An optimization analysis is presented for axisymmetric plug nozzles with varible inlet geometry. The analysis is based on the governing gas dynamic relations for a rotational flow of a frozen or equilibrium gas mixture. The problem is formulated to maximize the axial thrust produced by the plug nozzle for a general isoperimetric constraint, such as constant nozzle length or constant nozzle surface area. The effects of base pressure and ambient pressure are included in the thrust expression to be maximized. The governing gas dynamic equations and the differential and integral constraints that the solution must satisfy are incorporated into the formulation by means of Lagrange multiples. The formalism of the calculus of variations is applied to the resulting functional to be maximized. The results of the optimization analysis are a set of partial differential equations for determining the Lagrange multipliers in the region of interest and a set of equations for determining the necessary boundary conditions for the solution. The complete set of equations for the gas dynamic properties and the Lagrange multipliers are system of first order, quasi-linear, non-homogeneous partial differential equations of the hyperbolic type, which can be treated by the method of charac- teristics. The characteristic and compatibility equations for the system are presented. A numerical solution procedure is presented to determine wether or not a given plug nozzle geometry is an optimal solution. An iteration technique is developed which systematically adjusts the plug nozzle geometry until the optimal solution is obtained. Selected parametric studies are presented. These studies illustrate the effect of the specific heat ratio, the design pressure ratio and the base pressure model on the thrust peformance and nozzle geometry of optimal, fixed length, plug nozzles.  相似文献

This work describes a system for precise re-location of cells within a monolayer after atomic force imaging. As we know little about probe interaction with soft biological surfaces any corroborative evidence is of great importance. For example, it is of paramount importance in living cell force microscopy that interrogated cells can be re-located and imaged by other corroborative technologies. Methodologies expressed here have shown that non-invasive force parameters can be established for specific cell types. Additionally, we show that the same sample can be transferred reliably to an SEM. Results here indicate that further work with live cells should initially establish appropriate prevailing force parameters and that cell damage should be checked for before and after an imaging experiment.  相似文献

Results from various refining operations on a number of oils have been presented. Economies from reduction of capital expenditures and operating costs are expected to accrue to the user. Inactivation profiles of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in inoculated bovine manure-based compost ingredients were determined by composting these ingredients in a bioreactor under controlled conditions. A 15-liter bioreactor was constructed to determine the fate of E. coli O157:H7 and changes in pH, moisture content, temperature, and aerobic mesophilic and thermophilic bacterial counts during composting. Fresh cow manure, wheat straw, cottonseed meal, and ammonium sulfate were combined to obtain a moisture content of ca. 60% and a carbon/nitrogen ratio of 29:1. The compost ingredients were held in the bioreactor at a constant external temperature of 21 or 50 degrees C. Self-heating of the ingredients due to microbial activity occurred during composting, with stratified temperatures occurring within the bioreactor. At an external temperature of 21 degrees C, self-heating occurred for 0 to 3 days, depending on the location within the bioreactor. E. coli O157:H7 populations increased by 1 to 2 log10 CFU/g during the initial 24 h of composting and decreased by ca. 3.5 log10 CFU/g near the bottom of the bioreactor and by ca. 2 log10 CFU/g near the middle and at the top during 36 days of composting. At an external temperature of 50 degrees C. E. coli O157:H7 was inactivated rapidly (by ca. 4.9 log10 CFU/g at the top of the bioreactor, by 4.0 log10 CFU/g near the middle, and by 5.9 log10 CFU/g near the bottom) within 24 h of composting. When inoculated at an initial level of ca. 10(7) CFU/g. E. coli O157:H7 survived for 7 days but not for 14 days at all three sampling locations, as indicated by either direct plating or enrichment culture. At the top of the bioreactor a relatively constant moisture content of 60% was maintained, whereas the moisture content near the bottom decreased steadily to 37 to 45% over 14 days of composting. The pH of the composting mixture decreased to ca. 6 within 1 to 3 days and subsequently increased to 8 to 9. Results obtained in this study indicate that large populations (10(4) to 10(7) CFU/g) of E coli O157:H7 survived for 36 days during composting in a bioreactor at an external temperature of 21 degrees C but were inactivated to undetectable levels after 7 to 14 days when the external temperature of the bioreactor was 50 degrees C. Hence, manure contaminated with large populations (e.g., 10(7) CFU/g) of E. coli O157:H7 should be composted for more than 1 week, and preferably for 2 weeks, when held at a minimum temperature of 50 degrees C.  相似文献

Despite an increasing emphasis on the role of senior managementcognition in shaping organizational action, there have beenfew attempts to link top management mental models to strategicchoice in the face of discontinuous innovation. This paper uses23 years of data covering 15 major pharmaceutical firms to explorethe degree to which each firm's response to the revolution inbiotechnology was shaped by the senior team's recognition ofbiotechnology's importance. Controlling for a number of importantalternative explanations, we show that recognition may be animportant predictor of action, suggesting that cognition atthe most senior level can play a critical role in shaping establishedfirms' response to discontinuities.  相似文献

A distributed model predictive control (DMPC) framework is proposed. The physical plant structure and the plant mathematical model are used to partition the system into self-sufficient estimation and control nodes. Local measurements at the nodes are used to estimate the relevant plant states. This information is then used in the model predictive control calculations. Communication among relevant nodes during estimation and control calculations provides improvement over the performance of completely decentralized controllers. The DMPC framework is demonstrated for the level control of an experimental four-tank system. The performance of the DMPC system for disturbance rejection is compared with other control configurations. The results indicate that the proposed framework provides significant improvement over completely decentralized MPC controllers, and approaches the performance of a fully centralized design.  相似文献

The specific applications discussed include: control of insulin administration for treating diabetes mellitus, dynamic modeling for anti-cancer chemotherapy regimen design, modeling and control of drug infusion in critical care, structured treatment interruptions: a control mathematical approach to AIDS protocol design, and dynamic modeling and control of the anticoagulant drug heparin. The objective of the tutorial is to illustrate the rich and important set of problems within the biomedical area that process control engineers can contribute to solving. The utility of Al, Cu and In filters and collimators of different diameters in the X-ray fluorescence measurement of lead in the bone was investigated. The changes in Compton scattering and Pb K-series peaks were analyzed with different filters and collimators. Compton scattering and fractional dead time were significantly reduced with the use of filters. The FWHM values of Pb Kα1, Kβ1,3 peaks decrease in a nearly linear relation with the ratio of length of collimator to the diameter as the small diameter collimator with long length reduces divergence of spectra, thus improves resolution. The measurement precisions of Kα1 and Kβ1,3 peaks were improved by applying an indium filter. The ratio of signal-to-noise slightly increases when an indium filter was used.  相似文献

Increased student enrollment and the current poor state of the educational infrastructure require the construction of more school buildings and the renovation of many of the existing ones. The large number and magnitude of change orders in these projects constitute an impediment to the rapid and economic delivery of these projects. A total of 6,585 change orders filed in a school district’s projects in the 5 1/2 year period from 1999 to 2004 were analyzed in five categories including owner-directed changes, code compliance issues, errors/omissions in contract documents, discovered or changed conditions, and others. The results of the study indicate that the dollar value of change orders relative to the original contract can be reduced if preventive measures are taken. These measures include choosing the right construction management firm, emphasizing the definition of project scope early in the project, and effectively managing the precontract activities by conducting value engineering and constructability reviews. The results indicate that school projects can be completed with change orders not exceeding 5% of the contract value if these measures are taken. This study is of relevance to practitioners involved in school design and construction projects.  相似文献

Shape recognition can be achieved through vision or touch, raising the issue of how this information is shared across modalities. Here we provide a short review of previous findings on cross-modal object recognition and we provide new empirical data on multisensory recognition of actively explored objects. It was previously shown that, similar to vision, haptic recognition of objects fixed in space is orientation specific and that cross-modal object recognition performance was relatively efficient when these views of the objects were matched across the sensory modalities (Newell, Ernst, Tjan, & Bülthoff, 2001). For actively explored (i.e., spatially unconstrained) objects, we now found a cost in cross-modal relative to within-modal recognition performance. At first, this may seem to be in contrast to findings by Newell et al. (2001). However, a detailed video analysis of the visual and haptic exploration behaviour during learning and recognition revealed that one view of the objects was predominantly explored relative to all others. Thus, active visual and haptic exploration is not balanced across object views. The cost in recognition performance across modalities for actively explored objects could be attributed to the fact that the predominantly learned object view was not appropriately matched between learning and recognition test in the cross-modal conditions. Thus, it seems that participants naturally adopt an exploration strategy during visual and haptic object learning that involves constraining the orientation of the objects. Although this strategy ensures good within-modal performance, it is not optimal for achieving the best recognition performance across modalities.
