Susceptibility to sunburn, photoageing, and skin cancer is inversely related to an individual's ability to tan after sun exposure. We examined variants in the melanocortin-1-receptor (MC1R) gene in individuals from Ireland and the UK. We found evidence of an association between the degree of tanning after repeated sun exposure, and the number of variant alleles present. Heterozygotes were intermediate between wild-type individuals and those with two variant alleles. We suggest that MC1R gene status therefore determines sun sensitivity in people without red hair. 相似文献

Does Tongue Size Differ Between Patients With and Without Sleep‐Disordered Breathing? 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To determine whether there is a difference in the tongue size of patients with and without sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and to evaluate whether tongue volume correlates with body mass index (BMI), neck circumference, age, Epworth Sleepiness Scale score, or apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). STUDY DESIGN: Nineteen patients (9 with SDB; 10 without SDB) were enrolled in this prospective study. METHODS: All patients completed a sleep questionnaire including the Epworth Sleepiness Scale and underwent a physical examination, portable sleep study, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study. An examiner masked to the patients' disease status measured tongue volume from the MRI films. RESULTS: There was a trend for patients with SDB to have a larger tongue volume than patients without SDB (P = .065). Tongue volume only positively correlated with BMI (P = .005) and neck circumference (P = .013), but there was no correlation with age (P = .23) or AHI (P = .40). CONCLUSIONS: There is a statistical trend for patients with SDB to have larger tongue size compared with non-SDB patients, but tongue size is independent of AHI and correlates significantly with BMI and neck circumference. We interpret these findings to suggest that variations in tongue size alone cannot account for disease severity and may simply reflect the larger body habitus often seen in patients with SDB. 相似文献

Adenosine diphosphate (ADP) induced aggregation of rabbit platelets, without the release reaction, causes a significant decrease (7%) in the amount of phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2) at 10 sec and at 60 sec (11%). In platelets prelabeled with 32P-phosphate, this decrease in PIP2 is associated with a decrease in PIP2 radioactivity, which is significant at 50 sec. The decrease in PIP2 is sufficient to mobilize about 0.18 nmole Ca2+/10(9) platelets. In view of the key role played by Ca2+ in ADP-induced platelet shape change and aggregation, this evidence is compatible with the hypothesis that changes in PIP2 can be a source of calcium for cellular responses to agonists. 相似文献

Listeners with normal hearing (NH) and with sensorineural hearing impairment (HI) were tested on a speech-recognition task requiring across-frequency integration of temporal speech information. Listeners with NH correctly identified a majority of key words in everyday sentences when presented with a synchronous pair of speech-modulated tones at 750 and 3,000 Hz. They could tolerate small amounts (12.5 ms) of across-frequency asynchrony, but performance fell as the delay between bands was increased to 100 ms. Listeners with HI performed more poorly than those with NH when presented with synchronous across-frequency information. Further, performance of listeners with HI fell as a function of asynchrony more steeply than that of their NH counterparts. These results suggest that listeners with HI have particular difficulty comparing and effectively processing temporal speech information at different frequencies. The increased influence of asynchrony indicates that these listeners are especially hindered by slight disruptions in across-frequency information, which implies a less robust comparison mechanism. The results could not be attributed to differences in signal or sensation level, or in listener age, but instead appear to be related to the degree of hearing loss. This across-frequency deficit is unlikely to be attributed to known processing difficulties and may exist in addition to other known disruptions. 相似文献

We have studied the effects of medium conditioned by the human progranulocytic leukemia cell line, HL-60, on the subsequent growth of new inocula of HL-60 cells. When HL-60 cells were cultured at high cell density, optimal growth rate occurred in liquid suspension and confluent colony growth was observed in viscous medium without the addition of conditioned medium. However, when cells were cultured at lower cell density, growth rate was reduced and colony growth was nil unless conditioned medium from HL-60 culture was added. All HL-60 populations studied, including the earliest available passage, 9, both elaborated and responded to HL-60 CM. HL-60 CM did not stimulate normal human or mouse granulocyte-monocyte colony-forming cell (CFU-GM) growth. Conditioned media from other human cell lines varied in the ability to stimulate HL-60 cell and CFU-GM proliferation. Some, such as GCT CM, stimulated both HL-60 cells and normal CFU-GM, whereas others, like HL-60 CM, stimulated only HL-60 growth. The majority of cell line CMs tested did not stimulate either HL-60 or CFU-GM. Chromatography of HL-60 CM on Ultrogel AcA54 showed a single peak of HL-60 stimulating activity of apparent molecular weight 13,000. The ability of HL-60 cells to elaborate this activity provides a possible explanation for their proliferation at higher cell densities. Autostimulation may prove to be important in the high growth potential of other cell populations that undergo unrepressed proliferation. 相似文献

Studies were carried out to determine the effects of selective destruction of the catecholamine innervation of the intermediate portion of the nucleus tractus solitarius medialis (NTSm) on mean arterial pressure and heart rate in conscious rats. Following bilateral injections of 6-hydroxydopamine into the intermediate portion of NTSm, animals demonstrated a prolonged bradycardia, but no changes in mean arterial pressure or mean arterial pressure lability, when compared with controls. Results indicate that the baroreceptor reflex loop which mediates bradycardia is sensitive to impulses from catecholamine axons entering the intermediate NTSm. 相似文献
