Cognitive processes and the decisions of some parents to forego pertussis vaccination for their children

Public health analyses suggest that, in spite of the possibility that pertussis vaccine may cause rare cases of neurological injury, catastrophic risks to individual children are lower if they are vaccinated. A number of parents, however, choose not to vaccinate their children. The purpose of this study was to investigate the decision processes of some parents who choose to vaccinate and some parents who choose not to do so. Surveys were mailed to 500 randomly selected subscribers of Mothering magazine. Two hundred and ninety-four completed questionnaires were returned (59%). In addition to well-recognized factors in vaccination decisions, perceived dangers of the vaccine, and of the disease and susceptibility to the disease, several cognitive processes not previously considered in vaccination decision studies were found to be important predictors in this population of parents: perceived ability to control children's susceptibility to the disease and the outcome of the disease; ambiguity or doubts about the reliability of vaccine information; a preference for errors of omission over errors of commission; and recognition that if many other children are vaccinated, the risk to unvaccinated children may be lowered. Although perhaps most cases of undervaccination for pertussis reflect more general problems of health care access, some parents choose to forego vaccination for their children for other reasons. Traditional risk-benefit arguments alone will be unlikely to persuade these parents to reassess their decisions. Efforts to increase childhood vaccination must incorporate an understanding of the cognitive processes that help drive these decisions.     

Frequency-hopped spread spectrum in the presence of a followerpartial-band jammer

A countermeasure to a partial-band follower jammer is proposed for frequency-hopped spread-spectrum communications. This technique randomizes the transmission technique used by the transmitter (and receiver). Either the information is carried by M tones which are transmitted in a frequency slot, or by M frequency slots which contain signal energy. As a counter-countermeasures, the jammer randomizes between jamming the same frequency slot being used by the communicator, or jamming a subset of the slots not being used by the communicator. The performance for randomized strategies for the communicator and jammer is investigated. It is shown that the proposed technique enhances the system's performance     

Expression of a phosphorylation-resistant eukaryotic initiation factor 2 alpha-subunit mitigates heat shock inhibition of protein synthesis

Protein synthesis is dramatically reduced upon exposure of cells to elevated temperature. Concordant with this inhibition, multiple phosphorylation and dephosphorylation reactions occur on specific eukaryotic initiation factors that are required for protein synthesis. Most notably, phosphorylation of the alpha-subunit of eukaryotic initiation factor-2 (eIF-2 alpha) on serine residue 51 occurs. To identify the importance of phosphorylation in control of protein synthesis, we have evaluated the effects of expression of a mutant eIF-2 alpha which is resistant to phosphorylation. Expression of a serine to alanine mutant at residue 51 of eIF-2 alpha partially protected cells from the inhibition of protein synthesis in response to heat treatment. The overexpressed serine to alanine 51 mutant subunit was incorporated into the eIF-2 heterotrimer and was resistant to phosphorylation. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that heat shock inhibition of translation is mediated in part through phosphorylation of eIF-2 alpha. Expression of the wild type or mutant eIF-2 alpha did not affect cell survival or induction of hsp70 mRNA upon heat shock, indicating that although eIF-2 alpha is a heat shock-induced protein, its increased synthesis during heat shock does not alter the heat-shock response.

Understanding cassava varietal preferences through pairwise ranking of gari-eba and fufu prepared by local farmer–processors

Within communities in Osun and Imo States of Nigeria, farmer–processors grew and processed a diverse set of improved and landrace cassava varieties into the locally popular foods, gari, eba and fufu. Local and 15 main varieties were grown in a ‘mother and baby trials’ design in each state. Mother trials with three replications were processed by farmer–processors renown in their community for their processing skills. Baby trials were managed and processed by other farmer–processors. The objective was to identify food quality criteria to inform demand-led breeding to benefit users, especially women, given their key roles in processing. Farmer–processors evaluated the overall quality of fresh roots and derived food products through pairwise comparisons. Improved varieties had higher fresh and dry root yield. Overall, landraces ranked first for quality of gari and eba, but several improved varieties were also appreciated for good quality. Landraces in Osun had higher gari yield and a higher swelling power compared to improved varieties. Colour (browning), bulk density, swelling power, solubility and water absorption capacity were the criteria most related to food product ranking by farmer–processors. Evaluation of varieties under farmer–processors’ conditions is crucial for providing guidance to breeders on critical selection criteria.
