Design and fabrication of a 1 m model of the 70 mm bore twinaperture superconducting quadrupole for the LHC insertions

For reasons of geometrical acceptance, 70 mm bore twin aperture quadrupoles are required in the LHC insertions. For an operating gradient of 160 T/m at 4.5 K, a design based on a four layer coil wound from two graded 8.2 mm NbTi conductors has been developed. Three 1 m single aperture quadrupoles of this design have been built and successfully tested. Thereafter, the magnets have been disassembled and the coils re-collared using self-supporting collars. In this paper, we describe the design features of the twin aperture quadrupole, and report on the initial collaring tests and procedures for collaring and final assembly of the 1 m magnet     

Thinking about Antarctic Heritage: kaleidoscopes and filters

The preliminary results of a project that is currently investigating the nature and range of meanings of Antarctic heritage are explored. The project involves two visits to Scott Base, and the subjects of the qualitative research are the members of the New Zealand Antarctic community. Work so far suggests that different meanings do exist, and a four-fold typology of meanings is suggested which needs to be considered in decisions affecting the future of Antarctica.     

Physical discipline among African American and European American mothers: Links to children's externalizing behaviors.

The aim of this study was to test whether the relation between physical discipline and child aggression was moderated by ethnic-group status. A sample of 466 European American and 100 African American children from a broad range of socioeconomic levels were followed from kindergarten through 3rd grade. Mothers reported their use of physical discipline in interviews and questionnaires, and mothers, teachers, and peers rated children's externalizing problems annually. The interaction between ethnic status and discipline was significant for teacher- and peer-rated externalizing scores; physical discipline was associated with higher externalizing scores, but only among European American children. These findings provide evidence that the link between physical punishment and child aggression may be culturally specific. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)     

The Core method for real-time requirements

The member companies of the Software Productivity Consortium develop large, mission-critical, real-time applications. For these companies, requirements are the top-priority problem in systems and software development. These requirements have driven the development of the Consortium Requirements Engineering (Core) method and its prototype CASE tools. Core is a single, coherent method for specifying real-time requirements that integrates object-oriented and forward models, integrates graphical and formal specifications, permits nonalgorithmic specifications, and provides a machine-like model. The Core requirements, component technologies, and conceptual model are discussed. Some important Core features are illustrated with an example of safety-shutdown software for a shipboard fuel-control system     

Anxiolytic activity of NPY receptor agonists in the conflict test

Selenium is an important trace element that was considered toxic for humans and animals for a long time. The best known biochemical role of selenium is, as a selenocysteine residue, to be a part of the active site of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px). The highest values of selenium have been found in protein foods (meat and fish); although selenium from vegetables sources are more available than from the other foods. Nowadays are not known exactly the recommended dietary allowances for humans, mainly for children. The selenium intake in Spain is 221 micrograms/person/day and the plasmatic values of Spanish people (87 +/- 14 micrograms/L) are within the European average (85 micrograms/L).     

Analogs of thyrotropin-releasing hormone using an aminoglycine-based template

Novel thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH, pGlu-His-Pro-NH2) analogs, made by solid phase, were derived from the general scaffold pGlu-(D/L)Agl(X)-Pro-NH2 where Agl = aminoglycine. Analogs ranged from X being a proton to an acylating agent derived from substituted (aromatic heterocyclic rings) formic or acetic acids or an aminotriazolyl moiety (3'-amino-1H-1',2',4'-triazolyl) built on N(alpha) of aminoglycine or Nbeta of alpha,beta-diaminoproprionic acid (Dpr). X was expected to mimic the electronic and structural characteristics of the imidazole ring of histidine. Analogs were purified by HPLC, characterized by mass spectrometry and isolated as either diastereoisomeric mixtures or pure isomers. Analogs, tested for their binding affinity to mouse pituitary TRH receptors, have apparent equilibrium inhibitory constants > 1 microM.
