Influence of poly(acrylic acid) molar mass on the fracture properties of glass polyalkenoate cements
The failure behaviour of glass polyalkenoate cements was investigated using a linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) approach. Cements were based on four model glasses with varying reactivity and four poly(acrylic acid)s (PAA)s with number average molar masses (Mn) ranging from 3.25 × 104 to 1.08 × 105. Cement properties were studied at time intervals of one, seven and twenty eight days. Compressive strengths (c) of the cements increased with increasing fluorine content of the glass, with increased molar mass of the PAA and with ageing time. The Young's moduli increased with time, but were lower for cements based on the fluorine free glass. Moduli values were independant of PAA molar mass. The un-notched fracture strength (f) of the cement increased with the molar mass of the PAA and with ageing time. Glass composition did not appreciably influence the un-notched fracture strength. The fracture toughness (KIC) increased with the molar mass of the PAA and with ageing time, but reduced with increasing fluorine content of the glass. The toughness (GIC) was dependant on molar mass. The influence of molar mass was not as great as predicted by the reptation chain pull-out model for fracture. The molar mass dependence of toughness was greatest with the lower fluorine content glasses. The plastic zone size at the crack tip increased with the molar mass of the PAA. However the plastic zone size decreased with ageing time for all the cements studied and was smaller for the more reactive higher fluorine content glasses. 相似文献

In this paper we estimate the amount by which firms' labor costs are increased by compliance with affirmative action regulations imposed on federal contractors for 160 SMSAs in 1980. The paper focuses on determining the cause(s) for variation in these compliance costs across SMSAs and in identifying areas of high and low compliance cost. We find that compliance costs are lower in larger SMSAs, more rapidly growing SMSAs, and SMSAs that have relatively large proportions of minorities and females in the labor market.The authors would like to thank Fred Wildes and Long Gen Ying, both of San Diego State University, for their assistance on this project. Doped germanium photoconductors are the most sensitive detectors for astronomy in the wavelength range 40-240 μm. Under the extremely low background conditions encountered in cooled satellite instruments, these devices exhibit a number of transient effects, such as slow relaxation after a step change in illumination or bias, and spontaneous spiking at high signal levels. Such behavior can degrade the excellent instantaneous sensitivity of these detectors and create calibration uncertainties. These effects have been observed in the Ge:Be photoconductors and the stressed and unstressed Ge:Ga photoconductors in the Long Wavelength Spectrometer, one of the instruments on the Infrared Space Observatory. A systematic investigation of the transient response of the Long Wavelength Spectrometer detectors to a step change in illumination as a function of operating temperature, bias electric field, and illumination step size has been carried out to determine operating conditions that minimize the effects of this behavior. The transient effects appear to be due primarily to carrier sweep out, but they are not fully explained by existing models for transient response. 相似文献

Polarized light imaging (PLI) is a method to image fiber orientation in gross histological brain sections based on the birefringent properties of the myelin sheaths. The method uses the transmission of polarized light to quantitatively estimate the fiber orientation and inclination angles at every point of the imaged section. Multiple sections can be assembled into a 3D volume, from which the 3D extent of fiber tracts can be extracted. This article describes the physical principles of PLI and describes two major applications of the method: the imaging of white matter orientation of the rat brain and the generation of fiber orientation maps of the human brain in white and gray matter. Characterization of second order local image structure by a 6D vector (or jet) of Gaussian derivative measurements is considered. We consider the affect on jets of a group of transformations-affine intensity-scaling, image rotation and reflection, and their compositions-that preserve intrinsic image structure. We show how this group stratifies the jet space into a system of orbits. Considering individual orbits as points, a 3D orbifold is defined. We propose a norm on jet space which we use to induce a metric on the orbifold. The metric tensor shows that the orbifold is intrinsically curved. To allow visualization of the orbifold and numerical computation with it, we present a mildly-distorting but volume-preserving embedding of it into euclidean 3-space. We call the resulting shape, which is like a flattened lemon, the second order local-image-structure solid. As an example use of the solid, we compute the distribution of local structures in noise and natural images. For noise images, analytical results are possible and they agree with the empirical results. For natural images, an excess of locally 1D structure is found. 相似文献

In the free-running circadian rhythms of 14 human subjects (4 females, 10 males) who lived singly in an isolation unit without temporal clues, locomotor activity was recorded by means of contact plates installed below the carpet in the main room. During sleep, movements in bed were picked up by spring contacts attached to the mattress. In all subjects, the hourly means of locomotion during wakefulness (alpha) were negatively correlated with the duration of alpha to such an extent that the total amount of locomotion per cycle remained constant when alpha varied from 14 to 23 hr. The hourly values of movements in bed were independent of the duration of sleep (rho), so that the total number of movements was almost proportional to rho. The "homeostatic control" of locomotion during wake time is considered as a means to conserve energy when the duration of wakefulness increases. 相似文献

We have investigated the in vivo administration of nonmitogenic anti-CD3F(ab')2 fragments for the prevention of lethal graft-vs-host disease (GVHD) in irradiated recipients of fully allogeneic bone marrow cells plus splenocyte (BMS) inocula. Recipients of anti-CD3F(ab')2 fragments administered for 1 mo post-bone marrow transplantation (BMT) had 100% survival without clinical or histopathological evidence of GVHD. Controls given saline injections succumbed by 39 days post-BMT. Similar results were obtained in groups of recipient mice given BMS in which T cells were depleted by in vitro anti-Thy-1.2 plus C' treatment. Further studies were undertaken to define mechanistic differences in the two approaches. Using Ly-5 congenic sources of donor bone marrow and spleen, we determined that anti-CD3F(ab')2 fragments induced TCR modulation and T cell depletion. Mature splenic-derived CD4+ cells were depleted to a greater extent than CD8+ cells. Early post-BMT, recipients receiving injections with control saline had the highest number of CD4+ and CD8+ cells (which may cause GVHD) followed by recipients of anti-CD3F(ab')2 fragments, with the fewest CD8+ cells observed in the anti-Thy-1.2 + C' treated group. CD3+CD4-CD8- cells (which may suppress GVHD generation) were present in higher numbers early post-BMT in recipients given anti-CD3F(ab')2 fragments as compared to recipients given anti-Thy-1.2 + C'-treated BMS. In long term survivors, a mononuclear T cell containing infiltrate without evidence of destruction was observed in sites of GVHD (lung and liver), consistent with a "Quilty" effect, which was not observed in either of the other two groups. Although survivors were tolerant of donor skin grafts and rejected third party grafts, recipients given anti-CD3F(ab')2 fragments but not anti-Thy-1.2 + C'-treated BMS had vigorous anti-host proliferative responses. These results demonstrate that although in vitro anti-Thy-1.2 + C' treatment of BMS (which is highly depletionary) and in vivo administration of anti-CD3F(ab')2 fragments (which is modulatory and less depletionary) are both effective strategies for GVHD, the cellular events involved in achieving GVHD prevention are indeed different. 相似文献

The active participation of all stakeholders in environmental assessments, health and safety audits, and restructuring of schools is an essential part of the school reform movement.
