Introduction

The aim of this study was to evaluate the rat alveolar bone response after the implantation of experimental light-cured mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) or Angelus MTA (Angelus, Londrina, Paraná, Brazil) by histological and fluorescence analysis.

Methods

Thirty Wistar Albino rats were divided into three groups. In the control group, empty polyethylene tubes were inserted into the rat alveolar sockets immediately after extraction. In the other groups, the tubes were filled with light-cured MTA or Angelus MTA. Five animals from each group were injected with calcein on day 7, alizarin on day 14, and oxytetracycline on day 21. On day 30, these animals were killed, and the right hemimaxillas were removed and histologically processed. Half of the maxillas were processed and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The remaining maxillas were processed for fluorescence analysis and stained with Stevenel blue and alizarin red. New bone was histomorphometrically evaluated using a Merz grid.

Results

The light-cured MTA presented a similar response when compared with Angelus MTA; it was characterized by a mild inflammatory response and complete bone healing. In the light-cured MTA group, the fluorescence areas were more evident at 21 days, showing an increase in bone formation. However, dystrophic mineralization was observed only with Angelus MTA.

Conclusions

It was concluded that both materials present a similar inflammatory response and bone healing, but dystrophic mineralization was observed only with Angelus MTA.  相似文献

It has become increasingly recognized that groups of microorganisms interact within the subgingival plaque of adult subjects with periodontitis. It is much less clear, however, whether the consortia of microorganisms associated with periodontitis are different in early and more advanced cases of periodontitis. To investigate this point further, subgingival plaque was collected from six sites in 87 adolescents with periodontitis and 73 controls and the samples were analyzed for the detection of 18 microbial species using the DNA-DNA hybridization technique. Actinomyces oris accounted for the highest proportion of the flora and was more predominant among controls. Prevotella nigrescens, Prevotella intermedia, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Tannerella forsythia were present at higher levels among the subjects with periodontitis. Factor analyses identified one factor characterized by highly positive loadings for T. forsythia, Campylobacter rectus, P. gingivalis, P. intermedia, P. nigrescens, Parvimonas micra, and Treponema denticola, and another factor characterized by highly positive loadings of A. oris, Capnocytophaga ochracea, Eikenella corrodens, Streptococcus intermedius, Selenomonas noxia, Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus sanguinis, and Veillonella parvula. Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Streptococcus mutans did not load on any of the two factors, while Fusobacterium nucleatum loaded on both. These findings confirm the occurrence of clustering of subgingival bacteria according to case status also among young individuals.  相似文献

International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry 2011; 21: 249–253 Background. Atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) has the advantages of reducing pain and fear and of being more cost‐effective than the traditional approach. Aim. The aim of this study was to investigate the survival of ART class I and II restorations in primary molars at 2 years. Design. The sample consisted of 190 restorations and placed in 155 children 6–7 years old of both genders. The treatment was performed by two final‐year dental students. All patients were treated in a completely supine position on tables available in the schools. The restorations were evaluated at 1, 12, and 24 months. Results. The best results were found for class I in each period of follow‐up. After 1 month, the success of class I restorations was 94.6% and class II restorations 70.1%. After 12 months, the success rate was 50.6% for class I and 15.2% for class II. The most frequent failure characteristics were totally or partially lost and gross marginal defect. Conclusions. The rate of success of restorations using the ART approach was significantly lower for class II.  相似文献

Diabetic neuropathies are a heterogeneous group of disorders that include a wide range of abnormalities. They can be focal or diffuse, proximal or distal, affecting both peripheral and autonomic nervous systems, causing morbidity with significant impact on the quality of life of the person with diabetes, and can result in early death. Distal symmetric polyneuropathy, the most common form of diabetic neuropathy, usually involves small and large nerve fibers. Small-nerve-fiber neuropathy often presents with pain but without objective signs or electrophysiologic evidence of nerve damage, and is recognized as a component of the impaired glucose tolerance and metabolic syndromes. The greatest risk resulting from small-fiber neuropathy is foot ulceration and subsequent gangrene and amputation. Large-nerve-fiber neuropathies produce numbness, ataxia and uncoordination, impairing activities of daily living and causing falls and fractures. A careful history and detailed physical examination are essential for the diagnosis. Symptomatic therapy has become available and newer and better treatment modalities, based on etiologic factors, are being explored with potential for significant impact on morbidity and mortality. Preventive strategies and patient education still remain key factors in reducing complication rates and mortality.  相似文献

Prenatal diagnosis of anorectal malformations currently occurs in 0–15.9% of screened cases. In cloacas, these numbers are unknown. We speculate that some images from prenatal ultrasound studies may suggest the diagnosis of cloaca, but are not recognized because of a lack of suspicion for this diagnosis.  相似文献

We investigated the association of sex and age with the occurrence of apolipoprotein E (apoE) and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) genotypes in healthy aging and longevity in 1344 healthy individuals and 64 centenarians. As compared to participants younger than 60 years, a significant higher frequency of the apoE/epsilon2 was observed in men aged 60-90 years (p <.001) and in centenarians (p <.001). Logistic regression analysis confirmed this outcome in both participants aged 60-90 years (odds ratio [OR] = 1.897; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.227-2.931) and centenarians (OR = 3.263; 95% CI, 1.860-5.722). A further significant association of ACE/D allele and age was observed in centenarians (OR = 2.135; 95% CI, 1.253-3.636). Heterosis was also observed at the ACE locus. No relationship between apoE and ACE polymorphism was found. These findings suggest a role of sex in the association of apoE and ACE gene polymorphisms with healthy aging and longevity.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) display endothelial dysfunction and are at a high risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD). Recent studies suggest that circulating detached endothelial cells (CECs) and stimulated endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) from the bone marrow may reflect endothelial damage. METHODS: We correlated the levels of CECs expressing the endothelial cell inflammation marker (MICA+ cells) and EPCs (Tie-2+ or VEGFR-2+ cells) in a population of 19 (55 +/- 3 years; 42% males) patients with advanced CKD (median glomerular filtration rate 8 ml/min). In addition, the levels of CD-31+ cells were investigated. Twenty healthy age- (49 +/- 2 years) and gender- (50% men) matched subjects served as controls. RESULTS: CECs expressing MICA were increased (7.6 +/- 2.7 vs. 1.6 +/- 0.3%; p < 0.05) in CKD patients, however EPCs expressing Tie-2 or VEGFR-2 were significantly decreased (0.16 +/- 0.07 vs. 0.53 +/- 0.15%; p < 0.05, and 0.42 +/- 0.10 vs. 2.80 +/- 0.72%; p < 0.01, respectively) as compared to controls. Furthermore, we also found that the levels of CD-31+ cells were significantly elevated (22.8 +/- 4.2 vs. 9.4 +/- 0.8%; p < 0.01) in CKD patients. Patients on angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors tended (p = 0.06) to have higher levels of VEGFR-2+ cells (0.57 +/- 0.14 vs. 0.16 +/- 0.11%). CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that there is a marked imbalance between the CEC and EPC numbers in patients with CKD. Further research is needed to evaluate the independent role of inflammatory endothelial markers as well as the effects of ACE inhibitors on mobilization of EPCs in patients with advanced CKD.  相似文献

The present paper concerns both the optimization of dexamethasone (DXM) entrapment and its release from biodegradable poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) nanoparticles prepared by the solvent evaporation process. Since the addition of DXM induced the formation of drug crystals beside the nanoparticle suspension, the influence of several parameters on DXM encapsulation was investigated such as the type of organic solvent and polymer, the DXM initial mass, the evaporation rate of the solvent, the continuous phase saturation and the incorporation of a lipid in the polymer. Nanoparticle size and zeta potential were not modified in the presence of DXM and were respectively around 230 nm and -4 mV. The highest drug loading was obtained using 100 mg PLGA 75:25 in a mixture of acetone-dichloromethane 1:1 (v:v) and 10 mg of DXM. The drug was completely released from this optimized formulation after 4 h of incubation at 37 degrees C. Neither the evaporation rate of the organic solvent, nor the aqueous phase saturation with salt or the incorporation of 1mg 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) within the nanoparticles modified the encapsulation efficiency. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) demonstrated that the drug was molecularly dispersed within the nanoparticles whereas the non-encapsulated DXM crystallized. These results demonstrate the feasibility of encapsulating dexamethasone and its subsequent delivery.  相似文献
