Little leaguer's shoulder is a syndrome involving the proximal humeral epiphyseal plate and has been reported in adolescent athletes between 13-16 years of age. We present an adolescent case with radiological findings of little leaguer's shoulder syndrome in a non-athletic patient. The patient had applied significant rotational stress to the proximal humeral physis as a result of overuse due to physiotherapy, but the left asymptomatic side appeared more affected radiologically, which led to the idea that this may be a physiological change that occurs in adolescents. We thus evaluated the anteroposterior radiography of 10 healthy male adolescents of the same age with no skeletal or muscular complaints. We demonstrated a minimal widening of the lateral part of the proximal humeral epiphysis in two of these 10 patients. We believe little leaguer's shoulder should also be considered in adolescents with proximal humeral pain and a history of overuse. A larger study must be conducted to investigate whether these finding may be a variation of physiological development.  相似文献

Abnormalities in the metabolism of essential fatty acids and the results of increased oxidative stress have been implicated in cardiovascular disorders observed in diabetes mellitus. This study, therefore, aimed to investigate the effects of cod liver oil (CLO, Lysi Ltd, Iceland), which comprises mainly an antioxidant vitamin A, n:3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n:3 PUFAs), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), on cardiovascular abnormalities in streptozotocin (STZ)-diabetic rats. Two days after single STZ (55 mg kg(-1), i.p.) or vehicle injection, diabetes was verified by increased blood glucose, and non-diabetic and diabetic rats were left untreated or treated with CLO (0.5 mL kg(-1) daily, by intragastric probing) for 12 weeks. Plasma glucose, triacylglycerol and cholesterol concentrations were significantly elevated in 12-week untreated-diabetic rats; CLO provided better weight gain, entirely prevented the plasma lipid abnormalities, but partially controlled the glycaemia in diabetic rats. In isolated aorta rings, diabetes resulted in increased phenylephrine-induced vasoconstriction and isoprenaline-induced vasorelaxation, impaired endothelium-dependent vasodilatation and unchanged responsiveness to sodium nitroprusside. CLO treatment completely prevented endothelial deficiency, partly corrected the phenylephrine-induced vasoconstriction and did not affect the responses to isoprenaline and sodium nitroprusside in diabetic aorta. Diabetes also produced a marked decrease in the rate of spontaneously beating right atria and a significant increase in basal contractile force of left ventricular papillary muscle. The responsiveness of right atria to the positive chronotropic effect of isoprenaline was significantly decreased in diabetic rats, and was increased in CLO-treated diabetic rats. The positive chronotropic effect of noradrenaline was markedly increased in diabetic atria, but prevented by CLO treatment. Diabetes also resulted in an increased positive inotropic response of papillary muscle to both noradrenaline and isoprenaline, which were prevented by CLO treatment. CLO treatment also resulted in lower tissue sensitivity (pD(2)) to these agonists in diabetic papillary muscle. Ventricular hydroxyproline content was found to be unchanged among the experimental groups. The ultrastructure of diabetic myocardium displayed various degenerations (i.e. intracellular oedema, myofibrillar fragmentation, condensed pleomorphic mitochondria, thick capillary irregular basement membrane, swollen endothelial cells), which were partially prevented by CLO treatment. We conclude that the supplementation with CLO is effective in preventing cardiovascular disorders observed in experimental diabetes.  相似文献

Most patients show improvement in the weeks or months after a stroke. Recovery is incomplete, however, leaving most with significant impairment and disability. Because the brain does not grow back to an appreciable extent, this recovery occurs on the basis of change in function of surviving tissues. Brain mapping studies have characterized a number of processes and principles relevant to recovery from stroke in humans. The findings have potential application to improving therapeutics that aim to restore function after stroke.  相似文献

It is well-known that flavonoids including rutin exert a wide range of pharmacological effects. This study was carried out for further characterization of the pharmacological effect of rutin. A significant rise in the serum 5-HT levels was found 2 h after the administration of rutin (25 mg kg?1 i.p.). The same dose of rutin caused no significant change in the serum 5-hydroxytryptomine levels after 8 and 72 h when compared to controls. In the in vivo experiments, rutin (25 mg kg?1 i.p.) was ineffective on the blood pressure and respiratory tract of the guinea-pigs in spite of its smooth muscle relaxant effects in the in vitro preparations. These findings strongly suggest a physiological antagonism in the effects of rutin in intact animals.  相似文献

Hypertension is an important health problem that is manifested by systemic arterial blood pressure being permanently elevated and leading to serious complications. Hypertension is the basis for coronary heart diseases, heart failure, kidney damage, cerebrovascular diseases. Due to ethical concerns, there is no detailed study of the mechanism, side effects and treatment of hypertension in humans. For this reason, specific studies related to the organ of hypertension are performed in experimental animals. The heart and kidney tissue, which are the most important organs that hypertension has damaged, have formed specific organs of our work.In our experimental study, a total of 35 (hypertensive group: 20, control group: 15) Rattus Norvegicus Wistar albino rats were used. In order to obtain our hypertension model, our experimental animals were given L-NAME together with drinking water for six weeks. After six weeks, the experimental procedures were terminated. Heart and kidney tissues of the hypertensive and control group were obtained. Expression of apelin and apelin receptor (APJ) was demonstrated by immunohistochemical and Western Blot protocols.Hypertrophic cardiac atrium of the hearts of the large cavities, interventricular septum and myocardium to the disintegration, as well as an increase in the diameter of the coronary artery has been observed. In general, kidney tissues of the hypertensive group showed narrowing in cortical renal structures and enlargement in structures in the renal medulla.As a result, in hypertensive cases, there was an increase in expression of Apelin and APJ receptor in heart tissue, and a decrease in expression of Apelin and APJ receptor in kidney tissue. We think that our findings may contribute to experimental or clinical studies related to hypertension and apelin.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Strong hepatitis C virus (HCV)-specific T-cell responses are associated with spontaneous clearance of acute hepatitis C. However, recent studies described a decline in HCV-specific CD8+ T-cells during interferon treatment, suggesting that the success of acute HCV therapy might be independent of adaptive immunity. METHODS: T-cell responses of eight human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-A2-positive, acutely infected patients treated with peginterferon-alpha2b were studied by ELISPOT and proliferation assays and flow cytometry analysis using HCV-specific tetramers. RESULTS: HCV-specific T-cells predominately declined during therapy. However, diverse patterns of CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell kinetics were observed. In patients with sustained virological response chemokine receptor 3 (CXCR-3) expression of HCV-specific CD8+ T-cells was upregulated, indicating homing to the liver. Low levels of T-cells remained detectable throughout treatment and follow up. In contrast, T-cells of a relapse patient did not upregulate CXCR-3 but displayed a higher staining for annexin-V, followed by a complete loss of peripheral virus-specific CD8+ T-cells by week 12. CONCLUSIONS: Kinetics of HCV-specific T-cell responses are heterogeneous in interferon-treated patients with acute hepatitis C. The decline of T-cells might be a consequence of both apoptosis and homing. The balance between cell death and regulation of chemokine receptors might lead to different long-term outcomes.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Medication overuse headache (MOH) mostly evolves from migraine and episodic tension-type headache (ETTH). Chronic tension-type headache (CTTH) is another headache type that evolves over time from ETTH. It is well known that psychiatric comorbidity is high in MOH patients. AIM: To investigate the frequency of psychiatric comorbidity, and the intensity of depression and anxiety in MOH patients evolving from ETTH and to compare results with CTTH patients and MOH patients evolving from migraine. METHODS: Twenty-eight CTTH (Group C) and 89 MOH patients were included into the study. MOH patients were divided into two groups according to their pre-existing headache types: MOH patients with pre-existing ETTH (Group E, n = 31), and with pre-existing migraine (Group M, n = 58). All patients were interviewed with a psychiatrist and SCID-CV and SCID-II were applied. Beck Anxiety Inventory and Beck Depression Inventory scales were also performed. RESULTS: Eleven patients (39.3%) in Group C, 21 patients (67.7%) in Group E, and 31 patients (53.7%) in Group M were diagnosed to have comorbid psychiatric disorders. The psychiatric comorbidity was found significantly higher in Group E than Group C. In Group E, mood disorders were found significantly higher, but the difference between the two groups with regard to anxiety disorders was insignificant. Mean depression scores were significantly higher in Group E than Group C. The mostly diagnosed type was obsessive-compulsive personality disorder in all the three groups, and was statistically significant in Group M than Group C. CONCLUSION: Psychiatric comorbidity in MOH patients with pre-existing ETTH is common as in those with pre-existing migraine headache and MOH with regard to developing psychiatric disorders should be interpreted as a risk factor in chronic daily headache patients.  相似文献
