Force plate studies of equine biomechanics

The force plate can measure a wide range of effects in the horse. The same instrument can record forces from more than a ton in the galloping animal to 25 g associated with the action of the heart. In all probability, the force plate will develop into a valuable clinical instrument.     

Aides' involvement in decision-making and the quality of care in institutional settings

Using two measures of the quality of care in institutional settings, we found much variance in the care provided within three institutional settings. Factors that might account for this variance were examined. Aides' perception of their involvement in certain areas of decision-making was shown to be of major importance in accounting for the variance in quality of care.     

Crystallization of grain boundary phases in hot-pressed silicon nitride materials

Multicomponent oxide additions were used to replace magnesia as the densification aid for hot-pressing silicon nitride and silicon nitride-alumina materials. Crystallization of the silicate glass phases present after hot-pressing was encouraged by the use of an in situ heat treatment process. The phase constitutions of the materials produced by this method were determined using X-ray powder analysis. The kinetics of the densification of the silicon nitride materials were investigated, and these materials were examined using an X-ray diffractometer to study the textures produced by hot-pressing.     

A dilution refrigerator combining low base temperature,high cooling power and low heat leak for use with nuclear cooling

We describe the design philosophy, design, construction and performance of a dilution refrigerator specifically intended for nuclear cooling experiments in the submillikelvin regime. Attention has been paid from the outset to minimizing sources of heat leaks, and to achieving a low base temperature and relatively high cooling power below 10 mK. The refrigerator uses sintered silver heat exchangers similar to those developed at Grenoble. The machine has a base temperature of 3 mK or lower and can precool a copper nuclear specimen in 6.8 T to 8 mK in 70 h. The heat leak to the innermost nuclear stage is < 30 pW after only a few days' running.     

Analysis of Coherent Multistate Systems

The structure and reliability of homogeneous s-coherent multistate systems is studied. Homogeneous systems have two properties: 1) their components can be rearranged internally in any arbitrary way without affecting the mapping of the component states onto the system state; 2) all components, all subsystems composed of them, and the system have the same set of states. Because of the s-coherence and homogeneity properties, mapping of the component states onto the system state, as well as calculating probabilities of system states from those of the component states, become very simple. In homogeneous systems, states can be ranked according to their relative dominance, and the state ranking completely determines the structure of such a system. Any homogeneous s-coherent system belongs to one of four categories which differ in whether the identity property is satisfied or not, or on details of the state ranking. As an application, the high pressure injection system of a pressurized water reactor is modeled as a multistate system composed of homogeneous s-coherent multistate subsystems.     

After Legislation--Comments and Rejoinders.

Karl C. Pratt comments that the issues so cogently stated by C. Deutsch ("After Legislation--What Price Psychology?"; American Psychologist, 1958, 13, 645-652) are fundamental and deserve consideration by our profession.
