Summary Astroviruses, 28 nm-diameter, RNA-containing viruses which have been implicated in gastroenteritis can be cultivated in cell cultures containing trypsin, but do not show distinguishable cytopathic effects. However, with the 5 known astrovirus serotypes which we have been able to cultivate, 3 (types 1, 2, and 5) formed well-defined plaques in LLCMK2 cell cultures under an agar overlay containing trypsin. A virus neutralization assay based on plaque reduction was applied to these 3 serotypes. It was found that rabbit antisera prepared against individual serotypes neutralized virus type-specifically, and no cross-neutralization titers were obtained with any of the antisera to the 5 astrovirus serotypes. The type-specific neutralization observed agreed with the specificities seen by immunofluorescence (IF), whereas ELISA tests with the same antisera show cross-reactivity among all 5 serotypes. There was no virus neutralization detected with astrovirus monoclonal antibodies which were reactive with 5 serotypes by ELISA and IF. The results we have obtained permit quantitative techniques to be applied to epidemiological and biological studies of the human astroviruses.  相似文献

The rare case of a patient with SIADH following pituitary adenoma apoplexy is reported. Since apoplexy did not exert any mass effect on surrounding structures, the patient was treated conservatively and the anterior pituitary gland insufficiency has been substituted adequately. Seven days after the apoplexy the patient again showed low serum–Na+ levels despite cortisol substitution. Diagnosis of SIADH was made. It is essential to be aware of this rare syndrome in patients with pituitary adenoma apoplexy.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: In order to determine the risk factors for rectal colonization with vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) at the Shiraz Namazi Hospital, we performed a nested case-control study. METHODS: From December 2003 to July 2004 rectal swabs were taken from 700 randomly selected hospitalized patients every 5 days. RESULTS: A total of 99 of the 700 patients (14%) were colonized with VRE (cases) and 59 patients were colonized with vancomycin-sensitive strains (VSE), serving as controls. In the univariate analysis, history of antibiotic use (p=0.04), underlying disease (p=0.013), hemodialysis (p=0.03), use of third generation cephalosporins (p=0.04), use of vancomycin (p=0.04), and duration of vancomycin therapy longer than 7 days (p=0.02) were significantly associated with VRE colonization. In a multivariate analysis, underlying disease and the duration of vancomycin use longer than 7 days were independently associated with VRE colonization. CONCLUSION: Our study, the first on VRE carriage in Iran, demonstrates that VRE prevalence is high in Shiraz and confirms earlier observations in other countries. The identified risk factor 'use of vancomycin longer than 7 days' may be avoidable, indicating a feasible intervention strategy in the control of VRE.  相似文献

Conductive implants are in most cases a strict contraindication for MRI examinations, as RF pulses applied during the MRI measurement can lead to severe heating of the surrounding tissue. Understanding and mapping of these heating effects is therefore crucial for determining the circumstances under which patient examinations are safe. The use of fluoroptic probes is the standard procedure for monitoring these heating effects. However, the observed temperature increase is highly dependent on the positioning of such a probe, as it can only determine the temperature locally. Temperature mapping with MRI after RF heating can be used, but cooling effects during imaging lead to a significant underestimation of the heating effect. In this work, an MRI thermometry method was combined with an MRI heating sequence, allowing for temperature mapping during RF heating. Concerning surgical management experience with locking plates for proximal humeral fractures has been described with promising results. Though, distinct hardware related complaints after fracture union are reported. Information concerning the outcome after removal of hardware from the proximal humerus is lacking and most studies on hardware removal are focused on the lower extremity. The expression of alpha(v)beta(3) and glucose metabolism are upregulated in many malignant lesions, and both are known to correlate with an aggressive phenotype. We evaluated whether assessment of alpha(v)beta(3) expression and of glucose metabolism with PET using (18)F-galacto-RGD and (18)F-FDG provides complementary information in cancer patients. METHODS: Eighteen patients with primary or metastatic cancer (non-small cell lung cancer [NSCLC], n = 10; renal cell carcinoma, n = 2; rectal cancer, n = 2; others, n = 4) were examined with PET using (18)F-galacto-RGD and (18)F-FDG. Standardized uptake values (SUVs) were derived by volume-of-interest analysis. (18)F-Galacto-RGD and (18)F-FDG PET results were compared using linear regression analysis for all lesions (n = 59; NSCLC, n = 39) and for primaries (n = 14) and metastases to bone (n = 11), liver (n = 10), and other organs (n = 24) separately. RESULTS: The sensitivity of (18)F-galacto-RGD PET compared with clinical staging was 76%. SUVs for (18)F-FDG ranged from 1.3 to 23.2 (mean +/- SD, 7.6 +/- 4.9) and were significantly higher than SUVs for (18)F-galacto-RGD (range, 0.3-6.8; mean +/- SD, 2.7 +/- 1.5; P < 0.001). There was no significant correlation between the SUVs for (18)F-FDG and (18)F-galacto-RGD for all lesions (r = 0.157; P = 0.235) or for primaries, osseous or soft-tissue metastases separately (P > 0.05). For the subgroup of lesions in NSCLC, there was a weak correlation between (18)F-FDG and (18)F-galacto-RGD uptake (r = 0.353; P = 0.028). CONCLUSION: Tracer uptake of (18)F-galacto-RGD and (18)F-FDG does not correlate closely in malignant lesions. Whereas (18)F-FDG PET is more sensitive for tumor staging, (18)F-galacto-RGD PET warrants further evaluation for planning and response evaluation of targeted molecular therapies with antiangiogenic or alpha(v)beta(3)-targeted drugs.  相似文献
