The role of perspective in the accessibility of goals during reading.

An implicit assumption of several causal reasoning models is that readers adopt the goals of a narrative's protagonist during text comprehension. In apparent violation of this assumption, readers participating in Experiment 1 of the present study drew inferences relevant to a protagonist's goal even when that goal was already satisfied from the perspective of the protagonist. In Experiments 2 and 3, participants were explicitly asked to view the text situation from the point of view of the protagonist. In this case, the goals of the reader and the protagonist should be the same. In these experiments, participants focused on the goals of the protagonist only when those goals had not been satisfied from the perspective of the protagonist. These results are discussed in terms of reader- and character-based perspectives and in terms of text characteristics that cue perspective taking. The evaluation criteria in this article can help the IS executive determine the outsourcing options for software operations.     

The rationale for cementless total hip replacement

Current cementing techniques of distal plugging, pulsatile water cleaning of the canal, and retrograde filling with PMMA in a low-viscous state prepared using porosity reduction techniques and then pressurized have been shown to give excellent results at 10 or more years after operation. However, physical and aging characteristics of PMMA do not guarantee that those results will hold up in the 20- to 30-year time frame. Fifteen-year experience with bony ingrowth systems indicate the development of a durable interface without PMMA, although the interface does appear more vulnerable to attack by the biologic reaction to HMWPE debris. Bone remodeling appears more favorable around proximally fixed bone ingrowth prostheses than around distally fixed prostheses. Softening of the physical characteristics of the stem tip may reduce the incidence of thigh pain. Patients with high activity potential and a life expectancy of greater than 25 years should be strongly considered for a proximally fixed bone ingrowth or ongrowth prosthesis.     

Efficient computation of time-varying and adaptive filters

Two techniques for efficient computation of filters that support time-varying coefficients are developed. These methods are forms of distributed arithmetic that encode the data, rather than the filter coefficients. The first approach efficiently computes scalar-vector products, with which a digital filter is easily implemented in a transpose-form structure. This method, based on digital coding, supports time-varying coefficients with no additional overhead. Alternatively, distributed-arithmetic schemes that encode the data stream in sliding blocks support efficient direct-form filter computation with time-varying coefficients. A combination of both of these techniques greatly reduces the computation required to implement LMS adaptive filters     

The low process yield of some PNP power transistors

A study is presented of the symptoms of the devices in a slice of PNP power transistors with a poor yield. The failure modes over the slice are analysed. In specific areas the electrical characteristics and optical appearance of the devices were studied and failure statistics are presented. The low yield is ascribed to cracks in the phosphosilicate glass used for the base diffusion. The effect of these cracks is just visible in the optical and scanning electron microscope.     

Thermomechanical behaviour of composites

This paper derives the governing equations for the thermomechanical behaviour of composites. When the basic equations for the thermoelastic behaviour of solids were first derived in the nineteenth century several approximations were made. The effect of these assumptions are discussed and illustrated by the results of a simple laboratory test. The implications of this work on the analysis of impact damaged laminates are then discussed.     

Perceived stress management skill mediates the relationship between optimism and positive mood following radical prostatectomy.

This study evaluated relations among optimism, perceived stress management skills (PSMS), and positive mood in 46 men who had surgical treatment for localized prostate cancer. The authors found that optimism, PSMS, and positive mood scores were positively correlated. Positive mood was unrelated to demographic and disease-related control variables. In a hierarchical regression model controlling for PSMS, the relationship between optimism and positive mood became nonsignificant, whereas PSMS remained a correlate of positive mood. Results suggest that the relationship between optimism and positive mood may be mediated by belief in being able to use stress management techniques effectively.
