New developments in dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) imaging technology [fan beam and cone beam (CB)] result in higher exposure levels, shorter scan times, increased patient throughput and increased shielding requirements. This study presents the results of a European survey detailing the number and location of DEXA systems in SENTINEL partner states and the QA (quality assurance) currently performed by physicists and operators in these centres. The results of a DEXA equipment survey based on an in-house developed QA protocol are presented. Measurements show that the total effective dose to the patient from a spine and dual femur DEXA examination on the latest generation DEXA systems is comparable with a few muSv at most. Scatter measurements showed that the use of a mobile lead screen for staff protection was necessary for fan and CB systems. Scattered dose from newer generation systems may also exceed the exposure limits for the general public so structural shielding may also be required. Considerable variation in the magnitude and annual repeatability of half value layer was noted between different models of DEXA scanners. A comparative study of BMD (bone mineral density) accuracy using the European Spine Phantom highlighted a deviation of up to 7% in BMD values between scanners of different manufacturers. 相似文献

Since the emergence of high-throughput proteomic techniques and advances in clinical technologies, there has been a steady rise in the number of cancer-associated diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive biomarkers being identified and translated into clinical use. The characterisation of biofluids has become a core objective for many proteomic researchers in order to detect disease-associated protein biomarkers in a minimally invasive manner. The proteomes of biofluids, including serum, saliva, cerebrospinal fluid, and urine, are highly dynamic with protein abundance fluctuating depending on the physiological and/or pathophysiological context. Improvements in mass-spectrometric technologies have facilitated the in-depth characterisation of biofluid proteomes which are now considered hosts of a wide array of clinically relevant biomarkers. Promising efforts are being made in the field of biomarker diagnostics for haematologic malignancies. Several serum and urine-based biomarkers such as free light chains, β-microglobulin, and lactate dehydrogenase are quantified as part of the clinical assessment of haematological malignancies. However, novel, minimally invasive proteomic markers are required to aid diagnosis and prognosis and to monitor therapeutic response and minimal residual disease. Stimuli-responsive hydrogels have attracted much attention owing to the versatility of their programmed response in offering intelligent solutions for biomimicry applications, such as soft robotics, tissue engineering, and drug delivery. To achieve the complexity of biomimetic structures, two photon polymerization (2PP) has provided a means of fabricating intricate 3D structures from stimuli-responsive hydrogels. Rapid swelling hydrogel microstructures are advantageous for osmotically driven stimuli-response, where actuation speed, that is reliant on the diffusion of analytes or bioanalytes, can be optimized. Herein, the flexibility of 2PP is exploited to showcase a novel sugar-responsive, phenylboronic acid-based photoresist. This offers a remarkable solution for achieving fast response hydrogel systems that have been often hindered by the volume-dependent diffusion times of analytes to receptor sites. A phenylboronic acid-based photoresist compatible with 2PP is presented to fabricate stimuli-responsive microstructures with accelerated response times. Moreover, microstructures with programmable actuation (i.e., bending and opening) are fabricated using the same photoresist within a one-step fabrication process. By combining the flexibility of 2PP with an easily adaptable photoresist, an accessible fabrication method is showcased for sophisticated and chemo-responsive 3D hydrogel actuators. 相似文献
