living. Even so, most of the patients in this survey remained independent and maintained a positive outlook on the future.
