Norovirus-associated foodborne outbreaks have become a major public health concern all over the world. Food service establishments are always looking for disinfectants and sanitizers that are effective against various microbes but are non-corrosive and non-toxic to food and food contact surfaces. The efficacy of sodium bicarbonate against certain bacteria and fungi has been documented but its role as a disinfectant against viruses is not known. In this study, anti-calicivirus efficacy of sodium bicarbonate alone and in combination with aldehydes or hydrogen peroxide was evaluated using feline calicivirus (FCV) as a surrogate for norovirus (NoV). Sodium bicarbonate at concentrations of 5% and above was found to be the most effective with 4 log(10) (99.99%) reduction in FCV titers on food contact surfaces within a contact time of 1 min. The virucidal efficacy of sodium bicarbonate was enhanced when it was used in combination with aldehydes or hydrogen peroxide. An advantage of sodium bicarbonate over the available chemical disinfectants for food contact surfaces is its safety, ready availability and low cost. The use of sodium bicarbonate alone or in combination with aldehydes can be an effective and inexpensive method of disinfecting food contact surfaces.  相似文献

We discuss and implement a wavelet-modified maximum average correlation height (MACH) filter for 0 degrees -360 degrees in-plane rotations in a hybrid digital-optical correlator. Use of a wavelet transform improves the performance of the MACH filter by reducing the number of filters that are required to identify a target rotated at any angle between 0 degrees and 360 degrees in-plane rotations and enhances the autocorrelation peak intensity significantly. The output of a hybrid digital-optical correlator contains two autocorrelation peaks and a strong dc. Using a chirp function with the wavelet-modified MACH filter, the correlation signals are focused in three different planes. Thus placing a peak-capturing CCD camera at a particular plane, only one autocorrelation peak is recorded, discarding the strong dc and other autocorrelation peaks. A signal-to-noise ratio has been calculated as a metric of goodness of the proposed wavelet-modified MACH filter.  相似文献

In this study, Cr2O3 coatings were deposited on CF8M and CA6NM turbine steels by high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF)-spray process and analyzed with regard to their performance under slurry erosion conditions. High Speed Erosion Test Rig was used for slurry erosion tests, and the effects of three parameters, namely, average particle size, speed (rpm), and slurry concentration on slurry erosion of these materials were investigated. SEM micrographs on the surface of samples, before and after slurry erosion tests, were taken to study the erosion mechanism. For the uncoated steels, CA6NM steel showed better erosion resistance in comparison with CF8M steel. The HVOF-sprayed Cr2O3-coated CF8M and CA6NM steels showed better slurry erosion resistance in comparison with their uncoated counterparts. It may be due to the higher hardness as a result of HVOF-sprayed Cr2O3 coating in comparison with the uncoated CF8M and CA6NM steels.  相似文献

It has been observed that, compared to bulk form, the nanocrystalline α-Fe2O3 is finding application in various areas. Magnetic properties of α-Fe2O3 are found to be influenced by the size of particles and are also sensitive to synthesis method employed for sample preparation. In the present work we have prepared a series of Nd doped α-Fe2−xO3 samples (x = 0.0–0.5) by combustion method, without using any fuel. The analysis of room temperature neutron diffraction patterns shows that all the compounds of the series form in the hematite (α-Fe2O3) structure, space group R−3c. Magnetization measurements show that there is a broad distribution of particle size in the samples. We find that the increase in the Nd content results in the dilution of magnetism of α-Fe2O3. From results we believe that inclusion of Nd in α-Fe2O3 drastically modifies the magnetic properties.  相似文献

Complete liquification time (CLT) test (min:s) exploits the physical property of milk fat as the time required by solid fat to melt completely at a defined temperature. It has been used to detect adulteration of groundnut oil and goat body fat when added singly and in combination with ghee. The Complete liquification time test for samples containing a combination of adulterants was carried out before and after solvent fractionation. The results revealed that adulterants added individually could be detected at higher levels (15%, w/w, groundnut oil in cow ghee; and 10%, w/w, goat body fat in buffalo ghee), while fractionation reduced the detection limit to lowest level (10%, w/w) used in this study.  相似文献

The wear and friction properties of poly (ether‐ether‐ketone) (PEEK) reinforced with 0–33 vol % (60 wt %) micron size Al2O3 composites were evaluated at a sliding speed of 1.0 m/s and nominal pressure from 0.5 to 1.25 MPa under dry sliding conditions using a pin‐on‐disk wear tester. The wear resistance of the pure PEEK is 10‐fold higher than that of mild steel under the similar test condition. It is improved to 18‐fold as compared with mild steel at 3.5 vol % Al2O3 content. The improvement in wear properties may be attributed to the thin, tenacious, and coherent transfer film formed between the steel countersurface and composite pin. However, the wear resistance of PEEK containing above 3.5 vol % Al2O3 was deteriorated, despite their higher hardness and stiffness as compared with that of composites containing lower Al2O3 content. This is attributed to the formation of thick and noncoherent transfer film, which does not prevent the wear of the composites from hard asperities of countersurface. Moreover, hard Al2O3 particles present in transfer film act as third body wear mechanism. The coefficient of friction of the composites is higher than that of pure PEEK. SEM and optical microscopy have shown that wear of pure PEEK occurs by the mechanism of adhesion mainly whereas of PEEK composites by microploughing and abrasion. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Electrochemical and peroxidase-catalyzed oxidation of epinephrine (EPI) has been studied. In the electrochemical studies a single well-defined, 4e, 4H+, pH-dependent oxidation peak was observed in square wave and cyclic sweep voltammetry at edge plane pyrolytic graphite electrode. In the reverse sweep a redox couple was observed. The decay of the UV-absorbing intermediate generated and the first-order rate constants were calculated at different pH and were found to be ~6.3 × 10?3 s?1. The detection limit and sensitivity are found to be 17 × 10?8 M and 2.325 μA μM?1 respectively. At pH 7.2, the electro-oxidation product was characterized using NMR and DEPT studies as leucoadrenochrome. The peroxidase-catalyzed oxidation was carried out using horseradish peroxidase and initiated by adding H2O2. The identical spectral changes, rate constants and product formed during electrochemical and enzymatic oxidation suggest that the same intermediate species is generated during both the oxidations. A tentative pathway for the oxidation of EPI has been suggested. It is concluded that the electrochemical and peroxidase-catalyzed oxidation of EPI proceed by an identical pathway.  相似文献

The tribological properties of poly(ether–ether–ketone) (PEEK)/aluminum nitride (AlN) composites reinforced with micro‐ and nano‐AlN particles were evaluated under dry sliding conditions. The wear resistance of pure PEEK is 10‐fold higher than mild steel. It was further improved by 2‐fold at 20 wt % micro‐AlN and by more than 4‐fold at 30 wt % nano‐AlN composite compared with pure PEEK. The improvement in wear resistance was attributed to a thin and coherent transfer film. However, it was deteriorated on further increasing micro‐AlN. The coefficient of friction of the composites was increased. This article describes a glove box adaptation of an atomic absorption spectrometer with a graphite furnace as the atomization source. Unlike flame atomic absorption, in which the ground state atoms quickly diffuse out of the atom cell, graphite furnace atomic absorption, being a total consumption technique, offers the ability to de-solvate and atomize the entire sample solution in a more controlled environment. This significantly improves the sensitivity and provides superior detection limits with microliter sample volumes. An atomic absorption instrument was converted into separate modular units consisting of the source, atomizer, and detection system. In addition, these units were modified to enable their use in the glove box, allowing the analysis of nuclear samples. Proper optical alignment of the source, atomizer, and detector system was performed to allow the analysis of toxic samples.  相似文献

A systematic study was conducted using reversed‐phase thin‐layer chromatography wherein unsaponifiable matter of samples namely, pure cow and buffalo milk fats, vegetable oils (groundnut oil, soya bean oil and sunflower oil) and milk fats adulterated with vegetable oils (≥1%) were run along with the reference standards using two new solvent systems to detect adulteration in milk fat. The results of the study revealed that adulteration at even a 1% level could easily be detected using this rapid, reliable and reproducible method based on the presence of β‐sitosterol as a marker and some additional spots ascribable to their occurrence in vegetable oils only.  相似文献
